Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

> Aceplace: A single crime each episode, as I recall. I don’t remember any two-parters, but don’t hold me to that.

@Bumbazine thank you. I prefer series that feature a crime every episode. I also enjoy Two-parters.

I throughly enjoyed Dublin Murders. I got fidgety waiting for the conclusion after 8 episodes.

I stumbled upon The Boys on Prime because it autoplayed when I fell asleep. This is a show that I never would have chosen to watch - I despise superhero movies/shows. But wow - this one has a hook and it reeled me right in. I was even more surprised (and delighted) that it showed up in my feed because of the recent release of Season 5. I binged most of season 1 last night, but now I have some good material.

Gen V is an offshoot of the Boys, think probably watch it’s first Season between Season 3 and 4 of the Boys and the second after Season 4.

I started, yet another, crime doc. This one’s called Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer. 4 x 48min episodes. I have one episode left and so far it seems really good. But it’s really bugging me because one of the detectives, Frank Solerno, I’d swear I’ve seen in something else, but in this same setting (sitting in an empty bar), but I can’t figure out what it would’ve been. I’m almost positive I haven’t seen this already. I know I’ve watched some docs about big criminal/homicide cases in LA, I wonder if he was in one of those.

There’s also this

And that was based on two Tana French books (I just finished reading her latest book this morning). I liked the series, but the books were just so much better that the series suffered in comparison. I did like the two lead actors very much.

The Boys is great (I haven’t seen s5 yet, going to wait til it’s all been released and then binge it probably).

The satire is right up my street, although it does get more and more on the nose as it progresses.

Just wait until you get to the episode Herogasm. Not for the faint-hearted but an incredible episode.

They had me with the ass bomb in episode 2. Honestly, MCU completely ruined comic book/superhero movies for me. I love satire, and if the target is something I have active contempt for, even better. My nightly searches for something to watch are over for the next few weeks.

I honestly think that The Boys is more realistic than any of the MCU films or comics. Give anyone unlimited power and you are far more likely to end up with a Homelander than a Superman.

It might not seem clear at first (and wasn’t for me, since not really a superhero fan), that the Boys main heroes are a parody of the DC Justice League, with Homeland = Supes, Queen Maeve = Wonder woman, The Deep = Aquaman, A-Train = The Flash, Black Noir = Batman, Lamplighter = Green Lantern but not sure how Starlight and Translucent work from the show, and where Martian Manhunter is (from the DC comics).

There’s later a mix of more Marvel stuff. Soldier Boy seems to be Captain America, and Gen V is sort of the X-Men.

They filmed a scene from season 1 outside my workplace during office hours. I was watching from inside (through the tinted windows in the lobby)

Not to mention that punching a person using super-strength would tend to turn a regular human to mush.

I did do some background reading but limited it in an attempt to avoid spoilers, so I don’t have good links, but as I understand it Translucent is a new character (i.e. not in the comics) but derives from the Invisible Woman. Lamplighter is based on Pyro from MCU. Starlight is loosely based on Dr. Light and Dazzler. There are other parallels with both MCU and DC in later seasons (even to the point where the Vought corporation is an analog for Disney and some of the Vought “movies” have parallels with real superhero movies) but again, I tried to limit my exposure to spoilers.

In the original comics he is ‘Jack From Jupiter’ who was replaced with Translucent for the show, probably because it greatly reduced the make-up budget (Jack is mutated to the point he looks like the alien he is loosely pretending to be). They share the ability to cloak their exterior with an invulnerable force field, but without otherwise being superhumanly tough. Translucent added invisibility to that.

Superman has two weaknesses- kryptonite and magic- not to mention Lois Lane and Jimmy. Homelander has nothing along those lines. And in one alt version when Luthor murdered The Flash, Superman killed Luther and the Justice League did turn badly.

That’s the scene where they were carrying that invisible box!

You aren’t caught up yet.

(Second to latest episode, Uranium is like kryptonite for Homelander.)

Thanks, it was so over the top, and Butcher became so useless, I gave up.

The Hillside Strangler was his other big case and he’s got a couple dozen credits in IMDB as “himself”. I think he’s part of James Elroy’s pack of talking heads for hire barflies.

In an earlier post, I mentioned that my husband and I had started watching 11.22.63. We took our time with it and just finished it last night. We loved it! What a great ending.
