n/m – wrong thread.
We watched the Madoff series on Netflix. I’m left with two questions. How did they get Lorne Michaels to play Bernie Madoff? And what was going on on the 18th floor?
Yep. And a snippet of one epi is going around FB and such, with the crazed daughter smashing some poor woman’s cellphone- assault and destruction of property- then threatening her. And people are cheering the daughter!
The scenes with Beth are almost always cringeworthy. While some are quite funny, a lot of them are intentionally way over the top. If she’s the model for a “strong woman”, I’ll pass.
The biggest problem with how Beth is portrayed, is, given her biggest conflict on the show, the hysterectomy given her by the sterilization clinic, the audience is left being glad she isn’t a mother, which makes one rather unsympathetic to the characters maternal pain.
True enough, but they didn’t make that clear until Season 3. Prior to that she just came across as psychotic.
Watching Deutschland '89, sequel to the Deutschland '83 and '86 series. Anybody else seen these? Martin, reluctant east german spy, infiltrates west german army and later run guns in africa, with lots of other characters and side-plots.
We’ve reached the fall of the Wall. Enjoying it, but the spy stuff is even more unbelievable than before. Two HVA (east german intelligence) heads dream up a plot to infiltrate west german banking world, and five minutes later Walter, Martins father, has been assigned to the mission and given a suitable cover identity, including a wife and a university position, in the west.
But the point is social commentary and black humor, and that works out. My favorite is Fritz, who after the wall falls heads straight to a west Berlin bank and black mail a clerk to give him a business loan.
Seen 3 episodes out of 8.
Same and same. Does anybody know when tf the most recent season is scheduled to be out on Netflix for realsies? I am rewatching earlier seasons in preparation, but getting very impatient!!!
Same for the ninth and final season of Endeavour on PBS, but that one I know will be a while in coming because they just wrapped filming last August.
And revisiting Chefguy’s posts on both those shows makes me think that if I want suggestions for a series I’ll like watching, I should just ask Chefguy what he hated.
Just saw first episode of season 7 of Once Upon a Time.
It was a bit confusing, but I am getting drawn in. It wasn’t my choice, but I am happy to see how it goes.
Different strokes and all that. I actually like Yellowstone, but it does strain one’s credulity.
I called Yellowstone the “slow boiling frog of preposterous” and I stand by that statement.
Les bon mots.
I just finished watching Anne With An E, a show I had intended to watch when it aired but never got around to it. It is, as most of you will know, a new adaptation of the Canadian story of Anne Of Green Gables and ran for three seasons a few years ago, starring Amybeth McNulty, who was incredibly well cast. Sometimes it’s easier to cast a child actor who is already so like the character, barely any acting is required (helping to paper some cracks if their ability isn’t up to scratch) and I am betting the same tactic was applied here.
I really enjoyed it. The issues were maybe a little too contemporarily approached, with her views remarkably progressive, but as the titles theme song said, she was ahead by a century.
It concluded with Anne leaving for College, and though it could have continued with more stories to tie up a couple of tiny loose ends, it felt like the right spot, and was very satisfying.
This was very much not the kind of show I would have watched when I was younger, not least for it being aimed at young girls, but these days as I age, I enjoy the sweet bucolic shows that lull me with their charms.
Also the music score was fantastic.
I really liked this series too. At first though, I did not like the actress playing Anne or maybe how she played Anne but she eventually grew on me.
After watching the Golden Globes I thought I’d check out Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
The first episode is one of those where you wish someone would switch on a goddam light. It is literally so dark that it’s unseeable. But after the lights go on, I figured … nah, I really don’t need this.
After finishing Slow Horses, which was okay, we are back watching season 3 of Barry. This is just about as black as comedy gets, but it’s a great show. Really as much a takedown of Hollywood as anything. Season 4 has wrapped, so there is at least another one coming.
We also, watched the first episode of Wednesday. It was very enjoyable, Thing turns out to be a hoot.
Despite its many GG nominations, I’m just not interested.
But I just wanted to point out that the actual title, read out loud in full every stinking time the nominees were read (and a couple times for the winners), is:
Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story
Clunkiest title ever!
Hadn’t even heard of this one. I am of course familiar with the 1980’s adaptation with Megan Fallows. Got curious at how they compare and found this.
I started to watch that, but it’s just too macabre. I know who he was and what he did, and I don’t need to be reminded.
I was half-expecting Megan Follows to cameo, or direct an episode, but she did not. However she did direct a movie and cast Amybeth in it.
