Just watched the season finale of Barry and… Holy Crap!
No spoilers, but I’m not sure where they go from here for season 4. (According to IMDb, there will be a season 4.)
Just finished Anatomy of a Scandal (Netflix, 6 episodes). Not sure what I think of it. It’s kind of a courtroom drama, but there’s no police procedural, no evidence presented that sways a jury. The big gasp surprise in episode 4 depends on a coincidence that strains credulity. The wow! gotcha! twist at the end also falls apart with a few seconds consideration. But it’s nice to look at and doesn’t require that you think very hard.
The most interesting thing was that apparently in British courtrooms the prosecuting and defense attorneys share a locker room and can chat collegially after the day’s proceedings while taking off their wigs.
Starring Michele Dockery, most familiar as the eldest daughter in Downton Abbey.
Evil season 3 has started. So far, so good.
Finally got around to watching season two of Russian Doll. I’ve been putting it off since all I remembered of season one is that it got a little hard to follow near the end. But I had no problem following this season even though I often find time travel stories not worth the mental effort needed to keep up with them. The real appeal though is the same as the first season, the delightful sangfroid of the lead character as she is confronted with bizarre events.
I started watching the first episode of season two, but realized I’d totally forgotten the premise. Not going to rewatch season one, so I’m out.
I’ve been watching Blood on Acorn. Totally recommend it. Just got done with season 1 and that season finale was riveting. Worth the price of a year’s subscription right there. I won’t spoil the plot in any way, just take a chance on it and try it.
The characters are the same but the premise isn’t. IIRC, season one was a Goundhog’s Day riff. Season two involves time travel and inhabiting the bodies of a parent or grandparent.
Finally slogged to the end of the latest Borgen season. Glad it’s over.
Started watching “Joe Pickett” (Paramount+), based on the novels by C.J. Box. A modern western like “Longmire”, but the protagonist is a game warden who helps solve murders in Wyoming. So far, it’s sticking to the book plots pretty closely.
Have already seen the show since it’s two weeks since your post! But I also remember Leaphorn from the books being on the chunky side. That doesn’t bother me too much.
According to Bill Hader, season 4 is already scripted and ready to go. Love this show.
Didn’t remember the name of it, because we watched it well over six months ago. I like it a lot, too. Keeps you guessing, too, and doesn’t go with the expected.
Binged Pistol on Hulu today. A pretty straight forward biopic series about the Sex Pistols. Mostly focused on Steve Jones (who wrote the book it’s based on) but also some nice insight into the personalities of Malcolm McLaren, Vivienne Westwood, Chrissy Hynde, Johnny Rotten, and Sid Vicious. Apparently, Johnny Rotten disavowed the series, but his character actually comes off looking better than any of the others.
I enjoyed this- even the made up parts of which I understand are quite a lot of it. However, I agree, Johnny Rotten should be happy at his portrayal - it showed him as sympathetic and intelligent with just an unfortunate (or considering the influence of the the Sex Pistols, unique & fortunate) personality. Empathetic also , especially with his dealings with both Sid & Steve. The actor portraying him was very good - it has to be a hard character to play.
Am watching God’s Favorite Idiot. It is…tolerable. It won’t be mistaken for great, or even especially good, but it is mildly interesting. The writing and humor remind maybe a little of the level of Get a Life or Miracle Workers.
Also, just finished Dead End: Paranormal Park. That one is another “eh, it’s okay I guess”.
My husband and I started watching The Old Man on FX. It stars Jeff Bridges as a former CIA officer. We’ve only seen the first episode which was action-packed. It’s hard for us to find something to watch together that we both enjoy. We both really like this so far.
Yeah, the show is definitely more repetitive than the books are; typically the books are centered around real historical events, with Uhtred & his boys playing an unsung, but outsized role in them. (Interestingly enough, Bernard Cornwell actually lampshaded this by introducing Bishop Asser, and having Uhtred piss him off, which explains his absence from the historical record).
It’s still entertaining though- it’s well cast, and well done. I’m still amazed that Eliza Butterworth (Lady Aelswith) is actually only 28, and the same age as Millie Brady (Aethelflaed) who plays her daughter.
Back in April, I watched all 3 seasons of The Witcher on Netflix. I liked that a lot; even though it’s not entirely book-accurate, I feel like it’s a surprisingly good window into to the Continent and the world of Geralt, Yennefer, Dandelion/Jaskier, etc…
I finished up The Last Kingdom a few weeks back, and just finished the first season of Barbarians the other day. It was pretty interesting- it concerns the history surrounding the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD, with Arminius, Varus, Thusnelda, and Segestes as main characters. Probably the most interesting thing is that the Germanic tribes speak German (not entirely historically accurate, but close enough), and the Romans speak actual Latin. So the show’s entirely subtitled.
I’m about to start watching Knightfall, because it looks like something I will like.
I was thinking of giving that one a shot after we’re done with Joe Pickett. I watched part of the first ep and it had a good “grab” for a first episode.
Bf wants me to watch Lost. Says the ending is vague.
Take off and nuke him from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
Lost was the biggest waste of time in any TV series I’ve watched. Nothing really gets explained. Lots of REALLY IMPORTANT things are dropped and my advice is to watch the things which Damon Lindelof did since afterwards which redeemed him a bit for the 100 odd hours wasted on watching Lost.
Watch The Leftovers and Watchmen: mini series. And leave Lost alone.
Or watch the first 3 seasons - which were absolutely riveting - and then, as an exercise in creative writing, write your own ending. It will be better than theirs.
