Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

Nope, that’s new to me, so might go there. I did watch Great News, which was of a similar type of thing and enjoyed that a bit.

I’m in Season one of Severance and it’s giving me Silo vibes. That’s ok, I like Silo.

Severance is better than Silo, but Silo is quite good. Uh, is Silo coming back??? I’ve forgotten the ending to the second season.

Bad news about Severances it that it takes years to produce a few episodes. For…uh, reasons?

Inna and I are enjoying the lighthearted, laugh-out-loud romp that is HBO’s The Leftovers. (sarcasm)

Silo is back starting on July3rd.

Yeah, I enjoyed that quite a bit and am sad there has been no season 2 so far. Neville Longbottom did quite a decent job, and, man, did he grow tall. Plus, dachshunds!

And, damn, it appears you can’t stream Small Prophets in the US. It sounds completely up my alley. If anyone notices it streaming in the US can you post that here?

Interesting trivia about Murder At Evensong: It’s based on the book by Reverend Richard Coles, who used to be a popstar in the band The Communards, and because it’s set in the 80s, one of their songs did eventually play on a radio in one later episode.

There are definitely some bizarre and funny parts in that, but the first season is incredibly bleak and stops a lot of people watching it.

According to the scuttlebutt, the season 2 delay occurred for a variety of reasons: the writers and actors strike took about 8 months all told to recover from; Covid was still a problem; rewrites were constant because of the intricate nature of the story; as the budget ballooned, Fifth Season, the small production company that owned the show struggled to pay for everything; and maybe you can add in that creator Dan Erickson was not a particularly experienced show runner (this is like his second show), particularly when the shit started to hit the fan production-wise.

But FWIW, season 3 looks like it will take another 3 years. Season 2 ended over a year ago and they still haven’t even started shooting season 3 yet.

Apple recently bought out the rights from Fifth Season and wholly owns the show now. There are also 2 new show runners and a completely remade writers room. Maybe we’ll see if those changes pay off with a (relatively) quick turnaround for season 4.

Summer 2030 or bust!

Sometimes the world looks perfect; nothing to rearrange. Sometimes you just get a feeling like you need some kind of change.

I thought Leftovers was a quality series and that Carrie Coon was brilliant in it.

Oh, for sure. She was amazing. Her final monologue/story was so well acted by her, that it changed the writers’ perspective on the finale. What went from ambiguous switched to, “She’s telling the truth” in their mind. You know what I mean if you saw it.

I’m almost through S1 of Big Mistakes with Dan Levy and Laurie Metcalf. I really like it. I loved Levy in Schitt’s Creek - I like his humor. He’s good in this one, too. Laurie Metcalf is pretty funny in this, also. I find myself laughing/giggling out loud a couple of times during each episode.

I have been watching Rizzoli & Isles. It’s an older show, but I just love these characters and enjoy all of the actors. I just learned that the actor who plays Frankie Rizzoli is the son of Beau Bridges and Angie Harmon and Lorraine Bracco are long time favorites.

I don’t like that Netflix feels the need to tell me that this is ‘highly rewatched’. I just enjoy having the show on when it’s time to sleep at night so I can easily miss a few episodes as I doze off, but their note is making me feel some kind of something.

I watched some anime (or anime adjacent) stuff on Netflix, trying to figure out my next series as I only have a few episodes of Dr. Stone and Frieren left. I’ve settled on Shangri-la Frontier. It is a “teenagers play a VR game” ala Sword Art Online, though they are not trapped and can exit the game. I also liked The Rising of the Shield Hero, where teenagers get transported into a game like world. The main character, unlike the other heroes, has not played anything like it, and has a very bad start of it. I like the premise (trying to the best of a bad situation), but at least at the moment SLF is my go-to after finishing Dr. Stone and Frieren.

Brian

SLF is a lot of fun but the main character does occasionally go off on some long side quests.

Yes, I liked the song, too!

We’ve got one more (two-part) episode left of DCI Banks which we will probably get through sometime this weekend. It looks like Annie is a goner although they left it as a cliffhanger for the final episode. Unfortunately the summary text for the final episode pretty much spoils it. Thanks Amazon/Britbox!

It is, IMO, one the greatest series ever made. There are maybe a handful of missteps or wrong notes, but it is incredibly written and produced.

I’ve bounced off it twice now, despite really liking Carrie Coon. The few episodes I’ve gotten through have just been so…dreary. I’m pretty fine with slow-moving and dark, but have a finite limit for dreary and depressive.
