I was re-watching Shane last night with the new gf. She’d never watched a full western other than Tombstone. She loved it. It truly is a magnificent peice of work.
However, I have one question. When Starret gets ready to confront Riker, Shane walks out of the family kitchen and towards the barn where his gear is located. Chris, one of Riker’s hired goons comes to Shane to warn him that the cards are stacked against Starret (that is, Wilson is going to gun him down). Shane thanks him for this. Then goes on to kill pretty much everyone.
So my question is this, given that Joe is in the kitchen basically telling his wife that if he is killed Shane will take care of her and Joey, is it possible that Shane is basically thinking of sitting this one out and picking up the pieces thereafter? That is, until Chris comes to see him Shane isn’t going to get involved?
Maybe it was a secene added to increase the ambiguity about Shane as a man.
Any thoughts?
