Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

There’s a low-tier cable channel called “Heroes & Icons” that shows two episodes of Batman every Sunday at 9am. It’s become part of my weekly routine. Great nostalgia!

You’ll notice a very steep drop in the budget in Season 3.

It is amazing at how many episodes some old TV seasons had. Batman was on for only 3 seasons but had 120 episodes, 60 of them in season 2 alone.

Two episodes a week. It adds up.

Was he the old guy who left early because of illness and then just disappeared with no explanation? He wasn’t on long enough for me to realize he was American.

High Potential seems to me like a remake of Psych but without the humor and flood of off-handed pop culture references.

I loved Psych, and I agree with this assessment. Also, Shawn never did things like take crime-scene evidence home so he could examine it at his leisure. This was the point during last week’s show that made me decide to stop watching it.

Well, she’d be dressed in a uniform while cleaning, and be part of a team(which she wasnt). That was one of about a dozen errors i found- also case files are locked up securely, and the LAPD is open 24/7. She was just too annoying for me- holding up the line and stealing carts. Also if she was obsessive, there is no way she could clean like that.

That would make the evidence no longer admissible.

All your quibbles are why we’re watching it like Psych or one of those type shows. Serious police procedurals have their place, but they’re not entertainment for me – unless they’re really really well done. Haven’t seen too many of them in the last number of years.

Psych was sold as a comedy. And it was. This is supposedly a police or mystery drama.

Eh, it’s not. It’s really not. They can call it what they like. I watch it more as a comedy with a serious crime issue subplot.

Archive.org is partially back up, including this blog archive.

NCIS Origins- the first episode left me cold.

A heads-up that season 2 has started.

Let’s make this clear, a “cuppa” is an offer of both tea and coffee (most of the times) and due to the nature of probably only having a kettle, the coffee will be instant. There are certainly people who drink only coffee in the UK too (and other variations of decaff), but we don’t tend to have a pot of coffee on (and indeed, not many of us have coffee filter machines at home).

Sharpe (free on YouTube, 14 Ep., 1993-) With my young teenage son I am revisiting the old Sean Bean classic series Sharpe. A classic dime store action/adventure set in Napoleonic Spain, so you’ve got your mustache twirling evil Frenchman, sexy and mysterious Spanish love interest assassin, and a hero to save the day. Each is really a stand alone novel and the play time lasts an hour and a half for each but they’re so formulaic and light they can be watched like longer tv specials and really should be watched concurrently so I’m calling them a ‘series’.

We’ve gotten to the third one, Sharpe’s Company, so far and I would say the series has held up. Much less electric guitar solos then I remembered, but maybe that comes later or was just highlighted because it made my dad and I laugh so much. It was clearly produced on a shoe string budget, but the solid memorable acting, costumes and action keep us entertained. Definitely recommended for those looking for Indiana Jones style adventure and daring heroics.

Speaking of.

It was yesterday that I learned both the classic cartoon Tailspin and the newer and hilarious Archer: Danger Island were both cribbed from Tales of the Gold Monkey, a show that got only one season in 1982. Created to cash in on Raider of the Lost Ark it may be worth checking out in the future as well.

Years ago I had watched the first few of the Sharpe movies, although for the life of me I can’t remember where or how. I know it was not on YouTube, because it was on my television and this was before Smart TVs even existed. It may have been on one of the movie channels. I have no idea why I didn’t watch all of them, because I remember really liking them. I’ll have to check them out again (like I already don’t have enough things I want to watch, partly because of this thread).

I’m midway through Thou Shalt Not Steal. Australian road trip black comedy set in 1980. Feels a bit like something by the Coen brothers (which I thought before reading the same comparison in the wiki) or even a little like Upright.

Wife and I watched the first two episodes. It’s OK so far.

Despite the fact that I have read some crazy stories about real-life shenanigans behind the scenes of certain Marvel and DC movie franchises, ‘The Franchise’ seems to almost get a little bit too exhaustingly silly and over the top at times, with all the industry dysfunction. It is a satire, though. Will keep watching.

So, regarding the Sharpe series, what is the deal with the French weird hats? They look like some kind of misplaced beekeeper’s bonnets.

About ten or fifteen years ago, BBC America aired the whole of the Sharpe series over the course of a summer, as I remember. I enjoyed it.
