I just finished the series finale of Inspector George Gently (PBS). I very much disliked the Bacchus character; I get that he’s the foil, the Yang to George’s Yin, but I seldom found anything redeeming in the character (the actor of course is great).
But I liked the stories and enjoyed George’s approach, so I kept watching, and now here we are, the end, my friend.
The ending was unexpected, until it wasn’t. About 10 minutes before the end I got the feeling they might go this way.
I’m sad there are no more episodes. I note that in the few episodes that made up series 8 there are some unmistakable parallels to what is happening in the US, just more latent in the show than the outright public corruption we see in this timeline in America.
I wanted something funny to watch, for a change so I’m rewatching The Middle. I have to say, I laugh out loud at least once during every episode.
I’m attempting to watch Talamasca: The Secret Order. I’m about 3 episodes in. I’m not sure if I’ll stick with it. I feel like half way in, it’s still moving kind of slow.
Paradise (Hulu, 2 se.) My wife and I are in the middle of season two and loving it. Light Sci-Fi/Apocalypse theme that manages to avoid most of the standard tropes and breathes fresh life into the genre. Every episode is entertaining and the cliff hangers to the next episodes are sharp.
I loved The Middle in its original run, and now occasionally catch an episode. But to help keep it funny, I’ll fast forward past scenes with just the parents (Frankie is so whiny) and just watch the scenes with the kids. Sue is always hilarious, sometimes sadly so. I wish they would have developed the Sue in the City follow-on series like originally planned.
I got a sub to Acorn, so of course first thing I did was watch new seasons of Brokenwood and the Chelsea detective. (Both are A+). Then I tried Inspector Ellis, and that was good- and different.
You’re Killing me- not for me.
Now I am trying Hinterland. If you liked Shetland due to how atmospheric it was, then this show set in Wales might be for you. Maybe a bit too dark for me, we shall see.
Before that it was “D.I. Ray” from PBS which was way too much about the police being discriminatory to a East Indian woman- Parminder Nagra was good, but I did not like the show.
I like Police Procedurals. I do not like amateur detective shows in more modern times (Sherlock was great, at least to start). Shows like Elsbeth and High Potential grate on me. I gave my rant about High Potential some time ago here.
I’m not sure where the right place to post this is, but a thread of its own seemed a little out of place. But the entire series of Star Trek: The Next Generation is on sale at Fandango today for $20. I know, I know - digital ownership is not actual ownership. But other than buying it at Apple, Fandango is likely the next most stable platform you could purchase it on.
I’ve also started Talamasca, and also finished episode 3. It is only 6 episodes. At this point I’m not 100% sure which side Guy is on – possibly planning on playing both sides against each other.
I will likely finish the series, but it isn’t my primary watch.
Friday night for me is Falling Skies, followed by an episode or 2 of Shangri-La Frontier
Talamasca, along with The Rising of the Shield Hero are my other steaming options at the moment.
I came in late to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. For the last couple years it’s been in my rotation for hotel room viewing while traveling for work. I really love this show.
Last week, I got to S10,E4 “Charlie Work,” which is perhaps the best half-hour sitcom episode ever made. Fight me.
The Charlie-centric episodes have always been among my favorite Sunny episodes. I was going to say, if you enjoyed ‘Charlie Work’, wait until you see ‘Flowers for Charlie’, but according to IMDB, ‘Flowers for Charlie’ came first-- I could have sworn it was later than Charlie Work.
My favourite episode is “Bums: Making a Mess All Over the City”. Charlie Day as Charlie Kelly as Al Pacino as Frank Serpico is a tour de force. Feast your ears on that Spin Doctors mix!
No argument from me that it’s a strong contender, definitely in the top five. And straight up, my favorite Sunny episode. “Mac Bangs Dennis’ Mom” runs a close second, though.
Last night I watched the season 2 finale of Ludwig. It was excellent. A really funny and cleverly constructed show. There will be a Christmas Special episode in December, and then season 3 should appear much sooner as they are reportedly filming for it imminently.
