We finished this last night. Mostly it didn’t seem to know what it wanted to be, sometimes playing as silly parody and sometimes as straight thriller, and not really working as either.
And I am by no means a pearl-clutching snowflake, but I have to say I found the fight to the death against a 9-year-old girl to be somewhat disturbing and in poor taste.
I binged Reacher this weekend on Amazon Prime. I enjoyed it but it was like they took a decent idea for a 90 minute movie, then figured out a way to draw it out for eight 40 minute episodes.
I saw the trailer where Reacher has a strong reaction to someone’s treatment of their dog. Some people need punching and he would appear to be the guy to do it. I’m in.
We’re all caught up with Ozark and trying to decide what to do next. We’ve started Raising Dion, but it doesn’t have the same oomph. I’m not sure anything has the same oomph.
I mentioned upthread how I tired with SD S2 midstream. You’ve got to expect silly technobabble explainations in a superhero show, and that is okay as long as it is a brief side-mention (“Peter Parker was bit by a radioactive spider!”) But a big part of the season focuses on the technobble and the incredibly awful mischacterizations of how science and medicine work. You get to hear a lot about the triple-helix DNA of powered people, and see problems solved by mixing the flask of blue liquid with the flask of green liquid, and entire areas of research and development being created, tested, and recreated on a timeframe that makes the forensics in an episode of CSI: Miami look leasurly and drawn out.
I binged Station Eleven this weekend. It was indeed very hard to watch regarding the pandemic stuff. Especially when it’s snowy in the show, as it’s snowy here, and I’m isolating. I took some breaks to go outside in the sun with the dogs. Even though there’s 20" of snow on the ground, at least there’s people driving by. It was a good show, though. Glad I watched it. And I am also glad to find that the graphic novel was noted as being pretentious. Whew, it wasn’t just me!
I’m working my way through The Great from Hulu before its 3rd season comes out. Not particular liking or hating the show. I just like Nicholas Hoult.
Just watched The Curse. Think a bit A Simple Plan, part Goodfellas, except with all morons. Season one ends mid- story arc, so there’s gotta be at least one more.
I gave TWD a try years ago and made it about two episodes in. Sweaty southerners yelling at each other was all I took away from it. I have a lot of friends who have hung on the show since the beginning and I kinda feel I’m missing some important cultural currency, but I’m far too behind to catch up now, and I’ll live.
Two episodes in to F is for Family on Netflix. I had no idea this was five seasons in, as I’d never heard anything about it, and I like Bill Burr.
The pilot was uneven, and the dad was very unlikeable, but episode 2 was a lot better, with a few laugh-out-loud moments. I suspect this show might eventually go to some very dark places. I’ll stick with it for now.
Personally, I think it’s quite good. Very funny and a few good motivational moments in each episode that come across as reasonably sincere.
I’d venture to guess that the complaint that most have (the reviews on it are mostly negative except at Lawfare) is that the military is the hero and neither political party gets bowed to - which includes things like having the general offer a reasonable explanation for why he’s okayed paying $10k to launch oranges into space, and making TV Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez come out looking bad.
The White House (i.e. Trump and crew) are clearly the dumbest bastard’s in the world compared to Pelosi and AOC but the Executive branch’s orders are possibly so beyond realism (i.e. played accurately to life) that the jokes at their expense probably don’t come across as harsh as the jokes aimed at the left.
It’s a show for non-partisans and those who can take a joke, so I suppose it’s not too surprising that there isn’t a lot of love for this production.
Finished Season One of Reacher. It was entertaining but mostly just dumb violence. Still can’t get over the ugly old mayor being the same actor that played D-Day in Animal House.
Likewise, I’ve only watched one more episode of Murderville. I’ve heard the Kumail one is very good. Marshawn Lynch is charming in his, though (and do not run at him with a baseball bat. You will lose.) Improv and plays always make me nervous-I get worried the actors will mess up.
We happened upon Forever on Prime, with Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen.
Not what I expected it to be, and it takes two episodes (of 8) to even get to the premise. But those two episodes sucked me in and I will finish it out.
If you decide to check it out, I suggest not reading any synopses beforehand. Go in cold.
