Sounds like a good start. I enjoyed the analyses of the gambling games in the anime series; the high school drama was less interesting to me, but I still thought the series was interesting enough to keep watching.
There was no fighting in Argentina. And no Argentinian civilians on the Falkland Islands.
Back to For All Mankind after a long layoff.
And…? I can’t see why that’s relevant to my post.
I guess that’s another parallel to Vietnam? there was also no fighting in the US and no American civilians in Vietnam (or very few, compared with the country’s population)
If it’s not that… I got nothing.
We started it and have sort of paused; it’s too relentlessly dark for us. I mean, Mike’s some sort of ex-prisoner who’s some sort of shady middleman/fixer between local law enforcement, the prison staff, and the prisoners themselves. Ostensibly to keep the peace in the town, although to what end, I’m not sure.
Presumably he and his older brother somehow ended up in this role, although I’m not sure how it pays him, other than being a CI for the local PD and FBI, which hardly seems lucrative and nor does it seem worth the trouble.
But it’s the whole lack of any personal interest- he doesn’t seem to have any friends, save the drug dealer guy in the lawn chair (Bunny), and everything else is just so dark/depressing.
I haven’t figured out why Mike or his older brother Mitch do this middleman role in their town. That’s the motivation they haven’t really expanded on yet- why he doesn’t bail and do something, anything else. Even as a felon, he has to have more options than this?
Yeah I know it’s not worth it to nitpick your nitpick but here I go anyway.
Like Joey says it’s just a show. It’s not high art it’s low entertainment. On that level it works. Not too dark. Likeable characters. Fun interactions.
No one said there was one lone cleaner. She was alone in that one part of the building for a couple minutes but that doesn’t mean she wasn’t part of a crew.
I don’t have an intimate knowledge of the cleaning crews of LAPD. Maybe they wear uniforms. Maybe they don’t. Not a detail that bothers me.
Being vetted means they checked for past criminal activity. They don’t check to see if you are a savant who solves crimes.
No the LAPD doesn’t close. Having that one office which is the workplace of a day shift crew be empty at night does not feel illogical.
Having physical evidence laying around at night would be a stupid thing to show. Having a white board with notes and pictures is not the same. It’s a secured office not open to the general public. Having it out would not be an issue.
You may have forgotten but when they saw the board was tampered with they went to her house and brought her in for questioning. They were ready to arrest her for tampering with the investigation. When they found out what she really did they hired her as a consultant. She’s not a police officer and doesn’t have arrest powers but she is a LAPD employee.
I get it if you don’t buy the premise. There are very implausible things in the show. There isn’t anyone in the world who is going to solve murder after murder by quickly glancing at a crime scene. A police department isn’t going to hire someone without training and experience. Those are the real logic issues with the show. If you can’t suspend you belief for that then you can’t enjoy the show. I did the job for over 25 years and everything you mentioned wasn’t even a blip on my radar screen.
I’ll join the crowd enjoying The Eternaut (Argentine version, didn’t know there were others). Something a little different for sci-fi entertainment.

Argentine version, didn’t know there were others
There aren’t!
I kinda want to start a thread on “The Eternaut” to provide local context, (for example explain how to play Truco, what’s an Envido and the infantile humor in the phrases they say when it starts raining “Relampajeando” “Se largolla”, etc)
But I don’t know if there’s enough interest.

If you can’t suspend you belief for that then you can’t enjoy the show. I did the job for over 25 years and everything you mentioned wasn’t even a blip on my radar screen.
We enjoy High Potential, too. Yeah, it’s fakey TV, but the stories are interesting. I like the characters and their interactions. It’s certainly waaaaay better than that piece-of-crap Elsbeth. That one’s not only fakey fake fake but the titular character is so annoying I want her to die in a fire.

for example explain how to play Truco, what’s an Envido
I would be interested in that. The game seems like it has some important symbolism for the show, but I feel like I missed a lot of it because I don’t know the game. It felt kind of like poker, but played with a partner
What’s next? Are you going to tell me that not every shift at Cook County Hospital is as action-packed as an episode of ER?

No one said there was one lone cleaner. She was alone in that one part of the building for a couple minutes but that doesn’t mean she wasn’t part of a crew.
The show makes it clear she worked on her own. Nor did she wear a uniform.

. Having that one office which is the workplace of a day shift crew be empty at night does not feel illogical.
Yes, I said that could happen.

Having physical evidence laying around at night would be a stupid thing to show. Having a white board with notes and pictures is not the same. It’s a secured office not open to the general public. Having it out would not be an issue.
Everything is locked up. Look, when i was with the US treasury working on *Civil * crimes- we locked everything up .

When they found out what she really did they hired her as a consultant.
Which they cant do off the cuff like that- there is a whole range of hiring procedures, including listings and interviews. It’s the law. They could hire her on a one time basis as a CI.

It’s certainly waaaaay better than that piece-of-crap Elsbeth. That one’s not only fakey fake fake but the titular character is so annoying I want her to die in a fire.
Yeah, that one has the double disadvantage of being both implausible and annoying- CBS runs constant ads for it, including little annoying bottom of the screen ads during shows we actually want to watch. Hey CBS- if you make a show annoying enuf by intrusive ads- people will hate the show before they even watch it. Not a good idea.

Are you going to tell me that not every shift at Cook County Hospital is as action-packed as an episode of ER?
Most such shows put a seasons worth of excitement in an episode or two- that is the way TV and film works.
So you understand that but are unwilling to accept the premise of an untrained savant police consultant?
Along the concept of dragons, elves and magic, sure. I enjoy fantasy.
Whatever.

Everything is locked up. Look, when i was with the US treasury working on *Civil * crimes- we locked everything up .
And I worked as a detective on crime crimes including murder and rape. Having notes and pictures in a secured room happened all the time. Actual physical evidence was secured in the evidence room. Murder boards are pretty much an invention of TV. No one actually looks at a board with pictures and strings and suddenly gets inspiration. Something similar might be put together for the benefit of illustrating to a jury but it’s just a lot of work for no benefit to do it during an investigation. But if you are going to put the show down for that then you would have a problem with just about every other cop show.
Currently watching Fauda, on Netflix.
Inna and I are really enjoying this one about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. The main character is as perfectly cast as anyone can be, the second season has been more interesting than the first, and we look forward to the next two seasons.
Would like to note that we know very little about the conflict, so if this show is completely biased or full of shit, what can I say? But it’s very enjoyable so far!
I found the changing of wardrobes to be amusing for some reason. “Lets put on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and nobody will recognize us!”
