“Under The Banner of Heaven” (Hulu). A series based on the book by Jon Krakauer relating the true events of the murder of a Mormon family. Starring Andrew Garfield and Sam Worthington. Truly creepy Mormon stuff, but the story-telling just misses the mark. Not sure why, although continuity is a problem.
The only original part of the story were the lives of the fictional cops and they just didn’t do enough with that to set the drama apart from a true crime documentary. The resolution of the Garfield character’s conflict was sewn up practically by magic.
A miracle from Heavenly Father!
I may have to read the book. I like Krakauer’s other work.
Despite the series referring to it as “true crime”, that really doesn’t describe Krakauer’s nonfiction book. It’s a general survey of the excesses of the early Mormons and the modern FLDS and the struggle that the LDS has had in reconciling their past with what they want to be seen as a mainstream faith. The real hero of the book is Juanita Brooks, a Mormon historian, who had the courage to dig up the truth about the Mountain Meadows Massacre.
Stumbled on and started watching First Kill. It is profoundly cheesy but I think it is something meant seriously and not as a goof?
Besides the profoundly cliched story, I believe the production budget for the series was roughly 15 minutes of a Stranger Things episode.
We’ve started watching For All Mankind. It’s a great show. I expect we’ll watch most of it today.
If I can tag upcoming shows, shout out for the new season of Evil, which starts on Sunday.
Peaky Blinders newest and final season (until the film) started out slow and not as good IMHO as the other seasons, but OMG, that final episode!
Halfway through the season, it’s just really starting to roll.
Watching the newest season of “Borgen” on Netflix. A Danish political drama.
The title of that show is in perfect synergy with your avatar.
The wife and I are looking forward to the Dark Winds series starting tomorrow. We’re big Tony Hillerman fans. (The Dark Wind was his fifth book.) From the commercials though, Lt. Joe Leaphorn looks emaciated, while I believe he was a little on the chunky side in the books.
I’m looking forward to it too.
Alias Grace (Netflix, 2017) we are only one episode in to this limited series but I love it already. I am a sucker for period dramas so I watched the first episode by myself, I liked it so much I pulled in my Handmaid’s Tale loving wife in the mix and enjoyed watching the first episode even more.
I’ll come back to this as we watch more, but it’s so nice not to stumble on more dreck I had to say something.
I’m planning to watch the new Borgen season; my wife tells me it’s been a decade since the last? Definitely my favourite of the Scandinavian TV I saw when it was trendy some years back (I was a bit underwhelmed by The Killing, and so on).
I previously watched and enjoyed Season 1 of The Beforeigners, and just watched the first episode of season 2. I might give up on it because of the Jack the Ripper tie-in. Someone please tell me if I should keep watching or just give up on it.
That’s the story arc for the entire season, so if you don’t like that, there isn’t much to stick around for.
Yeah, I didn’t realize it had been that long, but we watched the original more recently than that.
I still liked the 2nd season - the Jack the Ripper story line was not great but there is still some original story twists and also the fun times of a Viking king trying to reassert his “power” in modern times (“The king yields to no one!”). It wasn’t as good as the 1st season but if you enjoy the two leads and the very odd world building, I thought it was still worth watching and am looking forward to season 3.
So far, it’s putting me to sleep.
