Um, killing people the way he did fits my definition of a crazy person. Normal people don’t go on killing sprees.
What’s up with Isla Vista? It’s been in the news lately as a party scene. It sounds like a student ghetto for UCSB. Anyone here have recent experience living there?
I lived there five years ago. It is a student ghetto. You’ll regularly have six, seven people living in a two bedroom apartment, the apartments are run down and expensive as hell, and thefts occur all the time. Oh, and last I heard there’s an incurable strain of gonorrhea floating around, although I don’t know how true that is.
I hated living there.
Is it just me that has the nagging feeling that this sick fuck was a poster here for a brief period of time in the past six months? Him or someone very much like him of similar age with a very similar ax to grind. <shrug>
No. How would he have even have heard of this place?
It has heavy coverage because he killed a bunch of random people and there is video of him talking about it. Not because his father is someone no one heard of in the movie business.
Bullshit. He appeared normal because he was crazy not stupid. When he spoke to the police he knew to not say any of the things he said on video and say all the right things to keep him out of a padded cell. Not because of the levels of misogyny in society. You are just shoehorning your views into the situation.
Yet all too aware that his “superiority” had no effect on the world, while he surely saw some other narcissistic assholes scoring. Must have really ground his gears. But he would have been even beyond help from a regular PUA mentor, since he would have considered it beneath him.
Thing is, I see around me the socially inept and the narcissistic asshole alike getting on with their issues without shooting up the town. His Rant points out that he desired to eliminate attractive socially successful men AND women, even that he wanted to torture the very attractive ones for having “enjoyed pleasure”. That’s wack, man.
Evidently people have established that he was a frequent poster on several sites like bodybuilder.com and some anti-pick up artist Web site. It’s not like we’re that much more remote.
That said, I remember those weird hateful people from a while ago and I think it’s much more likely they are different hateful young men who are angry at women for rejecting them. Thankfully going on murderous rampages is rare, but I don’t think being angry at the opposite sex for scorning you is a rarity.
One of my pet-peeves is that, whenever there’s a murder, the murderer is automatically branded as “crazy” or “mentally ill.” Why can’t they be evil, or simply bad?
A perfectly normal 20 yr old stabbed three people to death. He then proceed, in a normal manner, to drive his car into dozens of others, injuring them. ???
A mentally deranged monster decided to kill as many people as possible using whatever means he had at hand. I’m sure his reasons made sense to him. That makes this mass murderer a mentally deranged monster and lunatic.
Why didn’t his father, family, teachers, and doctors, see that this monster was confined and/or medicated?
The answer to all of these is “he was 22, not 17 or 90.”
This has been explained multiple times in the two threads on this board and in pretty much every news story on the incident.
This mentally deranged monsters life history is still be uncovered. It’s too early for the multiple explanations to actually explain the repeated failures to confine or properly medicate this monster.
22 is not a magic number that explains his life long problem of dealing with other human beings. When the monster was a minor, the parents or the monster’s doctor(s) could have had him involuntarily confined. The monster didn’t make it to old age because he decided to murder as many people as he could with whatever means he had available and then take his own life.
Nobody said it was a magic number.
At 22, you are a legal adult. You are not in the legal care of other adults, and those whose care you were in five years before may not be keeping close tabs on you. Nor is it their responsibility to do so. It may be that when the monster was a minor, he was medicated and confined as you suggest. Or it might be that none of these issues manifested, and there was no reason to do anything.
It would be nice to blame people who are still around to take it, but there’s no logical reason to lay the responsibility at anyone’s door but his own. I’m sure those who knew him would accept some blame for the person he was, but it’s not fair to say they could have prevented this unless you’ve got strong evidence that they knew what he was likely to do and had the power to stop it.
Involuntarily confined for what?
He made a few statements to friends that were a little out there, but most of it was angst for not gettin laid. Almost nothing he said to family would warrant someone being involuntarily confined.
He didn’t appear to be a “monster” until about a month ago.
What do you think they do to people who are involuntarily confined? Pretty much the same stuff they do when they aren’t. They tried to medicate him - he didn’t like the idea of it. He did therapy for years. That’s pretty much it - medication and therapy - unless you go ECT and shit. Are you going to commit your kid to a mental hospital against his will when everything they have to offer (more or less) can be provided on an outpatient basis. Why? On the (literally) one in a million chance he might be a latent spree killer? His parents might have been able to afford it, but you are talking 10s of thousands of dollars (I’m assuming prices similar to inpatient drug treatment).
We want people to feel open about discussing their mental issues - so they can get help.
Once we start involuntarily committing people that haven’t shown any reason to be violent - you aren’t going to get people saying things that often - cause they will be afraid they will be taken off against their will.
Most mentally ill people - on the lines of spree killers and such - are smart enough and still with it enough not to make such disclosures if they would think it would harm them.
I don’t blame anyone but the mentally deranged monster for the murders and injuries that he committed.
However, there were indications that this monster hadn’t been quite right in the head for some time. It’s reported that that he started some type of therapy at age 8. Six police officers were sent to his home for a welfare check only a month ago. (I don’t know if six is the usual number of POs for a “welfare check”?) What had happened in the mean time? I don’t know the answers and all of the information isn’t in (or at least made public) yet.
(post shortened)
This now famous monster had grade school teachers, high school teachers, college professors, and several therapists who, I assume, are trained to identify problems. Did any of them notice a disturbing trend or recognize a potential threat to himself or society? IDK but I’m sure the media will be tracking all of them down hoping for a sound byte or two.
The story is still unfolding.
His misogyny was more than just angst for not getting laid, but still it wasn’t any different from the stuff you see if you read comments on YouTube. That’s why I think the authorities didn’t take his ranting more seriously. By the time he got around to saying he was actually going to attack people, it was too late. Basically, there are a whole lot of guys who talk about women the way Eliot Rodger did. Most of them aren’t going to go on killing sprees, but his earlier videos have to be taken in context. No one took his videos seriously, because they didn’t particularly stand out.
This is worth reading for “why didn’t anyone do anything?”
