Do you think adding this to a message sent from iphone is pretentious ?
That’s a preset signature line that people have to go in and take out. It’s not pretentious, it’s just lazy.
I don’t think it’s pretentious only because (AFAIK) the iPhone user isn’t adding it in, the iPhone does it automatically. I’d assume the person sending the message doesn’t even realize it’s there.
Slightly pretentious. It’s easy to take off, but a lot don’t. It can be taken as “bragging.”
I don’t know the purpose of this. I think it is pretentious, unless someone comes along and corrects me that it serves a purpose. And I don’t single out iPhones, I see Blackberry, mobile device, etc.
But why? Why should I give a shit what device you used.
Sent from my work computer.
ETA: So, it’s a default setting? I did not know that.
I think that goes back to old Blackberry signatures that were there so that the reader would be less judgmental about abbreviated words and odd spellings.
I don’t think it’s bragging since at this point, bragging about your internet capable phone is like bragging about your laptop. Enough people have them, that’s they’re not really a big deal anymore. I think it has more to do with advertising the specific brand of device that you’re using.
There is some point to it, I think it helps explain why I may have sent a very short or curt reply. “I’m typing with my thumbs, don’t expect a full discussion of the issues.”
PS: I don’t have an iPhone.
This is what I was going to say. I have an iPhone, I have what some would call a “twee” signature - (sent by iMel on her iPhone) but mostly that’s so people realize I am not at a computer.
When I’m on my phone, I don’t send long responses, can’t look at huge spreadsheets, and may or may not have looked at the various attachments my cohorts are likely to send. By keeping my iPhone sig - they understand that without me having to explain it every time.
No, it’s not pretentious. The company puts it there as free advertising for their product. I’d say it’s annoying.
I leave it so the reader knows that I am being brief because I’m typing on my phone, and also to point out to my boss that I’m replying to his email off the clock, in case he doesn’t read the time stamp.
I agree. It’s more like bragging I use “Apple.” Not bragging they have a internet-capable phone.
How is it pretentious or bragging if users don’t even know it’s there? I also think those who are aware of it simply cannot be bothered to find the setting to remove it. I recently removed it from my DroidX after receiving one too many jerkish comments from recipients, because, for some reason, seeing ‘Sent from my…’ appended to the end of an email message just ruins some people’s day. Idiots.
No, it’s not pretentious. It’s band-related adverting added as default by Apple. It takes most people a while to realise it’s even doing it, let alone work out how to remove it (it’s simple once you know how, though).
I would wager that most people would prefer it didn’t append that to their emails; and that any don’t notice it does.
I changed mine to “This message was sent from my phone” I do it so people know that I am not being brusque by replying with a one liner or that any typos or abbreviations are the result of tying the message on a small screen with my thumb.
I can’t see it as pretentious because everyone I know or deal with on a professional level either has an iPhone or some other smart phone that they can use.
It’s annoying (like all automated sigs that don’t include possibly needed contact info), can be seen as pretentious even if that was not the intent of either Apple or the user, and its use as a “forgive my shitty typing” signal is weak at best. It should be removed, IMHO.
“This message sent from my Blackberry” (don’t have an iPhone) is a lot more polite than “I’m not in the office. I’m on a job site doing real work. Leave me alone and I’ll respond more thoroughly tomorrow.”
I have an iPhone, and never even stopped to think that I could remove it. I just figured it was a way to let the recipient know that I’m being terse because I’m all thumbs. I’ve never even tried to change the signature.
Now, I’ve got to figure out how to change it so that no one thinks I’m bragging. You all really think that way? Sheesh.
I love the added line on my e-mails because if you don’t have a “Sent from my iPhone” signature, well, then you don’t have a “Sent from my iPhone” signature.
Lol! Very nice.
I’ll send an e-mail from my iPad, get a response while out driving, and then send a follow up e-mail which reads “sent from my blackberry.” THEN PC boy at his desk can get his hate on.
