Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

It’s not something that I notice during an episode. Only later, thinking about whether it’s stood the test of time.

I just finished the Lizzie Borden show. Overall, I liked it. The only big thing I had an issue with was the Aileen Wuornos stuff. It was unrelated and a waste of time. The first time it popped up, in the beginning of an episode, I stopped and restarted the episode multiple times before deciding that it was a Netflix glitch and it was playing Monster (the movie about Aileen Wuornos) instead of Monster (the Lizzie Borden mini series). I FF’d through that entire part without even realizing it wasn’t Charlize Theron, but rather Sarah Paulson. Don’t get me wrong, Sarah was, as always, great, this just wasn’t the time or place for it, at least not IMHO.

I love that show, maybe because there are no computers or cell phones. Also, many police officers and others have said it is one of the most realistic cop shows ever on TV.

Well, other than the fact it shows Lizzie Borden as guilty, when in fact she was not. In other words, Netflix fictionalizes the incident for the views.

She was acquitted, just like she was in real life. In any case, it might be what YOU had an issue with, but I didn’t.

I’m okay with that. It’s not a documentary, it’s a TV show.

We both thought it was seriously odd in its style, but I thought worth watching overall. The Aileen stuff was… bizarre. It made me wonder if she really did have a Lizzie Borden obsession, went to the house etc (and by the way, can you really stay there for bed and breakfast?! That is messed up). Apparently this is all made up. So I was left wondering what the point was a little, perhaps an attempt to compare two (one alleged) female serial killers who had been abused?

When I was trying to figure out if I was even watching the right show, one of the comments I saw was along the lines of ‘They rewrote Aileen Wuornos’ story and had her telling a rewritten version of Lizzie Borden’s story’, or something like that.
With that in mind, if the Aileen Wuornos stuff had started at the very beginning, That is if, for example, the season opened with Aileen and Shelby getting to the Borden house (which, BTW, wasn’t made into a B&B until after Aileen was in jail), they could’ve set this up as us seeing a reenactment through Aileen’s eyes as Shelby read the book to her. Exactly the same way we saw Elizabeth’s story through the eyes of Lizzie as Maggie read to her. The way it not only randomly showed up in the middle and was initially presented as a very long uninterrupted clip that functioned as a cold open for one of the episodes made it seemed unrelated.
Also, and maybe I was alone here, but Sarah Paulson as Aileen looked so similar to Charlize Theron playing her that I really did just assume they inserted a long clip from Monster and I skipped past it that first time. I was confused more than anything.
And, I want to re-reiterate, Sarah Paulson was great in this role, it just wasn’t the time or place for that performance, IMHO. Also, I’m not going to go back and re-watch it, but that was Sarah playing her in the court scenes, right? It seemed pretty spot on based on what I recall from watching Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers.

We watched the season opener for SNL .
It’s always hit and miss, this time we made it half way through weekend update , which even in a bad episode is normally the best part, and gave up.
Awful.

Opening sketch and Weekend Update were both weak and largely unfunny. Pretty lame considering how much time they’ve had to come up with good material.

Jeremy Culhane’s take-off on Tucker Carlson is spot-on, though. He’s really got the annoying mannerisms down. And why did they wait until 12:35 to do Weekend Update? That usually always falls in the second half-hour, around 12:20-ish.

We very rarely watch anything else on the show but what we saw awaiting Weekend Update was not worth the precious minutes of our lives we wasted on it.

Line of Fire - Mondays on NBC after The Voice

Watching the 2nd episode now.

I’m cautiously hopefull the series gets better.

I find the mother/daughter competition on cases annoying. Mom is with the Marshall’s and daughter is FBI. They shouldn’t be working the same cases. Instead we’re forced to watch this silly one-upmanship. It’s been a big part of the first two episodes.

I’ll keep watching and see how the show develops. Hopefully the writers will make adjustments.

It feels strange watching a new show. I’ve gotten spoiled by binging episodes of old shows. Waiting a week seems weird.

My thoughts exactly.

I saw the first episode of that and it’s going to be one of those shows with a season-long or series-long arc (something about an attempt on the life of a former president, plus a son of the main character who is believed to be dead). It doesn’t seem that compelling that I want to commit to seeing the mystery resolved, so I’m probably not going to continue. I still prefer episodic shows.

We watched the first episode. My husband said he didn’t really care for it. I’m on the fence. I told him we have to give it at least one more episode before we decide if we’re in or out. It’s too bad, I like Peter Krause.

I like his role as the family patriarch and senior Secret Service director.

They’ve hinted the family might be targeted by a kiĺler. That sounds potentially interesting.

I’m curious to see how the story develops.

I may still drop out if the writing doesn’t get better.

We’ve been watching “Party Down,” a sitcom that aired on Starz many years ago and is now available on Netflix. The plot: Six Hollywood wannabes make a living working for a catering company. Each episode is a different party. There are apparently three seasons of it spread out over several years. We’ve watched 3 episodes, and there are enough laugh-out-loud moments to keep us interested. If you’re looking for something short and amusing, we recommend it so far.

I watched Party Down when it first aired; it was a great show. The first two seasons were in 2009-10 but the third season didn’t appear until 2023.

I enjoyed the moment where they had to burn and damage an American flag to match the one they lost or destroyed. I think it is in the first episode. Such a funny thing to have to do.

We finished the latest season of Only Murders in the Building (Hulu) and it was a real letdown. I’ve enjoyed the previous seasons as very cozy whodunnits that give Steve Martin and Martin Short a platform for razzing each other, surrounded by a zany cast of guest stars. But man this season was a stinker: the plot was overly convoluted, too many guests, the editing was terrible, Dianne Wiest forgot how to act, I could go on. I barely laughed the entire time. The whole thing felt rushed and slapdash. I hope they can regain their mojo, but I am not going to be rushing to watch next season, if I do at all.

I think the same about Only Murders, though I think there was a gradual decline beginning the year before. I hope the next season is back up in quality?

Next season of Only Murders would normally be out by now, but it’s coming December I think. Also set mostly in London.

I also liked Burning Love with some of the same actors.
