RGIII was damaged and ineffective. He had Cousins, who has shown he can fill in, on the bench.
Instead, this moron risks the legs of one of the brightest stars to enter the league.
Mike, there is another day. To me this is just plain stupid. You risked this guy for what? It’s nothing like the Minnesota situation where the guy on the bench can’t handle the role.
If RGIII doesn’t fully recover, Shanahan belongs in the eternal Hall of Shame.
Eh, RG3 was gonna need surgery either way. This just makes it a clean tear and they can get started right away instead of trying to rest it for 6 months before operating the way the did with Urlacher last year.
Maybe so. After the first possession of the second half when RGIII showed he didn’t have it they should have loaded him into the ambulance and sent him to the surgical unit for the maximum recovery time. Players often recover from minor surgery. Some don’t recover from major surgery. What if by leaving him in his knee got totally sheredded? Why take that risk for a player of his talent?
I like RGIII. I like Cousins. I hope they both have long successful careers in the NFL no matter who they play for. I do think that Shanahan acted irresponsibly and the final score bears it out.
I was really surprised RGIII walked off the field. Human knees should not bend the way his did on that last play. The guy is obviously a gamer, has tons of heart, but he should not have been in the game after that run early in the 3rd quarter at the very latest. Why risk making the injury worse like that?
Why do you think replacing a LCL is less serious when it’s half torn versus totally torn? I’m not a doctor, but as I understand it they replace the whole thing either way. If it’s a partial they’d probably rest it in hopes it would knit itself back together, but if it failed they’d replace it.
They only way it gets MORE serious is if someone hit him and tore the ACL/MCL/PCL and meniscus with it. But that could happen on any play healthy or not. Dr. James Andrews was there, he cleared him to play today. If there was risk of something career threatening I’m pretty sure he’d have stepped in like he did in week 15.
Look at what happened to AP. I’m sure RG3 will be fine. The worst thing for a knee that I’ve seen is the wait-and-see period. As time goes by and the guy’s not working out the road back keeps getting longer.
Is there some reason he made Grossman inactive? With RG III not at 100 percent, I’d want to make sure I had my 3rd QB active even if it means I’m going to be short some special teams player.
The real issue for me is primarily RGIII’s health, but a close second is his efficacy at QB. After the second TD that put the Skins up 14-0, he was a different (worse) player. He couldn’t plant, the limping scramble to the sideline looked horrible… Washington was in the game until late in the game, so it seems like despite his ineffectiveness, they were still in it. But the fact that he couldn’t even hit his short and intermediate passes (where he’s typically perfect) was an indication that the injury was affecting his play…
I’ve seen suggestions that the field was in disrepair and that it might have contributed to RG3’s injury, not to make excuses for the coach. Anyone else read that?
Or it was the brace that caused his knee to torque when he bent over to pick up the fumble. That brace looked too sturdy. Granted knees don’t bend left or right but they do give, and that brace didn’t allow the give.
Before the game, the announcer said The only reason the field looks green is because of paint". It was on/off showers the night before the game.
It was just plain stupid to leave Griffin in after the 2nd score. He was gimpy before the TD and thought it was a ballsy move to keep him in even for the 2nd TD. I thought he was benched for sure and felt sick when he came out for another series after that.
Cousins is more than capable to hand it off to Morris and Royster down after down and run out the clock.
Griffin did it to himself more than Shanahan. He really thought he was invincible. He even said as much after the game when he said he thought his hobbled self was still the best option, and that he would have gone back on the field if they tried to bench him.
That’s a nine to twelve month recovery time. The 2013 season - ???. Good thing they have Cousins.
And pancakes3, Cousins proved himself capable with a couple of big wins and he can pass (over 300 yards in one of the wins). That is exactly why Shanahan should be banished from coaching. He’s paid to make decisions as to whether a guy is capable of playing. The decision isn’t up to the player insisting on running/limping on to the field. He had a capable backup. You don’t risk a franchise player like that.
If Grossman is inactive and RGIII can’t perform, bench him early and bring Cousins in. Then, if Cousins gets rocked you can pull the fire alarm and put RGIII back in.
This ain’t rocket surgery. If the announcers, me and thousands of others can figure this out why is Shanahan even drawing a salary?
Exactly! That’s their job. If you don’t believe it you haven’t done any coaching. Players almost always overestimate their capability. It’s team game. The coach is responsible for the team, not the whims of an individual. Coaches that don’t grasp that concept shouldn’t be coaching.
Ultimately, the blame falls on Shanahan. He is the damn coach and RGIII is a rookie. I had this conversation with my buddy yesterday. If you have a rookie that says, “Look coach, I’m fine.” It is up to the coach to make the best decision for his player and his future. Most players are so competitive that they will play until they simply can’t anymore; in this new era of football where there is an emphasis on player safety you’d think the coaches would be more aware of their culpabiltiy when it comes to making these kind of decisions.
