Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

Yes, my main complaint was that I wanted it to have more proper jokes rather than just outrageous situations with no punchline.

Seven episodes into Killing It. Enjoying it so far.

Finished The Night Agent, which was more entertaining than it set out to be. They left an opening for continuing the series, although if that’s to be it, that works as well.

We wouldn’t have watched The Rookie with Nathan and got caught up in it. I can’t argue with Typo_Negatives remarks. I can say that they have changed cast several times, including killing one main, which I thought was an interesting choice. That is another guilty pleasure.

At which point do multiple guilty pleasures become what I like?

I’m sad to see another Nathan Fillion series where there were complaints about behind the scenes issues.

Pretty much there always are such complaints.

The Rookie also has the “the only X in Los Angeles” problem. I think it was S2 when the main character was dating a doctor who seemed to be the only freaking doctor in the hospital, from the ER on up. Lately it’s Bailey who is a firefighter and paramedic and soldier and will probably end up being an astronaut at some point. Even for a show that clearly isn’t meant to be taken seriously, it’s a little wearing.

And don’t get me started on the Feds spinoff.

Finished watching:

One Piece (live action) - loved it. A lot. Loved the casting, loved the stories, loved the look of it - just a whole lot of fun. My daughter likes to point out that there are over 1000 episodes of the anime series and so I shouldn’t be looking for a quick resolution but so far, so good.

Continuing the reincarnation anime theme, this time it’s My Next Life As A Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom!. Another “reborn into an otome game” show, unusually the protagonist doesn’t have physical or magical superpowers - her only strength is foreknowledge of the characters and events of the game. The entire show is based around her being aware that in the game her character ends up exiled or dead and her attempts to avoid her “doom”; while she is focused on avoiding the “doom flags” she manages to unintentionally pick up all the “love flags” in the game, leading to her picking up a fanatical following of men and women alike, all madly in love with her. It’s probably just as well the show stops where it does, because the next steps are either violent fighting amongst her admirers or them all forming a cult.

rewatching frasier as the new chapter is to start in october. one thing i noticed is that the actors will react with a smile or a bit of a chuckle when someone says a good/funny line.

it is noticeable as other comedies have the actors not reacting. that always struck me as unrealistic.

Mrs. Solost and I are about 2/3 through season 2. Not enjoying it quite as much as S.1, but it seems to be getting great online reviews, so maybe that’s just us. Tim Heidecker is clearly having a great time chewing scenery playing a sleazy rich asshole.

Well, my understanding is also that what we see in any cop show in a season is more than most see their entire career. In watching SWAT, I also wonder how much they are used and see action compared to a regular officer.

I can’t fault Rookies for having the Mary Sue character, though, because all series end up doing it. I can’t think of a show that had an expert for each topic and sub topic that would require it. Instead, it goes to “scientist” to handle all science, and the like. It’s easier to give it to the character that mostly fits what is needed. Yes, though, a lot has gone to Bailey, when it could be growth for other characters.

As I understand it, it was not a choice. The actor was moved by the George Floyd tragedy. So much so that he did not want to participate in a show where racism\black cop issues were not addressed. He refused to come back.

I THINK that is what happened. I could be wrong.

Anyway. I lived in LA a long time. It sometimes irks me when they use scenes that are nowhere near Wilshire (or in the Valley, or in Burbank, which has it’s own police)

Watched the first two episodes of Krapopolis. Not terrible, but not wonderful either.

Just started Will Trent, steaming on HULU. Started off strong, but lagging a bit a few episodes in. Hope it picks up.

Yeah, more or less my reaction.

They dipped into the “and this time, it’s personal” well far too often.

Will Trent isn’t really a show about crime solvers with personal traumas; it’s a show about people with personal traumas who also solve crimes. “This time, it’s personal” is entirely the point of the show, not just a gimmick.

Everyone in the show is broken in one way or another.

Forgot to mention:

Continuing the “resurrection anime” theme, I started Am I The Strongest?. I knew it was a bad sign when we got the “breasts jiggling audibly” trope within about 30 seconds of the opening of the first episode, but I hung in there in vain hope.

What happened next was freaking bizarre, even for anime. The character is literally reincarnated as a newborn baby. The parents misread his magic level as “02” (which is very low) rather than his actual level of 1002 (in a world were 50 is high level) so they leave the baby in the woods to die. But because it’s a FREAKING MAGIC BABY controlled by the spirit of a dead slacker, we immediately get a flying baby who promptly beats up a giant magic fox thing by throwing trees at it. He then demands breast milk so the giant magic fox thing transforms into a sexy woman in a catsuit and says that the only way to give breast milk is to have sex first, demanding that the NEWBORN BABY “fill her with his seed”.

What happens after this will remain a mystery, as my brain klaxon was blaring NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE and I turned it off. Japanese people are weird.

Elsewhere in Asia, I’m two episodes into Mr Queen about a modern-day chef who finds himself transported into the body of a Joseon dynasty queen. The episodes are long and sometimes painfully slow, but the actress playing a man in a woman’s body is hamming it up to the hilt, which I’m finding quite entertaining. I’ll see if the pace picks up at some point.

I watched the first couple of episodes (on Netflix). It’s the kind of show that I would be willing to watch if I was futzing around on my phone at the same time, but I couldn’t do that because it was only subtitled, not dubbed.

We had given up midway Season 2 of Picard, but a friend insisted Season 3 is great, so we just skipped the rest of Season 2 and went straight to Season 3.

It. Is. Fantastic.

It boggles my mind that some of the worst Trek I have ever seen and some of the best are happening in the same series. Season 3 is 100% fan service succeeding where Season 2 failed and I am here for it.

(We got a summary of the rest of Season 2 and I am fully convinced we made the right choice.)

We are on season 2 of ‘Dark Winds’, a murder mystery show set on a Navajo reservation. It is fantastic.

Still recommending ‘Warrior’. Great show. Lots of action good acting. It’s set in San Fransisco in the late 1800’s during the ‘Tong Wars’. Part of the story is about Irish immigrants and their fight for work.

The fight choreography in that show is outstanding, if you like that sort of thing. Best martial arts I’ve seen on screen in a long time. But the show is very compelling even without them.

I just binged the first season of Black Spot on Netflix. I’ll watch season two over the weekend. Very cool series about a small French town surround by mountains/forests. It’s a police mystery with small amounts of horror type stuff thrown in. All the characters are just a bit strange, and the crows keep showing up. Recommend highly.

I’ve gotten hooked on French shows lately on Accorn.

My brother was here from Costa Rica for a short visit, and he binged all five seasons of Balthazar before he left. He even thanked us for it in his thank-you email.
