In general I haven’t liked this season’s “focus on one character per episode” angle, but I thought the most recent one was interestingly weird.
What’s up with pixelating owl eyes, though? i noticed that in another episode earlier in the season.

In some Native American lore, owls are a harbinger of evil which is why Willie Jack is freaked out every time she sees one. The producers are effectively preventing that evil from entering the homes of their viewers by blurring out the eyes.
It wasn’t our favorite but still thought it was very good- liked the frozen catfish punch line and also we got to find out What happened to Alora’s mom Cookie) . Also- The Deer Lady!
We thought last week’s episode centered on Cheese was especially good. Season 1 has a slight edge but the show is so good overall, no complaints on S2 .
Based on reviews online, etc., we thought we’d give “White Lotus” a try. Big mistake. Just more people treating other people like crap. And I really had no desire to see Steve Zahn’s willie.
Hey, thanks for the review. After the Emmys heaped praise on it, I was going to try to squeeze it into our viewing times; now I won’t bother.
I loved White Lotus. Chefguy, you’re not wrong about people behaving badly, but IMO it goes a lot deeper than that. How far did you get into it?
Only one episode. Nothing about it was compelling or even interesting. If a series can’t show some possibilities in an hour, then I’m not usually willing to invest anymore time in it. Also, I find Jennifer Coolidge to be revolting on every level.
We watched Devil In Ohio. Pretty bad, or maybe just having to watch Emily Deschanel TRY to act for 8 hours put me in a bad mood, my god, she’s AWFUL.
I recently watched on DVD the series Fall of Eagles, a series from the BBC presented in 13 parts, from the 1970’s. It was about the fall of three of the royal houses of Europe (Austria-Hungary, Germany and Russia), covering the period from 1815 to 1918. I enjoyed watching this series quite a bit, and have watched it several times.
My coworker lent (lended?) me the full DVD set for The Office. We are kinda close, and she was very excited when she lended them to me.
I watched the pilot and first two episodes. O.K. Didn’t do much for me. TBH I didn’t care for it.
I am not sure what to do at this point.
In the first episodes, the American version copied the original British series almost identically. After a little while, the the writers made it their own, wrote their own episodes, and it improved a lot. That said, cringe humor isn’t for everyone, and you can just tell your coworker that it wasn’t for you.
Yeah, that’s me. Cringe humor makes me cringe. Never have watched a full episode of either the American or UK version, just a few clips. Enough to know it’s likely not my bag.
Yeah - I liked the show, but it really spoke to the the 12-yr-old inside me. And some of it was too much even for that.
I watched the US version for the first time about 12-18 months ago on Prime. I was ready to give up on it after a few episodes as it just seemed a poor copy of the original and completely pointless. I persisted and was glad that I did; it got much better, although the feel is very different to the original (probably for the good). Only the last series or two (mainly for a particular reason) were poor, the rest were terrific.
Watched several eps of Better Things. A low level actress raising three daughters and dealing with life’s problems. Sounds trite, but it’s reasonably funny. Produced by Louie C.K., which gave me pause.
Pamela Adlon, the co-creator, star and producer, was a close friend of Louie C.K. and had appeared regularly in his own series and they shared a manager. She severed contact with him and their mutual manager (who enabled/covered up C.K.'s bad behavior) after his sexual harassment came to light and got new writers. So he was heavily involved as a director and writer in the first two seasons, not at all in later seasons. I noticed no real drop in quality - it’s a pretty solid show throughout.
It’s semi-autobiographical. Adlon IS a well-known voice-over and character actress - most famously she did the voice of Bobby Hill in King of the Hill (and won an Emmy for it). And she really does have three daughters who were allowed to help cast the actresses that played them on the show.
Doing a little recasting in my head, I think he would have made a good Barry Allen in the Flash movie. I think his acting overcomes any problems people would have with his height.
I made it to 3 or 4 before I gave up. Pretty much the same reasons you state.
We’re going to start this tonight. Looking forward to it, seems like a nice change of pace for us.
Thanks for the info.
I feel incredibly lucky. My partner of 17 years never saw The West Wing. So I get to enjoy it all over again.
Watching the new season of Vera on Britbox, which is entertaining.
