Pretty close. I think Reacher and Bear would have been an even match.

The Gentlemen. I really liked the first episode, but I have to say what follows has nothing more to offer, just variations on the same story, where a new set of problems crops up and the wily Edward finds a way out of it in truly unlikely fashion. Also, I’ve had enough of shows with titled English gentry, who are supposed to be charmingly eccentric. Why does everyone seem to defer to old-monied toffocracy anyway? Then there’s the criminal class, who are supposed to be dashing rascals who outwit everyone. In this one it’s the person of ice-cold Susie Glass. There’s simply no way she’s the daughter of Ray Winstone in full Sexy Beast “I’m affable but will kill you if you cross me” mode—three episodes in and I want her to get a well-deserved comeuppance. Really, the travails of the rich, whether they got that way through inheritance or by trickery is so worn out as a plot device. Yes, mummy pronounces it “mari-joo-wanna”, ho hum.

There’s a new British Murder Mystery show called Ludwig, about a puzzle book writer who becomes embroiled in police work through machinations that are a bit convoluted. It stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, with Sophie Willan, and it’s a good fun bit of nonsense. I’ve only watched the first episode (of six) but I am into it.

It’s on the BBC. I have no idea when and where non-Brits can see it, unless you acquire it the way I did.

Chucky just got cancelled. Terrible news. A very, very fun show.

I finished watching Kite Man: Hell Yeah!, the Harley Quinn spin-off. It had a great cast (RIP Lance Reddick) and it had some funny moments, but overall it was good but not great. Maybe it’s because I’m kind of lukewarm on Darkseid and Apokolips.

I’ve been bingeing Baby Reindeer on Netflix. It’s a comedy(?). Maybe dark comedy? Not sure. It is weird. I have two episodes remaining, so I have to finish it to find out what happens. I’m happy to see there will not be a second season.

It’s weird. A guy is being stalked. And it gets weirder. And it’s based on a true story.

And weirder. But surprisingly entertaining.

We watched the first episode of Zachary Quito’s new show Brilliant Minds. He’s a “quirky” neuro guy (somehow “inspired” by Oliver Sacks) dealing with patients with oddball brain problems. He’s been assigned a foursome of ducklings he has trouble connecting to. Etc.

I found it to generally good but with too much rapid fire dialogue at times. (And too much monologuing plus mental patient screaming, etc.) MrsFtG really liked it. Adding to the DVR queue.

It also has those annoying light flares like other medical shows like Saving Hope.

FWIW it’s 100% at RT with 12 critic reviews.

How did you possibly manage to not see all the real life drama surrounding that?

After seeing all of the Emmy wins for this series, I decided to give it a go. If you’re worried about investing time in a series…it’s 7 episodes, about 30 minutes each, so 3 1/2 hours all in. It becomes a very dark story after a while, but well worth the investment. Gadd was extremely vulnerable to put this “based on a true story” tale out there, and very deserving of the Emmy awards.

In case other folks haven’t been following the news surrounding Baby Reindeer, there is some controversy over which elements are fictional; Mr. Gadd’s old girlfriend is certainly not flattered by her semi-fictional portrayal.

I watched the first episode of Brilliant Minds, and was not impressed despite the Oliver Sacks connection. I may stop watching after a couple more episodes.

Speaking of which, breaking news today…

Baby Reindeer was wrongly billed by Netflix as a ‘true story’, judge finds | Baby Reindeer | The Guardian

We started S2 of Slow Horses. The actors have honed their roles and it promises to be better than S1.

After reaching the point where I could do a little puppet show of every episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, I decided to give Voyager another try. We’ve got through S1 on low-resolution (probably bootleg) DVDs, and while there’s much silliness, it’s not really much worse than ST:TNG so we’re trudging on for now. I appreciate the effort at character development – for example the episode where B’Elanna gets split into human and Klingon versions of herself; a poor episode but you can see they’re at least trying. And so shall I.

But Neelix dies, right? I was told Neelix dies.

Not my cuppa. Finished the last two episodes. I was drawn in watching the first episode thinking it was comedy.

I just dont like him.

I tried Matlock. I was worried that Bates would go creepy, but no, she is going “harmless invisible folksy old woman”. . Not bad, I will give it a second episode. Interesting twist.

I never watched the show, but I couldn’t avoid the drama in the news.

Something weird with Bob’s Burgers: besides the writer’s strike reducing the number of episodes last season the scheduling is off. For season 14 there was a fairly normal weekly schedule up until December1 7th, then the schedule goes January 7th, March 10th, May 19th, then the last three episodes of season 14 on September 8th through 22nd, followed immediately the next week by the first episode of season 15.

I watched the pilot episodes of 2 old-school network (ABC, in this case) TV light dramas, back to back. Note: it’s never wise to judge too harshly based on a pilot, since they have to cram so much exposition in that the plots tend to suffer.

Doctor Odyssey. Think of a mash-up of Love Boat and House. Medical department on a luxurious cruise ship (Don Johnson as the Captain). Could be fun to watch the diagnosis of the week (in this case, iodine poisoning and penile fracture)…but how many exotic diseases can you expect to see amongst the people healthy enough to take a cruise? The lead is played by Joshua Jackson, whom I mistook for Peter Krause at first.

High Potential. LAPD pulls a genius from the overnight cleaning crew to consult on their tough murder case. Lots of Holmesian attention to overlooked detail. Lead is played by Kaitlin Olsen who is not one of the Olsen twins, but rather from Always Sunny, and Hacks.

Both were … meh. Possibly mindless fluffy fun.
