Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

the actor who played hathaway has burned quite a few bridges with his views on many things. they would need to recast the character.

I’ve got an idea. To keep it in the family they could recast the role with his brother-in-law. Richard Ayoade

Who are you, and what have you done with Mahaloth?
I agree with every word you just wrote, whereas ofttimes, as you know, your :star: 's are my :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: 's and vice versa.

Maybe we are in one of those periodic Mahaloth-Kimstu Audience Reaction Phase Shifts where our opinions on screen entertainment briefly align.

Here are some 10 out of 10 movies I ranked. It’s not a complete list, just a starter.

that would take hathaway to a totally different height!

We started Blindspot (on Netflix) the other night. The beginning was quite intriguing - a woman with amnesia is found in a duffle bag. She’s covered from head to toe with tattoos that turn out to be a type of treasure map of hidden meanings. Unfortunately we were out by episode 2. I can’t put my finger on it, but it just didn’t keep me interested.

Very Australian, gorgeous scenery, good mystery. :kangaroo:

A Netflix show we just finished: Sirens, a ‘limited’ series. At just 5 episodes, it’s a pretty quick watch. Described as a ‘dark comedy’ with Kevin Bacon and Julienne Moore as a rich society couple. They’re vacationing at their Summer mansion on an unspecified East Coast island. Moore’s character employs a young woman as an assistant, and her older sister unexpectedly shows up, concerned her little sis is in the grip of some cultlike influence from Moore’s character. Hijinks ensue.

Decent watch. Wasn’t sure quite where the show was going until the final episode-- in addition to the dark comedy, it has elements of mystery, subtle metaphors from Greek mythology (hence the title) and even tiny hints of possible supernatural influences.

I stuck with it a lot longer when it first came out. It was just ok. I was never able to get over the bad American accent of the lead. I’ve noticed that male Aussies and Brits that don’t do a good accent chose to do a Batman voice. I find it annoying.

We watched that when it was first on and the mystery was fascinating. Then it kept going past its expiration date, imo. Her tattoos end up perfectly describing events six months even a year later. That stretched my suspension of belief too far.

Thanks for the discussion!

That’s the problem with shows with a central mystery. In order to really work they need a clearly defined end and a plan to get to the end. Trying to draw it out too long always ruins it.

Race for the Crown

from the Drive to Survive bunch

pretty good so far

This was a fairly standard whodunnit, lots of characters acting suspiciously and an early erroneous arrest, but I really enjoyed it. Maybe it was the connection to the cold case but the characters and acting were pretty good, too (talking about The Survivors here).

Moving on now to Paranoid with Indira Varma. I swear this looks familiar to me. Did I watch it nine years ago when first released?

I liked that this focused more on the actual sport than the Richie Rich shenanigans of the owners. There was a little of that but mostly it was actually about the racing. In contrast, I couldn’t finish Netflix’s Polo - very little about the horses or the sport and all about the parties and excesses of the rich players.

Enjoying the horse racing so far - nicely crafted.

The Survivors was very Australian and we talked about a second trip to Tasmania as a result…we travelled through the area twice but did not get along the coast where that was set.
Im hoping it’s a bit warmer there this time. We were chasing my partners ancestors convict past - we ended up in the very kirk her great great xxx were married…felt spooky to think of the stretch of years.
The island has done a good job of preserving the convict past…much dire.

I still think there are some thylacines out there on the wild west coast

:kangaroo:

I totally agree. Without a clear plan and well-defined timeline arc for those ‘mystery box’ shows, the plot can really get lost.

You mean Lost.

That’s exactly what I meant.

solost

Speaking of which, I’m finally wrapping up my rewatch of LOST! Knowing ahead of time that they leave a metric ass-ton of threads unresolved, it’s easier to just sit back and watch without getting all caught up in the mystery.

Not my usual cuppa but hey 6 seasons and a fun send up with some “make you jump” bits.
