Has anyone else here received a “crush” email from sendacrush.com? I received one with the subject line “Someone you know has a crush on you!” At first I assumed it was just the latest in spam subject line enticements but it was intriquing enough that I opened the email. Inside it said:
“Someone you know has anonymously sent you this email to let you know they have a crush on you.”
I thought, “Okay, this might be good!”
But then I read the next line:
“If you can guess their email, we’ll tell you if you’re right!”
What??? I followed the link and filled in the registration info (what the hell, they already had my email…) and sure enough the only way I can respond to the person is to guess their email. No hints, no lists of addresses to choose from, just a form with a blank field for entering the address of the person you think may have sent the “crush”.
I only have a handful of addresses that belong to non-family females. I entered all of those and they were all rejected. I even entered the addresses of a few guys who I thought might be playing a joke on me and those were also rejected. So now I’m left wondering if the person who sent it was serious and if she thinks that I have her email and is waiting for my response. I have one last thing to try; I could copy my company email list at work and try all of the women on there, but I don’t think any of them have the email address that it was sent to so it’s doubtful that I’ll have any success with that.
The whole thing almost seems designed to cause frustration! What’s the point? They should at least have a mechanism for forwarding replies so I could respond to whoever it is and let them know that I am possibly interested but clueless. Any suggestions?
Perhaps they are harvesting the email addresses you enter. Someone is only likely to enter valid emails with live potential costumers at the other end. By “rejecting” each one, they get you to keep entering more. Then, all those people you entered will receive the same spam, and all the harvested addresses well be sold to other spammers. That’s my theory.
That did cross my mind. I’ve looked at the site and it seems legit. It seems to me that there are much easier and much faster ways to harvest large numbers of emails. And I think I remember seeing a news piece about this service or something similar on someplace like CNN. Did anyone else see this?
I’m pretty sure that every email you enter will get an email saying that someone has a crush on them. Could be that you got it because someone guessed your name when they got one.
Well, I already entered several of my own alternate email addresses as guesses just to test that theory and none of them received anything. I then sent a “crush” from my main email to one of my alternates. That alternate (and none of the others) immediately received the same type of letter that I originally received. I then signed in as the alternate and guessed my main email. It told me that I had guessed correctly. Other guesses were rejected. I then received a confirmation email at my main address informing me that my “crush” had correctly guessed my identity. So it seems to be working as advertised. It sends what it’s supposed to send and it doesn’t send what it isn’t supposed to send. Geeze you people are paranoid.
By the way, when I made the correct “guess” it tried to entice me to use an online service to send flowers to my “crush”; this must be how they make their money.
Now that we know the dang thing is for real let’s get back to the original problem. How do I figure out who sent me the crush letter?
