Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

We are watching Succession. We are halfway through season two. My wife likes it a lot more than I do. I have a limited tolerance for ‘bad peoole doing bad things to other bad people’ shows, which appears to be Succession’s wheelhouse.

We finished Lost in Space. The last season was okay, but a show like this, which is really about one narrow escape after another, works best in small doses. If it had been one season it would have been a classic. Two seasons were fine. But by the third season it was obvious that the pattern would be maintained. Some calamity happens, technobabble ensues, and the family escapes by doing something crazy at the last minute. Repeat.

We just started the last season of The Expanse. Still a good show.

Riverdale continues to be insane. This season it has turned into ‘Rivervale’, an alternate universe Riverdale used as a framing device to tell episodic horror/mystery stories each week using the same characters, Ladt week Archie was served up as a human sacrifice and had his heart ripped out still beating. About time, I say.

Watching Dopesick on Hulu because I enjoy making myself miserable. On S1E3 now…

Yeah, that was a tough watch.

Side note on Lost, I believe it was 100% filmed in Hawaii. It was funny for us to watch them race around “Los Angeles” but recognize the buildings of downtown Honolulu. And downtown Honolulu played Berlin – they filled the street with Styrofoam “snow” for a wintry effect.

Well, I gave “Burn Notice” a few more episodes, but I’m done with it. Every episode is just a small variation on the same theme, which just makes it boring to me.

The spouse is now binging Crossing Lines and I’m tagging along. Lots of the usual law enforcement show cliches, but in Europe.

Also, Donald Sutherland’s character is apparently supposed to be Dutch. I would never have guessed that from his accent, which is basically “Donald Sutherland with slightly better diction”. It’s quite offputting.

My wife and I are re-watching New Girl on Netflix, and enjoying it quite a bit the second time around.

Zooey Deschanel’s goofy-sexy nerd shtick might not be for everyone, and the guy characters can be unbelievably stupid at times. If you can get past those things, there are a lot of laughs to be had, which is my main criterion for judging a sitcom.

The actors clearly had a blast making this show, and it translates to the finished product.

Station Eleven on HBOmax is The Leftovers of the COVID Age. 3 episodes in, highly recommended.

Yeah, that was a rough watch. Credit to Kat Devers, Michael Keaton, and Rosario Dawson for their performances. In fact, I tweeted on Rosario Dawson‘s Twitter that I hoped she was remembered when awards season rolls around. She replied to thank me for it, which I found infinitely cool.

I’ve been binging towtrucker on YouTube. There are over a hundre twelve minute episodes of this guy who drives a tow truck doing non-consensual towing in Atlanta.

The management of a housing plan will contract with the tow company to remove cars that do not belong on the property; cars that are an eyesore, do not run, have no tags, are in a handicap space or fire lane, etc.

He’ll drive around the property and when he sees a vehicle on his list he quickly pulls it onto his flatbed and skedaddles. Often the owner comes running. He stays calm and trie to defuse each car snatch.

Finished Dopesick. Michael Keaton deserves an Emmy for one of the most nuanced performances in recent memory. A must watch.

Still loving Station Eleven, though am not too happy they are setting up a rival ‘gang’ for the Traveling Symphony to fight against (kinda like the cult in The Leftovers). It’s probably me, but I sometimes get tired of seeing people get cast in extraordinary situations only for the plot to devolve into a man vs. man (or us vs. them) battle. I understand that, in many ways, fiction wouldn’t exist without this construction, but still… isn’t the situation interesting enough w/o adding an implacable enemy? (Yes, I know I can read the book. No, I don’t want to, at least right now. This is how I’ve started this story, and that’s how I’ll see it through. The author gets paid either way, after all.)

Same issue with Y the Last Man. (spoiler follows, obviously) Great, so in addition to all this, the President now has to battle for control against a far-right ‘Meghan McCain’ type? Do I really want to watch that? Does this story need that particular plot line? Again, I can read the source material but if this is a faithful reconstruction, it will have the same problem.

3rd run through of Ted Lasso , with my daughter this time.

We just finished season 3 of The Witcher. We all like the show quite a bit. This season’s plot got a little complex, but Henry Cavill is awesome. And the special effects are great. Love the monsters.

Season 3? Season 2 just dropped on Netflix last week, unless I missed something.

I’ve watched the five episodes of Station Eleven which have been made available to me and it seems like this series is designed to be a lengthy one because of the deliberate pace of the story telling. If it turns out like that, I’ll be okay with it because the story has the potential to be an interesting one.

Yeah, sorry. Season 2. We were also watching season 3 of List in Space.

  1. An easily avoided situation arises
  2. Everyone does something stupid
  3. Danger Will Robinson

Sounds like the plot of every “Walking Dead” episode.

Heh.

  1. Everyone split up!

For the people that have mentioned Ghosts UK be aware that they had a Christmas episode this year.
