Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

Finished The Serpent on Netflix about serial killer, thief, and fraudster Charles Sobhraj who preyed on young western tourists in Southeast Asia in the 1970s. Very suspenseful - lots of yelling at the TV…”Seriously, Nadine?” …”You should have let Paul shoot him!”. After the postscripts, check out his wiki page for recent developments in the last month.

Yellowstone also makes murder, mayhem and thuggery a seeming virtue. I guess there has to be something along those lines or else it would just be several seasons of watching cows and horses, and Beth terrorizing everyone.

The Watcher (Netflix, limited) - A couple who buy a beautiful large house in New England and they have to deal with strange neighbors and occurrences then someone begins sending threatening letters.

Meh. My wife and I were both disappointed in the ending, and at the time thought the whole show was a bust. On reflection a day later I wish there was more, maybe withdraw or maybe I just need anything to watch.

Yeah, it annoyed me as well.

We finished the firat season of Severance, and it was awesome. Highly recommended. Don’t let the slowness/confusion of the first episode or two put you off. It all begins to make sense as it goes along,

We started Slow Horses. So far after the first episode it’s just okay.

I finished the last of the twelve Season 1 episodes last night, really liked it although sometimes I missed the less exhausting moral oversimplification of the usual Star Wars universe.

I definitely see what all the fanfolk are so enthused about in terms of Andor’s quality, but there are still some things that I wonder if they’re holes in the show or it’s just me. For example, what was with Cassian, about a third of the way through the series, just apparently forgetting all about his quest to find his sister? After that you’d never know that this is a subject of any interest to him whatsoever, even during the brief post-heist period when he’s flush with cash and could go (nearly) anywhere he wants. Yes, there’s that one scene later on where his mother, in what turns out to be their last meeting, briefly tells him that looking for his sister is a hopeless endeavor and he should give it up, but where is there any indication that he hadn’t in fact given up on it already? “Sister? What sister?”

Two things about his sister:

  1. It served as a way to open the story, pushing Andor away from his home, reveal where he’s from, and spark off the whole pursuit
  2. There’s still a new season that may more directly address where she is

Dead Zone (2002) just came to my attention and I thought I’d give it a try as I didn’t watch it the first time around.

My wife and I have enjoyed the first two episodes. Hope it keeps up.

I’m currently re-watching the Netflix animated Carmen Sandiego series bc it’s so fun (but not childish) and the plot’s so catchy. Oh and you get to learn lots of world facts!

Kaleidoscope (Netflix) - I just couldn’t finish the first episode. I have no idea if the world needs another heist production full of, “You son of a bitch, I’m in!” tropes, but I do not. The gimmick? You can watch them in any order! Great, they’ve invented the sitcom.

We’ve watched three. Since supposedly the order in which they play is different for everyone, we may not have watched the same one you did. I think we saw Yellow, Green and Blue, in that order.

I love a good heist movie or series, and generally, those people taking part in the caper fill certain personality expectations: The Mastermind (whose ulterior motive is revenge, not money), the beautiful-but-feisty woman handling the logistics, the idiot savant with amazing computer skills, et cetera. In this series, though, they are sooooo stereotypical, right down to the sub-moronic (but brilliantly skilled) safecracker, who’s especially irritating. We may give it one more shot, but thus far we’ve found it underwhelming.

it’s formula, but we kept watching for what we considered a superb performance by Giancarlo Esposito.

The Madoff ‘series’ which just popped on Netflix was, imho, more of a four hour documentary chopped into four blocks.

FYI, the Detectorists Christmas special will be available on Acorn TV from tomorrow, January 9.

Yup, Yellow is what I attempted to watch also. No thanks.

See also: Army of Thieves (prequel to Army of the Dead). Although to be fair, the goofy German safecracker was still the most entertaining person in the film.

Forgot to mention that I’m watching Andor, otherwise known as “Everything in the Empire Is Depressing”. Having fun playing “Hey, I know that location!” but otherwise there aren’t a lot of laughs thus far.

My husband and I just started the newest season of The Sinner on Netflix. So far so good. We enjoyed the earlier seasons.

Now in season 4 of Yellowstone, a series which could be subtitled “Murdering Thugs of Montana”. And I gotta tell ya that I’m really tired of Costner’s tongue acrobatics, which is what passes for about 25% of acting with him. Also in this season we’re treated to the creepiness of Rip’s digging up his mother to get her engagement ring. WTF?
