Must admit I struggled on and off until about 6 or 7 episodes in, then it kind of clicked. They’ve rather handily given distinguishing marks to several of the characters’ faces which does help for a few.
I do keep thinking, when a new face pops up though, oooh is that so and so from the future, who has aged 33 years in the past, or whatever. As I said, mind bending!!
Started watching “Welcome to Wrexham” on Hulu… 4 episodes in, and it’s interesting if a bit heavy on Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and lighter on the club stuff than I’d like.
Finished the first season of “The Sandman” about a week and a half ago. Enjoyed it a lot., but I never read the comics so I can’t say how accurate it is.
Finished up season 3 of “The Umbrella Academy” about 3 weeks ago. Enjoyed all 3 seasons a lot. Hoping for big things in the future for Aidan Gallagher; had no idea a Nickelodeon child star would actually have such strong acting chops as a teenager. But he carries the show.
Gave up after one episode of Night Sky about an elderly couple with a portal to another planet in their shed. The premise is intriguing but is only 5% of the episode. The rest is the challenges of aging which are all sad and a little too close to problems we all have in real life, if not ourselves, than with our parents and grandparents. JK Simmons and Sissy Spacek are great but, man, this episode was depressing. I’m not interested in continuing if it’s just more old people problems even if it has a happy Cocoon ending.
I concur. The actor was 15 in S1 and is still only 18, but conveys an insane amount of world-weariness. One can only imagine what he’ll be like when he starts getting proper dramatic roles.
We finished A League of Their Own last night. I would say it’s definitely worth sticking through to the end.
If you’re looking for a faithful reproduction of the film of the same name, this ain’t it. And if you’re uncomfortable with heavy LGBTQ representation, this may not be for you. At times, the baseball premise acts as a Trojan horse for what the show is really about. I think it’s mostly handled well, though it isn’t really my place to say. But it held my interest.
And in the end, it circles back to being a baseball story, with an implausible but fairly stirring finish.
Incidentally, I did a little reading on the AAGPBL. The initial season was essentially a softball league, with a 12-inch ball and underhand pitching. Only in later years did it evolve into something more resembling mens baseball. Neither the film nor the show depicted that accurately.
I read some of the graphic novel but remember pretty much none of it.
In the scene in Hell, I was bemused by the demon who was hanging out with Lucifer. “Mazikeen”. Huh, thinks I, is that some name that is traditionally given as a demonic name?
Then I remembered that the Lucifer TV series (also featuring a demon named Mazikeen) is basically a spinoff of the same Lucifer that Gaiman invented. Duh.
Make sure you catch the surprise 9th (11th? lost count) episode of Sandman. It actually does not require you to have seen the rest of the series.
Just binged Year of the Rabbit, only 6 half hour episodes but it’s pretty fun. Set in 187X London it follows Metropolitan Inspector Rabbit as he solves crimes and uncovers mysteries with his by the books partner, the Chief’s adopted daughter and a surprisingly dapper John Merrick. Very lewd, gross and funny.
It wasn’t worth it. Good story that really didn’t go where you expected. The Simmon/Spacek scenes are really the best thing about it. Its also a good commentary on keeping active when you are older… but the series goes to unexpected places.
I watched it. I kind of liked it. But the Simmons/Spacek scenes are what made it excellent.
We just finished season 4 of What We Do in the Shadows. There were some great episodes and some mediocre ones. Still good watching, but a slight step down from the previous seasons, IMO.
I’m watching “The Good Fight” and I just love it. I have the biggest girl crush on Christine Baranski.
I watched “The Good Wife” years ago, which I also liked alot, and had forgotten about this spin off until I saw that season one is on Amazon through September. Highly recommend.
Looks like it might not stay tame. But MAN is it good. I wasn’t familiar with Domhnall Gleeson but he is outstanding in this role. Steve Carell is as well but he’s always himself.
I remember him from About Time – a fairly limp time travel story – that had a house in Cornwall that I lusted after. Didn’t love the movie, but I looooooved that house.
