So what is the line that Shodan said that may or may not be racist?

I don’t know of the specific one referred to in this thread, but it’s not like he doesn’t have a history of it. The bolding that follows is mine.

Sotomayor has said out loud what lots of liberals think in secret - that the color of your skin means you are better at this or that - as long as that skin isn’t white. It’s not particularly surprising that a black President would embrace this kind of race-based qualification vetting. What is surprising is that he would have difficulties justifying it with 59 other clowns in the Senate who will vote for anybody he trots out.

Putting it together, let me restate, if I may. I apologize for painting liberals and by extension, you, and others with so broad a brush. The generalization was incorrect. I was frustrated because many liberals do engage in specious racial accusations, and I feel that those that do not do enough to discourage those that do.

I imagine that much of it has to do with the fact that many of us don’t really know enough about you or Shodan or whoever to be able to declare that you’re not a racist. Seriously, you’ve got thousands of posts I’ve never read, and thousands that I’ve long since forgotten. If someone says they’ve noticed a pattern of racism in your posting history, my attitude is to be skeptical, and perhaps try to recall anything that might give me a clue either way. It’s unfortunate that some people are so quick to toss around such accusations, but I don’t really think it’s incumbent on other liberals to defend you from specific attacks unless they know them to be false.

Perhaps there’s a way to raise the caliber of debate above baseless accusations of racism, but I really don’t think starting this thread was any sort of means to that end.

Without being a troll, he can take a thread and throw in some tidbits that can rile, but still be a point of discussion. Sure, I think most of his comments are idiotic, right-wing bile, but it reminds me of lovely dinner conversations with my Republican family.

I disagree. For one thing there are a reasonable number of war-mongering idiots in other lands. For another, I suspect that that there are a still a few yellow dog Democrats left, though they are presumably now few in number.

Not being up on Ancient Greek mythology, I didn’t know from that Scylla. (although I had heard of Charybdis–go figure). So, when I see the word scylla, I think flowers/girl. Guess that makes me sexist…

FWIW, I think “racist” is a loaded term, full of various sliding scales depending on the issue at hand. Regarding Shodan: he can be annoying, but at times he has a point. I may not like the way he expresses his point, but the point remains.

You are probably right. Frankly, I don’t care about large abstract groups, or vaporous notions such as “social justice.” I care about individuals. I distrust people that claim they do care about such things, and distrust their motives. I think most, not all, are false, and cowardly. If one cares so much why not go to Rwanda and fight injustice? There aren’t many Mother Theresa’s or Ghandis, mostly just smug people telling others how to behave.

This, suitably reframed, would make an excellent Great Debate and I personally think you should look into that.

Just for the record, this liberal doesn’t think either you or Shodan are racist, and never has. There ARE a few right-wingers on this board who are obviously racist, or at the least rabidly Eurocentric, but I’ve never considered either of you to be so. And, frankly, the last thing I would ever call conservatives like Airman Doors, WeirdDave, or danceswithcats is racist, as none of them have ever shown, to my knowledge, the first sign of racism. So obviously, not all liberals on this board consider all conservatives on this board to be racist.

I’ve been posting here for ten years. This place is my main experience of liberal thought.

In that time, I’ve learned one truly important thing, and I suppose I owe the liberals of the SDMB some thanks for that. That thing is this:

Liberals are the most racist prejudiced people on the planet. They are obsessed with all this shit to an astounding degree. They hate white people (even and especially if they are themselves white people,) wealthy people (especially when they themselves are wealthy.) They view and think about everything in the context of race or sexual preference , or gender issues. Everything.

Ask Kanye West what Katrina meant.

And… Since they think about everything in terms of race, or sexual preference, or gender issues… if you cross them, or disagree with them, they will react with you on those terms.

Then you are a “racist, a homophobe, racially insensitive, yadda yadda.”

Disagree with Obama in an outburst and Jimmy Carter will call you a racist.

It’s all liberals think about.
