Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

Well yeah, you stumbled on a crank distribution center. Thirsty strangers were not in the plan for that day.

There is a drum store near me that is never open, I am sure it looks just as legit on paper.

Sounds like I bailed out just in time. I probably would have started throwing things at the TV.

I have to do a metric crapton of tedious, manual work at my desk. The upside is, the work is simple and repetitive enough that I can stream TV on my 27” monitor while doing it. I watched the whole series of Shrinking, and enjoyed it. Extremely unrealistic, but funny and engaging. I’m now on to *Foundation.” It’s been a long, long time since I read the book, so I can’t remember how accurate it is to the original story (I suspect not very), but it’s great.
Tremendous world and culture building. Great effects, excellent acting. Highly recommend.
Both on Apple.

For some reason many Brit Police Detective shows start with the protagonists wife being murdered. However, the DCI Banks books are more “thrillers” than standard police procedurals. They- at least the first couple- involve some very nasty & grisly murders.

Yeah, I hate the whole super-genius serial killer trope. In general, serial killers tend to have lower than average IQs.

We finished “Monte Cristo” last night. It was very well done throughout.

The main thing that bugged me about it was that almost no one seemed to even be trying to pronounce French names correctly. The name Noirtier (something like NWA-tee-AY in French) was pronounced NOR-teer.

I’m reading the novel right now.

A few years ago, I was reading novels written by Stephen Fry (the UK actor and comedian), one of which is called The Stars’ Tennis Balls (though in the United States it was retitled Revenge). It’s a modern retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo, set in the UK. I liked it, though I’ve never read the original novel by Dumas.

Finished season 2 of Beef. I know it is an anthology show, but the second season wasn’t really similar to season one at all. It had more of the feel of a season of Fargo (but not nearly as good).

Re : Beef Season 2…

We have two episodes to go. What a collection of unlikeable people! The first season was a black comedy about two relatively normal people who went comically off their rockers. Season 2 has nothing in common with Season 1. It’s too serious, and frankly, it’s also rather dull.

Yeah, that bugged me a bit; especially calling Chateau d’If “Castle Diff”. For those who don’t know any French, d’If is pronounced “deef”. “Castle” is a translation of “chateau”, however.

I hadn’t noticed the mispronunciations but it’s a bit weird, given that this adaptation is a French-Italian co-production.

First episode of “Half Man” on HBO. From across the pond. A little too weird for me, I think.

We just started S1 last week and are into S2. Other than one episode that ends weirdly with a partial conclusion, it’s been pretty good so far.

I’m watching for the second time. I enjoyed it a few months ago.

It’s even better the 2nd time. I’m understanding the finer plot details in the earlier episodes. The arc of the story is making much more sense.

I find that with this series it’s better to watch a couple episodes a night. Then think about them and the implications of what transpires for a day or two.

Yes, this show challenges the view to think.

.

It bugs a bit (the one for some reason that annoys me most is Villefort), but apparently it’s an international production, and the actors are from all over the place. I assume they gave up and just had them use their own accents. But, yes, other than that I’ve enjoyed the series a lot.

Surprisingly, it holds up pretty well through all seasons. I think the change in lead actors was a plus, although I like Amanda Burton. Supporting actors change like your underwear throughout, though.

That was my guess, as well. It’s like trying to get an entire cast to use a cockney accent.

And like underwear, some of them get reused.

This is actually pretty common on longer-running British murder series, apparently there just aren’t enough actors (for example, Constable Cox, who dies in S1, comes back in some unrelated role later; this happens all the time on Midsomer Murders).

Yeah, I always joke with my wife about a big series starring every out-of-work British actor.

Born To Bowl on HBO follows the ups and downs of competitors on the PBA tour.

Pretty interesting, but you may get a very strong feeling of déjà vu if you saw season 52 of Documentary Now!
