Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

I watched the first couple of episodes of Mr. Queen, but it wasn’t dubbed into English and I’m usually playing a game on my tablet when I’m watching one of these K-dramas.

I’m not an expert on Korean romantic comedies, but I’ve found that quite a few of the ones I’ve watched have one of the main characters being a good cook.

Alien: Earth

Recommended.

I’m not sure I understand how this is a prequel to the original movie since apparently Xenomorphs are a known thing to at least some on Earth, but that is the claim. Until bout the 4th episode, I assumed this was just some time after Alien.

Anyway, well done. Better than, at least, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection.

I’m interested in the Synths that contain human minds and what will happen there. The CEO was a good villain of sorts.

Anyway, I’m not the biggest Alien fan. Even more shockingly, I find Aliens(the second one) to be really overrated. I probably liked Prometheus and Alien: Covenant the most along with, of course, the original movie.

Haunted Hotel

My wife and I are about half way through this. It’s an animated show about a family who is trying to run a hotel that’s full of ghosts and monsters. It has a really good voice cast and it’s pretty funny, imo.

We’ve watched one episode. I guess it’s a parody of a sitcom? (Ghosts).

I have been fascinated by it. I like digging into the Alien Universe more and what we see in this has been good. Sometimes creepy and scary but good.

Thanks for the discussion!

Any idea how this is a prequel? I guess only the main cast knows anything about Xenomorphs?

I’m not a huge expert on the Alien universe, but I think the idea is that in the original Alien movie the corporation that owned the ship did already know about the Xenomorphs somehow, the distress signal was a ruse or an excuse to send them to the colony with the eggs, and the secret synth Ash had been tasked with bringing a Xenomorph back at all costs, over and above the safety of the crew. So, in light of that, it’s not a stretch to think they already knew about the Xenomorphs in ‘Alien: Earth’, which takes place, I believe, 2 years before the events of the original movie.

Plus, some Noah Hawley retconning may be involved. If you haven’t seen it already, there’s a long Alien: Earth thread where some posters get pretty in-depth with Alien lore and canon.

I didn’t read it as such. Similar premise, of course, but the execution is very different. They can do things with animation that aren’t done live action.

We watched the first episode of The Lowdown last night, it shows promise. Ethan Hawke is a muckraking writer and owner of a rare book store in Tulsa, he’s very much the Dude with a little more on the ball (but not much more). It’s from the creator of Reservation Dogs which is brilliant.

This is covered in the linked thread, but here’s the 10¢ tour.

The Nostromo from Alien takes off from Earth in 2120 en route to mining outpost Theidus.

In 2122, they depart Theidus and the secret Synth Ash unexpectedly replaces their science officer for the return trip.

Later in 2122, the Nostromo receives Special Order 937 from Weyland-Yutani which redirects the crew to Archeron (LV-426) which is when the events of the movie occur.

Alien Earth takes place in 2120, whether before or after the departure of the Nostromo is never defined. There are no common characters and because the original movie doesn’t provide any backstory, there’s little continuity to enforce. We assume that the events of this series will somehow set in motion the events of the movie before it concludes (assuming it gets the runways to do so).

The showrunner has been non-committal on how “canon” this series will be and how much or how little of the various movies will be incorporated. There’s a suggestion that this show should largely stand on its own, so we may be left to our own inferences about how this show sets up the OG movies. We never hear anything about alien species running amok on Earth, so make of that what you will.

I just saw that the first ep of the latest season of Slow Horses has dropped. We’ll likely wait until they’re all available.

Peacemaker still rocks. For some reason I think Tim Meadows in Season 2 is freaking hilarious.

We watched the first episode of The Pitt. It was really good. Just based on one episode I’m not surprised Noah Wyle got an Emmy. I’m not sure how they executed a storyline in all that (very realistic seeming) emergency room chaos but hat’s off.

Looks very good

We watched this last night. I liked it a lot. Has a bit of an Elmore Leonard vibe, maybe? Will keep watching.

We’re a few episodes into ‘Black Rabbit’ on Netflix. To compare and contrast it with ‘The Lowdown’, both are gritty urban dramas with various crimes occurring, but ‘The Lowdown’ is lighter in tone, with elements of comedy. ‘Black Rabbit’ is a bit more grim.

‘Black Rabbit’ is about two brothers- one is a responsible, successful owner of a restaurant in New York city. The other is a screwup who goes through life making bad decisions and causing other people in his life to suffer for it. It’s a very well made show, but the grimmer, more realistic tone makes it a bit uncomfortable for me to watch-- I’ve known people like the screwup brother.

Guiness

Taking a wild guess that the Guiness family did NOT approve.

But then I could be wrong…

AI Overview

Yes, the Guinness family has approved the Netflix series House of Guinness because a family member, Ivana Lowell, is the descendant who came up with the idea and was involved in its creation, giving the family’s “seal of approval” for the show to tell their story.

And it appears that he isn’t trying to be a jerk to everybody, he’s actually trying to be friendly, but is very bad at it.

looks interesting… i started the paper last night. should finish tonight, leaving friday open for a good binge.

I loved when he was yelling at Economos for pranking him with his Bird Blindness. “You told me it was a duck! Was that funny? Well, yes, it was hilarious, but you almost got Titties killed!”

Tim Meadows in Peacemaker is probably the funniest character on TV right now.

But I can no longer see a post anywhere about a bird without thinking it is some kind of meta duck.
