Shakespeare Mafia -- Act III

Screw up your courage to the sticking place!

Thanks for the support.
It could have been worse - I might have been Yorick.

Mahaloth 1 (glee 10)
Dizzymrslizzy 1 (storyteller0910 34)
DemonTree 2 (storyteller0910 34, Prof.Pepperwinkle 49)
glee 0 (Prof.Pepperwinkle 42-49)

unvote DemonTree

‘Twas but a poke vote.

I actually think I’ve got it, but I will have to wait until tonight to type it all up.

In any game I’ve played, scum win if they get numbers down to even.

I’m probably going to end up voting purely on vibe. I genuinely can see everyone as scum or town more or less equally. It’s just WIFOM across the board for me(WIFOM = wine in front of me, a term for endless cycle of both-sides thought).

I like that! Very relevant.

I think part of what’s putting me into paralysis by analysis mode is the fact that we were all working on absolutely no information in Act I, but our Act II actions were pretty much cut-and-dried, so we have little enough independent data to go on. I may end up going to the random number generator (and if I have a bug in the software, I may end up voting for myself!)

All right. Tell me where I’m wrong.

When I first started playing, everyone’s advice included “Watch for small mistakes.”

I’ve watched, but haven’t found one until nowL

storyteller thought I was female.

So, I corrected him; he said “oops”, and I went on my way.

But today, whilst I was sitting with Madame Pepperwinkle in her Physical Therapy session, it occurred to me to ask myself, “WHY did storyteller think I was female?”

I’ve played in 3 or 4 games with him before. He was Moderator of at least two games I was in.

I am male. The character I use for my Doper name is an old male TV show character.

Most of the players in Mafia games tend to be male. When there’s a correction of gender to be made, it’s most often the other way around.

BUT…

My Character Name in this game is Bianca, lover of Cassio, who was Othello’s best friend. Bianca is female.

Town had a Role Cop in Angel. It is no stretch of the imagination to think the Villains might well have one as well.

If a Villain Role Cop checked me out, they would know I’m Bianca. And Shakespeareanly female.

It’s enough for me to cast a vote:

vote storyteller

which I will change if someone points out fatal flaws in my reasoning, of course.

I have to go re-read that exchange. I was very confused at Prof was a female. Very.

Posts 33 to 35 toDay.

Also, my Avatar’s obviously male.

I mean, is it really a tell. It seems a little out there of a slip.

Many people call me Mr even though I have a literal “Mrs” in my handle.

I’m looking for a reason to vote someone, but I think Story and you both made a Slip on day 1 that indicated you were both Vanilla Town.

Mahaloth 1 (glee 10)
Dizzymrslizzy 1 (storyteller0910 34)
DemonTree 1 (storyteller0910 34, Prof.Pepperwinkle 49-64)
glee 0 (Prof.Pepperwinkle 42-49)
storyteller0910 1 (Prof.Pepperwinkle 68)

24 hours left.

I’d say no. I’ve been playing since 2009 and I still have some folks I have to consciously think about to remember their gender.

I have that old spreadsheet where we all listed our genders. It was for me; I’m the one who needed it.

Anyway, vibe. That is what I have. I’m going Demontree and Glee. I think a scum is either one of them or both of them.

Vote Demontree

Vote glee

Oh, I just realized my one vote is from glee. I’m not doing a revenge vote.

This is the weirdest reason I’ve ever drawn a vote in one of these games

I thought you were female because at some point in the last month, someone with a evidently male avatar who I thought was male for a long time said that they were actually female. I guess I conflated you with whoever that was, which means I’m also going to accidentally misgender them somewhere down the road, but so it goes.

As for me, I’m utterly overwhelmed at work this week. I am going to carve out some time tonight for a better look at everything.

But quick hit re: mass claim - at some point, and I don’t think it’s now but it might be soon - the value of the Vig as a confirmed Townie may supersede his/her value as a Night killer (especially if he or she is a mandatory, rather than an optional, killer). Whoever claims Vig will either be unopposed, and therefore confirmed, or opposed, in which case we’ve uncovered a Villain.

And finally, @Dizzymrslizzy, if you have a reason to believe that not one but two players are Town, I’d urge you to share at this point. Anything we can do to narrow the pool would be VERY useful.

Honestly I don’t have concrete information. I have two crumbs of something that lead me to believe. It’s not concrete in any way, but I’m fairly more comfortable with you @storyteller0910 and @Prof.Pepperwinkle being Vanilla Town at the moment.

Or you either or both are good liars, and I’m completely fooled! LMFAO. That’s the wine I’m drinking today.

I’ve not been feeling well, but I went back through the previous two Days to no very definite conclusion. Both Pardel-Lux and AotN were suspicious of Mahaloth, and I don’t think we should forget that.

Vote Mahaloth

Also, glee hasn’t been doing much, which may just be because he’s a new player, but I feel like I have more reason to be unsuspicious of the others, and he did vote for me, so

Vote glee

I’m a little suspicious of Dizzymrslizzy, since she directed suspicion at BicycleBill, which our vigilante seems to have acted on. But not enough to vote for her at this point.

It’s probably also worth saying at this point that my character name is way down the alphabet, so if you’re marginally more suspicious of someone else, you need to give them more votes than me, not equal.

Town

Dizzymrslizzy

Probable Town

Professor Pepperwinkle

Storyteller

Maybe Pile

DemonTree
glee
Mahaloth
SunUp

I don’t have much reason much vote any of the remaining 4.

Mahaloth was part of the D1 shenanigans, but that doesn’t mean he’s scum. It could have been town on town. It could have been a lucky redirect that started on scum and ended on scum.

I guess that’s the only thing I have is Day 1 Mahaloth’s weird push. (On my phone will grab the quote in a min)

Vote Mahaloth

Hhere’s the quote I was looking fot

Ok, well, I’m sure everyone’s on pins and needles waiting to hear my conclusions and always trenchant commentary…

First, I fired up Python and wrote a quickie script to guess who our villain might be.

Sure enough, it pointed to me the first two times I ran it.

And then I was having lunch with a friend who has rather more experience with this game than I do (though not in the online, text-based format) and I described to him this game and asked his opinion on what a good strategy to identify a villain in the midgame was.

He said “I usually like to look at the people that the fewest other players are pointing at, and I find they are often the villain.”

I told him “I think you just described me.”

Then he said “Are you sure you’re not the villain?”

What a card.

So then I figured that its twice as likely to be an experienced player rather than a newb, since there are only three of us newbies and I know I’m not the villain, my “helpful” friend notwithstanding. But I don’t think that voting by granfalloon will help, despite the probabilistic soundness of that approach, and I’m sure Chronos didn’t exclude newbs from being villains.

And after getting Lady Macbeth-ed by Prof.Pepperwinkle, I do feel a certain amount of pressure to make a choice and quickly. “Is this a dagger I see before me?”

So I went back to the Python script, and after a few changes to make it so that this time it wouldn’t select me, I ran it five times in a loop.

And it got storyteller0910 three times out of five.

As partial justification for this exercise in sheer randomness, I would point out that a mass claim to smoke out the Vig would seem to be folly at the moment, especially if we are 6v1, in which case a slight improvement in our chance to smoke out the villain would be insignificant, as I don’t think there’s any way that the remaining villain will claim Vig - it’s just not a winning move for the villain at this point, but if we leave a mass claim to the next Act, we’ll be on the horns of a dilemma not knowing which claimed Vig to exile. And so with no confidence other than self-justification, I reluctantly

vote storyteller0910

with the knowledge that it may well be the worst move I make all game.
