I am going to be a senior in high school, and i have decided not to date. I was telling
an ex-girlfriend this, who is now a freshman in college, when she asked me why,
I told her that it was because i was tired of silly high school melodrama. She then chastised me (probably taking it
personally) and said that throughout life, i will always deal with the same kind of melodrama, except it has a different name: “college melodrama”, etc…
Anyone besides me find this statement to be a bit sketchy??
Gotta chip in here. I always thought the same thing; kept myself far, far away from such bullshit in high school. “In college,” I thought, “when we’re grown up, it will all end.”
Strangely, it seemed only to get worse in college. “Well, of course; we all still seem so YOUNG,” I thought. “Later, when we’re out in the working world, THEN we’ll all grow up and get our shit together…”
Ain’t happening (I’m a 30-year-old professional type). In fact, I recall, when I was in college and some friend or other was going through some particularly disgusting piece of psychodrama, I called my dad and asked if people ever grow out of this stuff.
He laughed. He’s 60ish and HIS friends are still going through it.
The best you can hope for is to not have much of it. Also to realize how meaningless it is and keep that knowledge even when you’re wrapped up in it. (It’ll happen.)
Hey… ya’ know, Steve, I kinda hafta agree with her and mosta the people who’ve responded. A lotta the older people I know (my Mom’s friends mostly…) are still dealing with the “melodrama’s.” So to me, being the young/naiive person I am, but still I’m smart (kinda, haha) I’m pretty sure they never end…
But as for the dating part… if you feel like you need a break from dating, go for it… you don’t need a reason, really. Other than that you feel like you need a break!
I’ll quote my father in response to me whining about matters of the heart and requesting his advice, it was about ten years ago;
“You’re asking me?¿? Hell boy! I might be over 50 in body, but my heart is still 16… actually as the years go by I understand less and less of it all.”
Meanwhile I’ve figured it out, but I ain’t telling! [sub]I wish…[/sub]
From my experience it was particularily bad in HS…
Got better in college, but unfortunatly ended up dating someone who I found was kinda stuck in the JR High version of dating.
It all depends on the group of people you’re around and your goals in the relationship.
My advice: Keep your goals for the relationship to: I hope they won’t track my movements around the world for 25 years the kill me when I’m at my most inelegent.
