Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

Except his powers, background and other stuff is also different.

He was boring, obscure and basically forgotten. Good for them. I collected comic books as a kid and I barely remember anything about him. He’s the perfect character to reinvent. If you want him the way he was go read an old comic book.

Okay, fine. Why not then a new name for a character who has a different backstory and powers?

Eh, why not recycle the name of a character who isn’t currently or likely to be active in the MCU?

And that’s not even getting into the issue of in-universe character name handoffs and reassignments. I like the timeline in which the Falcon is now Captain America, for instance.

I liked him. He was usually written as an immensely strong but easy-going, good-hearted lug of average intelligence, with minor comedic overtones. I sorta liked that original West Coast Avengers run with him, Hawkeye, Mockingbird and Tigra. But then I tended to gravitate towards minor characters back when I read superhero comic books (mostly a long time ago now). That said…

I pretty much agree. Minor comic book figures are perfectly reasonable characters to play around with and reinvent.

We finally got around to finishing the final season of Vera. It was a good finish to a series that never really flagged in quality.

Because they were able to do it in a creative way.

All I remember about Wonder Man from the comics was that he was an actor. The TV series checked that box.

If you were ok with season 3 of Narcos sans Pablo, then you will probably also like Narcos: Mexico.

Diego Luna, Michael Peña, Tenoch Huerta and Joaquín Cosío are all pretty great in their roles.

He doesn’t bother me, but then I’ve never read any of the books, so…

He played a psycho drug lord in one season of Goliath (with Billy Bob Thornton) and was suitably creepy in that. He was also fine in A Man Called Otto.

So I don’t really get the hate, but each to their own…

My wife and I recently finished Vera as well. As soon as Joe came back I had a pretty good idea how the series would end. It was a satisfying ending but no way it would fly in real life.

Vera cleans out her desk in the middle of the night and leaves a note for Joe basically saying “It’s your team now.” No two weeks notice, no job posting, no interviews, no clearing the hand-off with her supervisor, just poof she’s gone and he’s in charge.

They say his Lear was the toast of Croydon.

Similar reaction here - including something I started to add to my post:

like a lot of British detective series, Joe is the not-too-intelligent foil who asks dumb questions so Vera can answer waspishly. Even if she could hand it off like that, is he even remotely capable?

Where did you watch Vera?

BritBox.

Thanks.

And we finished the series yesterday. I enjoyed it for the most part, but at the same time I was continually frustrated by the sibling characters who kept almost becoming somewhat redeemable before inevitably reverting back to their selfish, petty, thoroughly awful selves.

I also didn’t much care for the ridiculous deus ex machina ending to season 3.

But the writing was consistently strong, and the performances, especially John Goodman’s, were excellent. It kind of pinballed between a live-action cartoon and a thoughtful study of flawed and complex characters. But somehow that worked.

One final thought: I expected this show to be much more cynical about religion itself. For all their excesses, the Gemstones are generally portrayed as earnest in their faith. They are foolish people in many ways, but not because they are hypocritical about their religion, which would have been an easier and probably less interesting choice.

I just started two, The Righteous Gemstones and The Beauty.
I’m only two episodes into The Righteous Gemstones but so far I’m really liking it. The first episode was really good.

The Beauty is the new Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story, Monster etc) series. The basic premise (at least as of three episodes in) is that an STD causes people to become really good looking, then at some point in the future, they become aggressively violent and explode. (Not really a spoiler, you learn about it in the first few minutes of the first episode, but I don’t want to ruin something unexpected)

I’ve never been a fan of Ashton Kutcher, but he does a great job eating the scenery in this. A raunchy, violent, amoral psychopath who is instantly recognizable as a number of real-life billionaires.

The newest episode of Dark Winds has a nice little point, and a big error-
There is a shooting at a Diner, so the R is out, leaving just Dine. (Diné) Cute.

Then a young girl walks thru an unlocked door, down a hall and finds another unlocked door where drugs & stuff are stored, inside is a cabinet full of morphine and stuff- also unlocked. No no, no NO!. Federal law requires they be locked and climate controlled.
