Barrys quiet monologue about photographing in sleep, switching their dog, leading to suicide is possibly the darkest funniest thing I’ve heard. Even better than “suddenly seymour” as password for the bomb."
I tried the first episode of Landscapers but I couldn’t get into it. I adore Olivia Colman, but the show just seemed bleak and, I dunno, knowing ahead of time what it’s leading to put me off a bit. So, I stopped about 20 mins in (I’ll return to it later – maybe I’ll be in a different mood and more receptive). Then, I started Beforeigners which captured me immediately. I’ve finished the first ep. The only thing that confused me was that shortly after the intro, we see a caption “a few years” later, and that young cop looks 15 years older and now has a kid and his wife has left him for another guy…in a few years?
I’m watching the first season of Foundation again. I read the Asimov books, and can’t wait for next season. I’m looking forward to plot stories about the Second Foundation.
it’s not for wrestling fans either… well anyone whos been a fan for a few decades because everything is dated wrong or with the wrong people, that’s not even close to the real people it’s portraying …
on the other hand, I have discovered the joys of pluto tv … they have “channels” devoted to single shows or categories like I can watch mystery science fiction theatre 3000 from the first season onwards … o r I can watch the original run of iron chef japan in about a week or two …
Best show I’ve watched in a long time is Severance on Apple TV. The premise is that people can undergo a procedure where their brains are split in two (severed), with one that is aware of their life at work, and one that is aware all the other time. So one of their selves shows up at work… and then is immediately leaving work. And one is just at work all the time, no sleep, no nothing. Interesting premise, but then takes it in a number of interesting directions, very very well thought out. And a lot of interesting moments I did NOT see coming. SUPER frustrated to come to the end of S1 and realize that S2 is not coming any time soon.
We just finished the documentary version of “The Staircase”. Sometimes a bit boring, but ultimately a good education in criminal trials and a decent character study of those involved in the 15+ year slog for the family.
Caught up on We Own This City, still in season one, on HBOmax. I think I noted that it’s by the same people who did The Wire, and it’s a tale of multiple investigations of differing Baltimore cops by various government agencies - the FBI, Internal Affairs, etc. Still on-going, I assume there are a few more episodes to go before Season 1 wraps up. It takes about 2-3 episodes before you really understand the different timelines and investigations, but is really enjoyable if you like these sort of gritty procedurals. I can see this wrapping up in one season, but like The Wire (which had a satisfactory S1 ending had it been cancelled), there’s nothing to say the story can’t continue with different bad cops.
Also started All Rise, another HBOmax (from 2019) offering starring Simone Missick as a newly appointed LA judge and Jessica Camacho as a public defender. Just watched the pilot, so who knows where this one will end up, but right now it’s feeling a bit like Sports Night, very early Sorkin: the relationships matter far more than the accuracy of the law or legal proceedings.
I had watched it when it initially aired on CBS, and was bummed when it was cancelled after two seasons. Then I just found out that there’s going to be a third season airing on the Oprah Winfrey Network started June 7.
I’m binging my way through Stranger Things for the first time. I’m about halfway through with season 3, and the most unrealistic thing about it is that a girl as gorgeous as Natalia Dyer could end up with someone as odd looking as Charlie Heaton.
(Tongue-in cheek; I know they’re dating in real life)
Just finished The Last Kingdom on Netflix. The series is a bit over-the-top at times, and some plotlines are silly and repetitive (oh no, a ruse to cause discord and strife. oh no, yet another star-crossed romance for the main character. and what’s this, an apparent betrayal?).
But I like a semi-historical drama that makes me learn things, and it brings medieval England to life in an entertaining and educational way.
There was only one episode remaining and it was weird - you learned the in-show fate of one of the major characters via a cue card. Worth watching, maybe worth a 2nd viewing since it was rather complicated and it would be nice to see the threads develop.
Started The Staircase, mentioned above, the opening scene definitely starts things off, that’s for sure!
I don’t know if you stuck with this, but it veers off in a different direction after the first one. A dissapointing one I didn’t expect.
(I thought the guy in the room was going to be an alien not some human person on the run from a secret society “guarding” alien artifacts. I wanted the alien story, even if it turned into the remake of "Cocoon* I thought the first episode was pointing towards.)
Just started re-watching previous seasons of Better Call Saul in preparation for the final season becoming available on NF. I had forgotten a lot. Just watched the episode with crazily painted Hummer-baseball card guy. I had totally forgotten that whole thing.
