Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

I agree. I read the some of the reviews on IMDb and they were quite favorable. We love all of the Chicago’s including Chicago Fire. This hunk of junk doesn’t hold a candle to it. Very phony. It’s coming off of my DVR scheduled recordings too.

How about East New York? We’ve only seen the first episode and so far it hasn’t grabbed us like Chicago PD. I’ll give it one more episode. I think my husband is in the one and done camp on this one.

I have only watched the first episode of The Midnight Club on Netflix, but I was impressed. The idea that typical scary horror movie stuff isn’t scary much at all to people with real life fear – maybe it has been done before, I don’t know – that idea is interesting to me. I look forward to more.

I have one I’ve given up on. I watched the first season of the comedy Avenue 5 (HBO/Max). I thought the premise was good - a space-faring cruise ship that accidentally gets knocked off course and can’t get back to Earth. It had its moments but nothing really memorable. But I gave the second season a chance. I watched the first episode and it did not elicit even a chuckle. The series has now been deleted from the DVR queue.

There was a second season?!

Just started last week.

For me, even Season One eventually became a trudge to finish. I watched the first episode of Season Two out of mere inertia, but I doubt I’ll watch another episode.

Avenue 5 had such a good cast but never really worked for me. I’ll have a look at Season 2 but my hopes are not high.

Loved Avenue 5 and loving the new season too. No memorable moments? Don’t remember the airlock denial?

What was the importance of the eels in this week’s episode?

I just started this one too. So far so good!

I think they just want to emphasize that eels are the source of all their food (like green soy and lentils) before the “shocking” revel.

Pretty much the only food supply they have, as explained last week.

My wife and me switched from BritBox back to Acorn, so I have one to recommend and one to pass on.

Improbable cozy mystery about a food columnist who gets fired and ends up writing an advice column that she conveniently manages to slip recipes into. Long periods of close ups of ingredients being prepared with a voiceover saying things like eating this cake will make your boyfriend love you. Hard pass.

Prequel to the excellent tv series and movie of the same name. An Aboriginal policeman returns to his hometown to take a detective job. Deals a lot with small town Aboriginal life and problems. The guy that plays the young version of Detective Jay Swan is excellent. He’s almost a carbon copy of the original, same mannerisms, same way of speaking. Really recommend watching all the series, all available on Acorn.

The Old Man (Hulu, 2022) - I am only two episodes into it’s single 7 episode season and so far it’s everything my friends, family and Dopers here said it was. Top class! I agree with the critics that it’s derivative, you’ve seen this show before (of which the most recent is probably Nobody (2021)) but still Bridges and Lithgow are worth the price of admission and the rest of the cast holds their own.

So far there have been a few plot holes which have been fun to riff off of, but for the most part my wife and I are enjoying it and will recommend it to anyone who likes the ‘chased assassin/spy’ genre.

Get back to us after the final ep. My reaction was: that’s it?!

No. It’s been renewed, so you just have to wait for the next season - probably next summer . Like a lot of prestige shows they’ve adopted the British model of fewer episodes, less filler. I think The Old Man just threw people off because it was an odd number of episodes - 7 instead of 6 or 8. But there is no a priori reason 6 or 8 makes more sense than 7.

One I forgot earlier on Paramount+ is So help Me Todd. Lightweight mystery series about a low rent PI who gets his license yanked and ends up working for his mom at a top tier law firm. Lots of funny stuff and some good family interactions. If the guy that plays Todd( Skylar Astin) isn’t Eric McCormack’s long lost son, I’ll eat my hat. I see Mrs. McCormack asking for a DNA test in the future.

That one (So Help Me Todd) is also broadcast on CBS, and to me, it seems really weak.

Yes, it’s lightweight, it’s straight comedy, not a dramady. I don’t really want to spoil anything, but if you are paying attention to the family dynamics, I suspect a surprise is in store for everyone.

The real weak point to me is Marcia Gay Hardin. I think she’s a mediocre actress at best and her comic timing is not great. Skylar Astin more than makes up for it. They may be costars, but he’s carrying the load.
