Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

Watched the first two episodes of the Apple TV Cape Fear. It was mostly slow and dull. I don’t think there is much chance that there will be anything to justify 500 minutes of runtime.

Seeing Crazy Like A Fox on the Roku Channel (that 1984-86 CBS comedic action/mystery w/ Warden and Rubinstein); had never seen it before, but it seems entertaining enough through 2 outings.

Season 2 of The Chestnut Man has dropped. Good through two episodes, not quite as gory as S1 (yet).

Am going through the third volume in that Gunsmoke all-in-one (eighth-and-ninth-season), and as hour Westerns go, I think I might just have found a consistent one (better than Maverick, better than Rawhide); James Arness seems to be very much committed to it as U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon.

20 minutes, I’m hooked.

Cab’t say the same for Turn: Washington’s Spies, though. I stuck it out for 4 or 5 episodes. It’s not bad, but it’s not particularly engaging either. Anyway, figured I’d give it a go since it’s leaving Netflix on June 9. It’s been on my watchlist for a while. Well, I watched it, and then I stopped. Maybe I’d keep it as background noise while playing the computer, but it’s just not worth it with the tight deadline. Certainly not bingable.

Widow’s Bay on Apple TV

The first couple episodes are mostly just funny with a little creepiness, but by about episode 3 some really top notch Horror kicks in -but still with some really funny bits. We are seven episodes in with three to go, I think. So far only 8 episodes have dropped. We’re really enjoying this one.

I just watched the final season of The Boys over the last few days. It seems to have had a lot of criticism from fans, but I enjoyed it, as usual, for the most part. But the finale was definitely a bit underwhelming. The MAGA satire has got more and more on the nose as the whole series has progressed. They may as well have given Homelander a Trump mask by the end of it. I assume they won’t be making another Gen V season now that The Boys has finished?

Finally finished the last season of “Hacks”. It was okay, but I’m glad it’s over.

We started “Legends” last night.

I’m also watching “Bass Reeves”, about the legendary deputy marshal of the west.

I see that there is a new series on Apple of Cape Fear. This one stars Javier Bardem as the bad guy. It’s produced by Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. Also stars Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson.

Finished Half Man… Both leads were compelling characters but the series overall was grim and often explicitly and unnecessarily violent. I’m still not sure how I feel about it.

Started rewatching Widows Bay. I had watched it mainly as background noise but after the last two outstanding episodes (especially the one with Betty Gilpin) I thought it deserved better attention.

Finally finished S2 of One Piece. Still really damn entertaining.

Pretty much my take on E1 as well. My first thought was “Why do we need another remake of this?”

It’s impressive, but I find some characters to be too “one dimensional”. I know one thing about them and that is all. Monkey is great. The little CGI girl/guy they picked up this year was great.

Red hair girl is dull. Guy with two swords is dull. Guy with bandana(?) on head is dull.

Guy with two swords is the dullest of all. He has no intonation to his voice. He’s being directed poorly.

Not a series but a movie/documentary. Yesterday I started The Investigation Of Lucy Letby. There was a disclaimer at the beginning that stated they used AI to anonymize some of the people. I figured this was going to be like that Morman Doc that deepfaked the faces of minors. I wasn’t a fan, but I could deal with it.
Nope, these anonymized interviews were entirely AI generated (or at least AI filtered).

I got to the first interview with one of these people, about 10 minutes in, realized the entire scene was AI and turned it off. Fuck that.

As a non-insignificant amount of people are saying, just blur their face. It’s much less unsettling. Even if the AI weren’t unsettling, I still don’t like it. Either get the real person and censor (blur) them, interview the person off camera and use the narrator to bring that person’s side of things into the show or, and I like this one the least, have an actor read what the person would’ve said.
And, it’s not just random people online, I’m seeing articles about this doc as well. I do see some people that don’t mind or even like it, but they seem to be in the minority.

Chopper? Is male.

Nami started out well but hasn’t done much this series. I haven’t read the manga or seen the anime so I don’t know whether that changes ahead.

Hey - he’s got three swords.

But yeah, his shtick is a little limited at present. Again, he was interesting in S1 but considerably less so in S2.

Captain Usopp? The Hero of Little Garden? He has his moments.

And you’ve left off Sanji the chef guy, who has definitely had more to do this season.

Part of the problem is that the show is weird-character heavy. There was more focus on the various Baroque Works characters and the giants and the doctors and the king and Dalton to the point where the protagonists are getting lost in the midst of it all.

I’ve kinda soured on Legends. Three episodes in and I’m finding it confusing and boring. Also, two of the characters basically have nothing to do but stand in a deserted building and stare out the window. E1 showed promise, but it’s not paying off.
