Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

I’m rewatching Misfits again. My teen’s Biology teacher recommended it (or “didn’t recommend,” as my teen said). I think this is my third time watching the show. I really enjoy how these young people get these weird powers and instead of trying to be heroes or really help people, they just encounter these mundane problems to solve. The characters are credible and have well-defined motivations and personalities. I think it starts to unwind down the line when actors cycle in and out but the new characters aren’t necessarily bad, they’re just not the original ones.

The Mindy Project on Netflix. Recommended, but how enthusiastic that recommendation is might depend on my mood on any given day and whichever episode is uppermost in my memory at the time. Mindy Kaling plays an ob/gyn who’s a pretty good doctor but rather a mess in her personal life. Six seasons, which I think could have benefitted from being condensed down to four. But then again, I think most series that run longer than five seasons or thereabouts are too long, so there’s that. Ike Barinholtz as Morgan is a treasure.

The Good Place substituted the word “fork” and it was not annoying. But it was also not over-used.

Yes. The interviews with the protagonist were conducted around from about 2004 until shortly before his death in 2006. The interviewer/author had no success trying to publish her book until 2017. The difference, I thought, from other camp survivor stories is that the tattooists had a bit more ‘status’ than other prisoners. Plus, this tattooist developed a personal relationship with the soldier assigned to guard and escort him through the camp. He (the tattooist) also met and fell in love with a fellow prisoner, who he eventually married. Pretty good story.

You know that that was just a placeholder title, but she demanded it be the real title. I do not care for her at all.

Me either.

Wasn’t there an in-universe reason for that, though? It wasn’t just to clear the censors, it was a humorous part of the premise (you can’t physically say that word in the Good Place).

Yes, anything that might have been remotely considered a “bad word” was automatically changed. As I believe Ellen said, “That’s a lot of bullshirt!”

I started watching The Boys, but it just seems like the story is gradually giving way to the need to show an increasing number people being turned inside out every episode.

I would not advise watching The Boys if you dislike gore.

I didn’t much care for the character she played in The Office in any way, shape, or form. mrs. dirtball wanted to watch this one, so I did—with a certain amount of wariness yet with the attitude that I’d probably be able to find something to like in it. I mean, after all, not liking a character in a different show should be no reflection on the actor, I told myself.

Lot of similarities in the characters, though. But this time, she’s more serious about her career. So I warmed up to her some. But Morgan. He’s the shining light in that show, as far as I’m concerned.

If Mindy Kaling goes on to star in another series, I hope the character is, as our Python friends would say, something completely different.

There’s a lot of great social commentary in the show, but, yeah, a lot of gore.

She’s a great comedy writer but any project she is in is designed to make herself look awesome in a fake-humble way (apart from This Is The End which she didn’t write, and which sends her straight to hell). Consider the film Late Night in particular which she did write - the entire forking film revolves around how unbelievably great she is.

I don’t mind gore, I don’t mind mega-violence.
I was disturbed at some of the scenes in The Boys. If you’re at all delicate about it, DON’T WATCH THIS SHOW.

I mean, S3 E6 (“Herogasm”) started with this disclaimer:

That was, if anything, an understatement about what to expect.

ok that would make me want to watch it even if I’ve never seen the show before

Yeah, I had stopped watching after season two but now I kinda want to watch season 3 just to see what can top the, uh, head scene from season one.

If memory serves, it’ll take about five minutes of s3.

Oh yes. Oooooooh yes.

Checked this out last night and ended up binging five out of the eight episodes. Very good series, recommend it highly!
