Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

Art Detectives on Acorn TV. A DI specialist in the Heritage Division investigates art related murders. It’s… okay. A bit bland. Nice enough, I guess, but nothing to write home about. Also its title sucks.

Man, you ain’t kidding - that’s the best they could come up with? I’ve just barely finished my tea this morning and came up with “Drawing Conclusions” in 10 seconds. It ain’t great, but it beats “Art Detectives” by a country mile.

I noticed it, too, and put it on my watch list. I’ll give it a gander starting tonight based on your recommendation.

I know I’m way behind (again), but I started watching The Residence last night. Liking it so far, through two episodes.

We started watching Gallipoli (series, not the movie) on Prime last night. The verdict is out at the moment.

I guess since it has several episodes Asterix and Obelix: The Big Fight (French: Astérix et Obélix : Le Combat des chefs) on Netflix qualifies as a series, so I will mention it here. This was a great adaptation of the book it is based on as well as the Gaul world as well. They did a great job of mixing both items from the original series and references to current culture. For someone who grew up reading the Asterix comics (or more properly albums) this was a delight especially when they included in the very first episode a direct reference to the books.

I did watch it in French so I do not know how well some of the jokes translated to English, especially given it is so heavy on word play throughout the series (which is also true of the original), though there is much to like visually as well.

I searched, but didnt see any mention of “Badhotellet” or Seaside Hotel?

Danish series about “…the story of the guests and staff at a beach hotel by the North Sea sand dunes…. The story takes place in the years 1928-45 when the world is falling apart. The characters will go through tears and laughter in the captivating journey that takes place as times change from optimism to crisis. “

Some farce and some heavier plots. The Danes dealing with the nazi bits I felt especially timely with current US politics. Great acting and writing.

I thought it was one of the best shows Ive ever watched. It aired irregularly on PBS, but I watched all through Prime video.

My wife and I just started season 1 of Derry Girls, a show mentioned in post #6 of this thread. We’ll catch up to current stuff eventually.

a very good show. the genetics were interesting, following the family lines, seeing how the incident impacted all the families, all well done.

Yep, I tried a couple episodes a few months back and very much disliked it.

I’d say give it a try. I didn’t find it hard to follow the timelines. The one that was previously mentioned, not realizing that a court case was from a few years back, I think was probably deliberately meant to be confusing. But it all came together.

Yeah, the first episode makes you think events are happening concurrently when they’re not. But once you know they’re not, I think it’s fairly easy to distinguish the present from flashbacks.

Maybe now that I know about it in advance I’ll give it a try. It may be a while, as I’ve got a bit of a backlog of shows I want to check out - mostly from suggestions I’ve seen here.

We enjoyed The Åre Murders on Netflix. They ran a little short, however, and I wondered if that was in response to complaints that some series drag out too long.

I jumped back into this, more for a lack of anything else I wanted to watch. I had an idea of what to expect and finished s1. I’m three episodes into s2.

Season one was okay. Mostly entertaining. I really had to work to turn my brain off. I don’t think they were consistent and leaned to the drama. As I said before, the writers have to find ways to power down Superman, which is less interesting. Why give Superman something to take it away? I find it ambiguous in a bad way that when Superman stops people, I’m not sure how hard he hits them and if they survive it. It would be more interesting to figure out a way to show how hard, or not, he hits someone. The power humans all seem to be as powerful as him, which I also find strange.

That’s typical comic writing. Flash is fast but if hit, should have only slightly higher durability than a regular human. Same for a lot of the heroes but they are able to take powerful hits and keep going. I found out that Amazon Prime gives me free comic collections and I was reading a Zatanna compilation. It was about the same for her. She’s the most powerful sorcerer(ess) and so villain plans are to take that away. Okay, that’s a solid plan but then they monologue!

In season two, once again (I will use spoilers just in case) he has problems that aren’t explained well. When the bad guy is revealed to be Bizarro and he leaves a suit he is in, then the issue seems to stop. I think giving Superman a weakness that is used all of the time comes off like Flash’s whining how he has to go faster every single episode. They are doing the same thing to Lois Lane. They call her the best reporter in the world then something or someone attacks her credibility, which she has to defend. Her stories would have to have been fact checked and vetted before printing or the newspaper opens itself up to libel. Maybe it’s showing that it doesn’t work that way today with social media and people being in their bubbles.

I will probably watch more, so I’m obviously just venting. My apologies on that. I hope to get back to a few other shows, maybe Sirens or something else.

I did try and watch a bunch of older shows to see if I could get into them as I got into Castle. I tried Medium, Mentalist, Lie to Me, and maybe one other. None of them pulled me into them as they did the first time around but maybe I will go back to Medium.

Thanks for the discussion!

I watched some of it a while back. Very well done but it was too depressing for my tastes.

Tell me more.

Not sure what else to say. I saw the Zatanna book by Paul Dini in the store and then decided to be cheap and get it from Amazon. Then I saw that it was free for me in Kindle. So I downloaded it and am reading it.

One thing that does turn me off comics is when the art style changes radically within a graphic novel, and this does. I don’t mind a new consistent style in a graphic novel if it’s the same throughout. I don’t want it to change.

If you mean about the comic, it’s okay. I wanted a story of magic and I guess I’m getting it. I haven’t read much so I was expecting a nice version of Constantine. I guess I’m getting that as she helps people. Others want to take her powers or prove themselves better than her. At first, I found the backwards spells interesting but it has worn off.

I used to love comics so I will want to read a graphic novel about a character I like or want to know more. Graphic novels these days aren’t stand alone stories. Rather, they are collected volumes. Nothing wrong with that and it explains the potential art shifts. I’m finding it’s not for me. As I type this, and think about it, I think that’s what has been meh about the Zatanna stories. It’s a collection of vignettes that hasn’t formed a cohesive story.

I hope that helps!

We just started North of North, first episode is a banger but the way they keep pushing the names in front of the viewer is distracting.

Oh, got it. Yeah. I get those offers also, but I like paper books. I did grab a few free books just in case, it has come in handy a few times.
