In fact, I would liken Little Britain being removed from Netflix and Blackbox for blackface portrayals to if All in the Family were removed from a service for that episode in which Archie appeared in a minstrel show.
We tried to watch “Eureka”, but couldn’t even get through the first episode. Watched the first two episodes of of season 6 of “Better Call Saul”. It really keeps the flavor of Breaking Bad, and seems like it’s going to be a good season. They’re doing that stupid thing where they split the season and make you wait for months to see the second half.
We’ve been watching Feria. It’s horrific. I’ve been hiding in a book and I can’t wait until it’s over.
Watching Yellowstone which is the same story as Downton Abbey: a land-rich/cash-poor, agricultural-minded family fights against changing times and increasingly sophisticated enemies to maintain both their standing and their property.
Just started the new season of Russian Doll, which I am excited about. Natasha Lyonne remains a fucking gem, and I’m a fan of Sharlto Copley’s other work so it was nice to see him appear. The writing seems a little looser than Season 1 but it’s still early.
The Stranger (Netflix) - a British 8 part limited series about a missing woman and a career blackmailer who may know something about it. I just finished it and the juice was barely worth the squeeze. Adapted from a novel who was not the author for a tv adaptation, perhaps something was lost in the translation. I liked many of the characters, but the plot moved far too slowly and the end wasn’t thrilling.
Ozark (Netflix) - I am in the middle of season 4 and I am near giving up. It’s too depressing and stagnant. Darlene is just ridiculous in an unbelievable way. Jonah, a 14 year old, creating and running his own money laundering software is just laughable. The writers have created a point they don’t seem to be able to write themselves out of so every episode is the same as the last, it’s like the bear cages in Lost all over again.
Just finished episode three of “61st Street” on AMC. It’s an ‘us against them’ series about the evil cops persecuting black folks. It’s engaging so far and I’ll be curious to see how it progresses.
We didn’t make it through episode 1.
I saw the name “Forest Whitaker” and I’m a big fan. The modern music (rap, I guess) is surprisingly effective. Very strong first couple of episodes, will keep watching. By the way Vincent d’Onofrio and “Gus Fring” (Giancarlo Esposito) is also here. Watching on Hulu.
I’m current on Outer Range, which is holding my interest but I may not be a particularly “discerning” viewer.
Also just watched the initial episodes of Under the Banner of Heaven. If it’s an accurate portrayal of a small Mormon town, then that is a very alien world to me.
We’re watching Outer Range and enjoying it. We just finished Raised by Wolves, which I ended up liking more than I thought, and Slow Horses, which I recommend. We’re in the middle of The Outlaws, which is about a group of folks doing community service. It’s a lot more complex than I expected, and I recommend this as well.
Today we’ll start Ozark Season 4 part 2 I expect. My husband, who watches The Walking Dead to de-stress, finds it too stressful to binge, so throws hands up I’m not sure how long it will take to watch. If it were entirely up to me, I would have watched it all Friday.
A couple of weeks ago, I started to watch Our Flag Means Death on HBO Max and I finally finished it this weekend. Initially, I really liked it, partly for the crazy premise (and apparently one based in reality) but I found it less compelling as it went along.
I had the opposite reaction. I barely made it through the first episode, even though I like Rhys Darby.
Yeah, it went from badder to better for me.
Late to the thread; just wanted to mention Modern Family, as I see it’s been discussed upthread. Like many others, I was highly impressed by the first few seasons, but, starting around season three or four, it just got more and more stupid, and I developed a strong dislike for the rest of its run. I still think those initial espisodes are among the best I’ve seen in that format (sitcom), and I always wondered what could have gone so horribly wrong.
So, I just want to say that I noticed the other day that the turning point coincides with the actors’ failed negotiation and subsequent litigation to increase their pay. The Wikipedia entry says:
…but talks broke down to the point that the fourth season’s first table read had to be postponed.
I’ve watched the first episode of the latest “Goliath” season and struggling to find the will to watch the rest.
Watched the first episode of the newest “better call Saul” and was right back into it and gripped.
One thing that occurred to me was that in “Saul” you have a wide range of well rounded and interesting characters, In “Goliath”, far less so. If Billy-Bob isn’t holding your attention then there is no-one else to do some of the storytelling heavy-lifting.
Anyhow, one little treat I found was “Witchfinder”. On the BBC it basically an odd couple comedy with Tim Key and Daisy May Cooper as witchfinder and accused witch on a bit of a road trip to Chelmsford.
Written by the Gibbons brothers (recent Alan Partridge writers) it is gentle and understated but I very much enjoyed it and you can play “spot the UK comedy actors” as you go, they are all in there.
I started to watch The Baby on HBO last week. A 38-year-old woman who never planned or wanted a baby has one land on her (literally; the baby fell into her hands). But this is no ordinary baby. She grows to realize that it may be malevolent as others around her die. They’ve aired two of the eight episodes so far.
Also enjoying Outer Range but worried about it coming together successfully at the end.
Our Flag Means Death was good fun.
S2 of Russian Doll disappointed.
Not crazy about either the new Barry or The Flight Attendant seasons so far but I’ll stick with them.
I gave up on Russian Doll two eps into the first season. I gave up on Raised by Wolves, but I’m giving it another try since the second season was released.
Not a tv series, but I’ve given up on the Fantastic Beasts films. I just can’t get thru the first one.
Two recommendations, both on HBO Max: Julia (how Julia Child’s The French Chef came to be) and Starstruck. Both are charming, and Starstruck is quite funny.
I’m into season 2. This is really good! Great writing and acting…the intro mentions that it’s based on some real events and figures but some was fictionalized and all. Highly recommend.
Hulu has seasons 1 and 2; apparently 10 more episodes are coming in 2023.
