Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

The first season was well-paced. The second less so.

But Ciaran Hinds and James Purefoy were the best-realized Julius Caesar and Mark Antony in any medium and they made it all worthwhile. At least IMHO.

Kind of sad that your only exposure is a terrible movie. The first Christopher Reeve Superman movie isn’t perfect but it’s really quite good.

If it’s any consolation, I don’t remember it.

Beef is certainly both!

Watching The Newsroom for the first time and will say 2012-era Mr. Sorkin was pretty prescient about the direction American politics was going. Only on S1E3 right now, so if it goes off the rails, eh, I’ll find out. (And don’t worry about spoilers if you respond, to me it’s the journey, not the destination.)

If one were to watch only a single superhero movie, I think a very reasonable choice would be The Incredibles.

I’ve been a reasonably loyal watcher of The Rookie, but I think this will be the last season I’ll be watching. The writing is terrible, both stories and dialogue, and the characters are falling into a soapy bore. Oh well, it was fine while it lasted.

Much as I like Nathan Fillion onscreen, I agree. But it’s still head and shoulders above its spinoff series The Rookie:Feds. Such appalling writing.

A series I was watching and has recently come back: The Brokenwood Mysteries. Just a fun, reasonably light series set in a small new Zealand town. I thought they were done but new episodes recently popped up on Acorn.

Maybe the writer’s strike will help?

I’ve been making a bit of headway on my Netflix queue now that I’ve caught up on Hulu with Dirk Gently and Spy x Family. I started a show called Imperfects and gave up after 3 episodes and finished the first season of Uncle From Another World.

I’ve taken a pause on the popular Night Agent. I stopped on a scene were the title character has to steal a document from his boss’s office and is so clearly eyeing the document she’d have to be an idiot to not notice.

Which Dirk Gently - the one with Elijah Wood or the one with Stephen Mangan? I thought the Elijah Wood one was brilliant and was frustrated by the cancellation of the third series.

I didn’t even start on Imperfects - it just looked annoying from the trailer.

We’re finally in season four of Succession. It’s been a slog, as these are hands-down the most unlikeable characters in television history. Greedy, grasping, mean-spirited, crude, offensive, etc. But I guess it’s supposed to be satirically based on the Murdoch family, who are all of the above.

My recommendation for somebody looking for something a little different in the genre would be Mystery Men.

Miss Sam Breen a lot. The new guy just doesn’t work. I think the writers don’t know what to do with him. Really love the ME. She’s a gas. But too much Frodo. Whatever happened to Mike’s little vineyard?

Huzzah! I’ll have to check it out.

I loved the Elijah Wood version! It was so twisty and fun. I was severely po’d that the third season was cancelled. I wanted to see what was going to happen with Ken. Did he really turn bad??? Stupid STOOPID TV people.

Agree. The new guy is just a little too stiff. A bit boring. I’m fine with Frodo being in every other episode. I don’t like him always there, and the different siblings side story is getting (got?) old. I can’t even tell if Mike’s in the same house where the vineyard was.

Sims has gotten something changed. A new haircut or something, and it looks very nice. I wonder if they’re going to try and pair her up with the other detective. I kinda hope not.

Aw, I kinda liked her pony tail. I hope they don’t try to pair her off with him. I don’t see any chemistry, and I’ve really appreciated that they haven’t gone heavily into the relationship side of things. Mike’s many marriages is fine. Gina lusting after him is fine in small doses. And we never even saw Sam’s gf, did we?

I like the music in Brokenwood. And of course the M.E.

Just finished the first episode of Mrs. Davis, about a nun, an AI, and the Holy Grail. Not sure what to think of it yet. It is a dry comedy with a very weird tone. Weird things happening. People acting and talking not quite how people actually act and talk. It isn’t necessary close in tone to Los Espookys, but is the closest thing it reminds me of at the moment. Maybe a touch of The Truman Show, or something from Wes Anderson.

Started watching The Diplomat on Netflix, another rather engaging political thriller series. A skilled diplomat is appointed ambassador to Great Britain (usually a ceremonial post) during a fictional Gulf crisis involving the US, UK and Iran. Intrigue ensues.
