Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

Our to-do list includes resubscribing to CBS All Access or Paramount Plus or whatever it is this week, for a month or two, to get caught up on all things Star Trek

We watched about twenty series during Covid.

Orphan Black
Timeless
Cobra Kai
The Queen’s Gambit
After Life

These are the ones I liked best.

My wife and I have just started Somebody Somewhere on HBO. It’s a slice-of-life dramedy said in a small town in Kansas (I think?). If it’s about anything, it’s about having dreams, giving up on dreams, and the importance of community. Or something like that. Very unusual for modern TV, the main character is a middle aged woman who is not even in the league of being hollywood-attractive (or hollywood-fit, for that matter).

VERY good, although a bit slow and meandering. (We’re 3 episodes into season 1, the only season so far, although I believe season 2 is being made.)

The second season of Rutherford Falls was a lot stronger than the manic first season, though I have enjoyed both. I recommend it.

I really enjoyed this, especially the “Church Choir” scenes.

Huh, my wife and I both felt precisely the opposite about Rutherford Falls. The first season had a story to tell, and told the story, with charming characters and a very unusual amount of Native American cultural influence as backdrop/support. The second season just seemed aimless. Like they were renewed for season 2 and just had no idea what to do at all, so they threw random things together. The cast and setting were still charming, but really, that’s all that it had. Some charm.

Have started a new Korean series on Netflix, Extraordinary Attorney Woo about a young woman who is a novice attorney on the autism spectrum, so it’s a bit like The Good Doctor but for law instead of medicine, and also a lot quirkier. I’m not sure how to feel about the stereotypical portrayal of autistic people as savants with poor social skills and weird but charming tics as it comes across as a wee bit patronizing, but the main actress is fun to watch nonetheless. Will see where this goes.

We’re almost done with Season 1 of Capitani, a crime drama from Luxembourg. It’s enjoyable.

We’ve finished up with Bordertown, another show with an autistic savant. The first few seasons were quite good. The last one went downhill.

My wife and I loved this. Such a rare show, it manages to be funny and heartfelt and heartrending all at the same time, without tipping into cliche or saccharin-land. Stellar performances all around and I never knew exactly where it was going (which I love).

I can see that. But for me the first season had too much cringe, and this season they set out to make Ed Helms’s character “be better” and he genuinely was, which eliminated the cringe factor. But though the stories were more disjointed, I found that to be justified by the character development.

Thanks for all the recommendations for Somebody Somewhere. We just binged the first season last night and loved it.

Ditto!

We found the Dark Winds finale to be a bit of a mess. Still liked the series overall and looking forward to next season.

I just watched the new Netflix Resident Evil. I finished it in a kind of train wreck fascination, but gawd, it was bad. It’s not that the acting or cinematography was terrible, but the story and plot were. Pretty much everyone had an idiot ball in their pocket, all the time.

Props to the guy who played Wesker, though, he crushed it.

I just binged The Lake on Amazon Prime. I liked it pretty well and will watch season two.

I went looking for something to watch while the kids were over and so I watched quite a few episodes of Blown Away. I don’t know if I’ll go back to it, but I do appreciate the beautiful glass pieces that these contestants make. Really amazing craft.

We just finished Star Trek Strange New Worlds. It was excellent. Best Star Trek show in decades. Highly recommended.

Have you seen It’s OK To Not Be OK? That one I found quite well done in that regard. Autistic person was adorable but also acted out and could be irritating as hell sometimes.

I have not, but the third episode of Extraordinary Attorney Woo went into some detail on the range of people with autism, including those who were severely functionally impaired. So that was something.

I highly recommend it.

We finished The Split (Hulu). All three seasons were outstanding, although the final 30 seconds of the last episode were cheesy. An outstanding look into human nature and behavior.

We’ve started Somebody Somewhere on HBO. Not sure what to make of it quite yet.
