Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

The first few episodes are fairly different from the eventual show. It starts fairly moody, trying to have some intrigue, and (based on the one lady) sex positive. It turns into a family friendly, physical humor comedy with light detective work, and is good from there.

Possibly, you could just skip the first few episodes and you might be fine. I’m not sure. It’s been a while.

I saw Taika Waititi’s name and that got my interest right off. I also recognized Murray (Moo-ray) from Flight of the Conchords, whom I really like, but I found the whole thing just a little over the top so I only watched a couple episodes before giving up.

Recently watched The Thing About Pam about real like killer Pam Hupp, played by Renee Zelwigger. A little strange at first because it plays out like a dark comedy, complete with a Keith Morrison/Dateline narrration, but it was actually quite good. RZ is awesome and charismatic yet frightening as the title character. Six parts.

Finished watching Tokyo Vice on HBO MAX. Good story, very well made show, but very unsatisfying ending. Of course they’re setting up for another season(s), but basically nothing was resolved at the end of the final episode. Nothing.

Finally caught up on all of The Marvellous Mrs Maisel to the end of Season 4, which remains delightful if often silly and anachronistic.

Still pootling slowly through season 2 of Russian Doll as I’m enjoying the weirdness of it.

And I’ve started watching Taxi Driver (no relation to the De Niro film) which is a Korean Equalizer type show about an mysterious private agency that helps people get revenge. Not sure where it’s going - after two episodes the first round of victims are now living happily ever after and the first round of bad people are…in cages in some guy’s basement. I suspect that won’t end well. The show does, however, actually offer an explanation of how the agency gets funded, so that’s nice.

The only twists had been telegraphed from very early on and not coming together anywhere near well enough for a season closer.

Just finished S2 of The Last Kingdom. It’s entertaining but there are too many “cavalry arrives at the last minute” scenes for my taste. It’s good in the sense that they spent the money for great locations, cinematography, costuming, etc. Decent actors. The lead actor’s accent is starting to grate on my ears a little. Much like Vikings.
Not (again, IMHO) a top tier series but plenty entertaining.

“The Staircase” on HBO. Drama series based on real events surrounding the death of Michael Peterson’s wife. Starring Colin Firth and Toni Collette. Slow moving but well done.

Just started “What If.” Interesting enough to keep going, but I have to say Renee Zellweger looks fantastic.

The second season of AmazonPrime’s Undone was excellent.

Watched three eps of “Julia” on HBO last night and really like it.

Just started the Mike Myers show The Pentaverate. It’s his patented schticky toilet humor broad comedy where he plays many characters under heavy makeup. It is self indulgent to the max, but I did laugh along with the eye rolls. He does give some other actors a chance to shine, which is nice. Also, his riff on conspiracy theory nuts is refreshing, these types of folks have such a large presence in society but the entertainment media injudiciously ignores them as characters.

Season 2 of “Hacks” (HBO) started. Episode one was not promising.

We liked it- especially the UFC fight. We didn’t want Season 1 to end so maybe we were just excited to get more…

I enjoyed Outer Range so much I completed it in two evenings. Had I begun on a Friday night I’d have watched nonstop.

We finished “Julia”, which was quite satisfying. Sarah Lancashire did an excellent job in the title role. I see that season two has been green-lighted.

The “guest appearance” at the end of the penultimate episode was kind of a cheap shot, but I found it really touching. Can’t wait for the three-way with Alastair Cook and Jim Henson in Season Two.

I had never watched Dirk Gently before and am enjoying it. Just a few episodes into S1.

My only worry is the comment earlier in this thread that it was canceled with threads left untied.

We are loving the show! I remember watching the show when I was younger (we only got a couple channels with the antennae and PBS was one of them), but it was in color and she was always much older. Last night, we found the first show, Boeuf Bourguignon, on Youtube and gave it a watch. Very neat to see the real Julia versus the show version. Sarah does do an excellent job!

I saw where there is a new Netflix series called “Lincoln Lawyer”, based on the book series by Michael Connelly. I was very hopeful, but the first episode put me to sleep. It has every cliché one can imagine and the title character actor seems to have a mouth full of mush and very little, well, character. I’m also less than happy with the new season of Bosch at this point. It’s okay, but my attention wanders.
