Shoes and gender: a poll

Male. 5.

One pair of winter boots, one pair of fall boots, one pair of semi-dressy shoes, one pair of work boots, one pair of running shoes.

female

20 pairs of shoes

Male, 8

1 pair black cap-toe oxfords (my really dressy shoes, for business formal)
1 pair brown moccasin-toe oxfords (flexible, go with jeans to khakis to suits)
3 pairs of skate shoes (Vans and NSS)
1 pair slip-on Keds knockoffs ($15 at Old Navy, seriously the best cheap shoes I’ve bought)
1 pair Doc Martens 6 hole boots (mainly used for outdoor work - 15 years old and still holding together)
1 pair LL Bean Wicked Good Slippers (seriously the most comfy slippers I’ve ever had)

Female, 19 pairs.

Worn regularly, and stored in my garage:

Birks (probably wear them 350 days/year)
nice® flip flop-type sandals
2 pairs cheap flip flops
sneakers

The rest live in my closet and come out on rare occasions. Some are for specific uses that I have no need for in South Florida. Others are work shoes, and I’m currently a stay at home mom. Still others are dressier than I generally need, on a day to day basis. In rough ascending order of dressiness:

hiking boots
low hiking shoes
snow boots
tall black leather boots
brown loafers
green mary jane flats
gray ballet flats
shiny dark red flats
black mary janes with chunky heels
black kitten heeled sandals
brown “snakeskin” pumps
black patent leather sling back pumps
black beaded satin pumps
gold satin pumps with rhinestones

male, 4

dress shoes
work shoes
everyday shoes
flip flops

Female. I have 4 or 5 pairs that I wear regularly and maybe 2 other pairs that I wear on rare occasions. All flats. And three of the pairs are canvas/sneakers.

Female, 19.5

Dress shoes:
1 pair black pumps
1 pair red pumps (identical to black pair in style)
1 pair bicolor spectator pumps (black patent/gray)
1 pair tan spectator pumps
1 pair “work friendly” blackfrumpy pumps
1 pair gray ankle boots

Casual:
1 pair YELLOW imitation croc thong flip-flops
1 pair Teva strappy sandals
1 pair Merrel strappy “sport/hiking” sandals
2 pairs running shoes
1 pair “bunny ear” style ballet flats
1 pair bronze ballet flats (that should be thrown out)
1 pair beat-up navy chucks
1/2 pair even more beat-up broken heart pattern argyle chucks
1 pair brown “frye” style motorcycle boots
1 pair lace-up Civil War reproduction boots

I just realized that, not only did I forget to mention a shoe or two, I miscounted my shoes:

Additional shoes not listed above:
1 pair t-strap gray heels (good for dancing, has “party stains” from nightclub dance floors)
1 pair jika-tabi
1 pair 5 inch patent leather “goth” stripper boots (got on a trade, rarely wear)

That is not good for your feet or your shoes. You should have at least two pairs of shoes to rotate.

And you really don’t have boots, or sandals, or boat shoes, or bed slippers?

Female. About 50 or 60 pairs, maybe more. I love shoes.

I’m a 52 year old woman, and I own 20 or so pair. I used to own a lot more before I moved to the lower 48 about 8 months ago. And I’m slowly rebuilding my collection.

 As someone else said, my collection decreased substantially as I can’t wear the FM heels I used to adore.

Female

About a dozen because I have to have business shoes for work, athletic shoes for my hobby (they then get downgraded to mowing shoes) winter boots, summer sandals. I am NOT a shoe person but I’ve learned this is what I need.

I am bad about not throwing out my worn out shoes. I keep 'em for backups because, because, umm, I dunno.

Male; 1.

Why is it good for your feet to rotate shoes? And does it count if they’re identical in all but color?

Female, maybe three pairs of the same old leather sandals, plus a few odds and ends.

I’ve never been into clothes much.

Male. Three.

Male. Seven or eight. Three pairs of trail runners, two pairs of “casual sneakers,” two pairs of dress shoes, and one pair of lightweight hiking shoes. There’s a pair of runners that are totally shot, but I keep them in case I need to shovel something objectionable, and one more that probably only have another two hundred miles on them, but they look kind of snazzy and are comfortable enough for around town. Some snow boots, but not good for walking and no use around here.

I am female and I have seven pairs of shoes, only three pairs of which I wear with any regularity.

I have 2 pairs comfortable loafer type shoes or my “work shoes”.

I have 2 pairs of fancy shoes.

I have 1 pair of gym shoes, 1 pair of deck shoes, and 1 pair of sandals.

Female. Not very-very feminine, but I still own too many pairs because I can’t stand painful feet and inevitably just about everything cute hurts after a fairly short time.

That said, I still own about a dozen pairs. Maybe 15, counting the mismatched pairs of sneakers hiding under the bed somewhere.

Male - 3 to 5 if I can find my old sneakers and/or my old dress shoes. Some kind of boots in a box somewhere maybe. I’ll say I definitely know where 3 pairs are.
