I watched a few of those. I wanted to like it. I tried to like it. I just couldn’t get there. When I saw the episode where they had the kids in the courtroom (I think they were called the Justice Buddies?), I was out. Every single element of that story was just too careless and slapdash. Sure, be cartoonish to some extent, but as a well-known movie character has been known to say, “There are rules.”
Watched the first ep of The Night Agent on NFLX. Pretty typical story line: low level agent has to protect an innocent young woman while trying to figure out who the bad guys are.
Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon. I still can’t believe this is a thing.
Staged - Man, Series 3 went full-on meta-meta-meta but still managed to land some brilliantly funny bits, particularly in the last episode. Not as good as the earlier episodes but the Tennant and Sheen double act remains strong.
If Adam Reed isn’t writing the episode the humor almost ends up like an Adam Reed Roast. They use his characters and style but there is no charm to the clever quips so the result is mean and vindictive and the soul of the show dries up. These characters WANT to be around each other even though they drive each other nuts, so it’s like a family. When others write it’s like listening to your divorcing parents fight and no one wants to listen to that.
The newest season of American Horror Story has started. I can’t tell for sure if it is going to be a good season or a bad season yet based one episode, but all signs so far are pointing to “terrible”.
Yeah this is pretty much what I was referring to. When the network spots you 2 extra non-strike seasons plus a reboot and you still can’t get your shit together (and you can’t even be bothered to save Peter’s girlfriend from the alternate universe they abandoned her in in season 2), it’s time to admit that season 1 was just lightning in a bottle and move on.
Its weird because they lampshade this in the new season. Seems like in the time it took to make a joke about it, they could’ve cut togeather a quick “previously on…” segment to stick in front of the new season.
Granted, its not really a plot driven show. But you’d think if they were going to bother with so many call backs to old characters and episodes, and the long gap between seasons, they’d slap together something to make it easier to recall who’s who.
A little late the game, but I almost totally caught up on The Rookie.
It is a guilty pleasure. Meaning that it objectively sucks, but I like it.
i am a fan of Nathan Fillion, but the show has not met a cliché it doesn’t love. The beautiful young professionals who ‘care so, so much’, the ‘brilliant’ serial killer, the super human drug dealer villain, the meet cute ‘we irritate each other so we are very attracted to each other’. And it has a ‘this time it’s personal’ every other episode.
Just finished the first (so far only) season of Captain Fall. My review is mixed.
The over-the-top outrageousness can be amusing but doesn’t always hit the mark.
I like the aspect of Liza slowly growing some sympathy for Jonathan and hope that gets explored further.
What I’d really like to see is a little development from the title character. His utter cluelessness is already very stale. I hope the writers have plans for him to take a more active role in his own show.
The modern-day streaming model of a 10-episode season means it was over before it really had a chance to get started. So my judgment will be reserved for future seasons. I want to see where they take it, but more of the same could get old fast.
Marriage (PBS) Sean Bean and Nicola (“Last Tango in Halifax”) Walker are married. He’s unemployed; her boss is a jerk. They have a daughter in a bad relationship. Stuff happens…occasionally.
Not a series for those who like dialog. Or music. Or action. The director spent 30 seconds on a shot of a car in a driveway, with no dialog. If the point is that marriage is mostly dreary and dull – point well taken.
EXTANT, starring Halle Berry and produced by Steven Speilberg in 2014 answered the question “Can Halle Berry make a TV series lamer than Catwoman?” with a resounding YES!!!
I’m one episode into Dear Child, a German crime mystery on Netflix. I’m a sucker for scenes of foreign life, like Broadchurch. Not sure where it’s going, but looks good.
