Shopping channel snark

I guess over on the Q boards, if you don’t like Alberti–you’re automatically a homophobe.

I like the ring TTV over on Shop HQ. Have no idea if it is a good value. Chuck Clemency cracks me up!

Host Sarah just said a line bracelet was something new and modern, though. I was like “whaaaa?” Line bracelets have been around forever! Maybe she was referring to the cut of the stone; I don’t know.

Haha, the dumb remarks Shawn and Isaac made about the moon being a planet got picked up by a gossip tabloid, Dlisted. [Warning: if you want to follow the link, be aware that Dlisted allows very explicit language.] They have a video (now on YouTube) of the moon-stars-planet exchange. The article and the comments are hilarious.

“And now for an astronomy lesson from Isaac Mizrahi and a QVC host.”

Excerpt from article: "It’s understandable since they [QVC hosts and vendors] always have to keep their mouths moving, but this shit that happened earlier this week is a beautiful train wreck of derp.

“While selling some blouses that look like rags a bunch of Lisa Frank animals got their periods on, Isaac Mizrahi and QVC’s Shawn Killinger got into a debate on whether the moon is a planet or a star or whatever…”

Dlisted helpfully posted a transcription. Shawn was attempting to describe what the print on the shirt looked like:
Shawn: It almost kind of looks like what the earth looks like when you’re a bazillion miles away from the planet moon. The planet moon… From the moon looking back at the earth.

Isaac: From the planet moon…

Shawn: Isn’t the moon a star?

Isaac: (in his Auntie Mame accent) No, the moon is a planet, darling.

Shawn: The sun is a star. Is the moon really a planet? Don’t look at me like that! The sun is a star. Is the sun not a star?

Isaac: I don’t know what the sun is.

Shawn: The sun is a star, isn’t it? (After a producer says something into her ear) The moon is not a planet. I KNEW IT! You were trying to take me down that road.

Isaac: The moon is not a planet! Wait, excuse me, Chunky…

I’m sure Shawn’s in heaven. Her moon/stars blather has gone viral. Last night The Soup featured it - a lot of it, perhaps all, instead of their usual 1.5 second snippet. And later in the show they had a snarkworthy Shawn moment where she was talking about one of her crappy “soul/speaking” joolery pieces, saying something smarmy like “this ring will give you the strength to get through your life troubles.” The Soup’s writers seem to share my opinion of that gagworthy crap.

So Shawn’s a winnah! Famous beyond the Q!

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water – there’s more heavy-handed modding over there. Everybody was snarking about Shawn and Isaac’s episode of Celestial Head Up Ass, and out of the blue comes a mod warning saying they won’t tolerate troll posts. Mysteriously, they said they weren’t focusing on anything in particular. Oh, really? They pop in the middle of a Shawnie Sue snarkfest and say it’s nothing specific?

So are people only allowed to make some small quota of snark posts when a host does something outrageously stupid on air, so glaringly stupid that it gets picked up by major media outlets? Or do they want no snarking at all? They thanked everybody for the “community spirit.” What spirit is that? They just want nicey-nice posts about how good some host looks with her new hairstyle? If that’s the way they’re going to mod, people might as well just go back to the official QVC Community forums.

For that matter, I did not see any poster acting like a troll, and I check that shopping channel thread every day. Thank goodness for this Straight Dope thread, where we could say “Shawn is a dumbass!” fifty times a day if we wanted to!

Coffeecup, I do agree that the mods on that forum are OTT, but in that case I thought they were referring to the “Bob” character who went gaga over Kiersten and then some other posters engaged him. I thought Bob was the troll, and the mods were saying to either ignore or report him.

But – I may be totally wrong!

I would post here more often if there were more activity. Sometimes I feel lonely here.

Phil Plait aka The Bad Astronomer (and a regular poster here back in the day) weighs in on the snafu. He’s actually sympathetic:

QVC is an online shopping channel. Recently, host Shawn Killinger was featuring a line of cardigans by designer Isaac Mizrahi. She described the pattern on one: “it almost kind of looks like what the Earth looks like when you’re a bazillion miles away from the planet moon.”

To her credit she laughs at herself and says she just meant to say “looking back at the planet from the Moon”, not “planet moon”. But then the conversation takes an odd turn. …

And one final thought. A lot of folks online are making fun of the Killinger and Mizrahi for their discussion, but I think it’s fine. First of all, they’re curious about astronomy, and it led to getting an answer (even if I might quibble over how it happened). Second, it started a larger conversation about what all this means.

And third, what they were arguing over is a subtle, layered, and difficult concept that had astronomers from all over the Earth arguing for years about what it means. And they’re still arguing over it!

FTR, the earth is a planet, the sun is a star and the moon is a satellite. But there are plenty of borderline cases to puzzle over and semantics are ultimately less interesting than science.

That is really cool Measure for Measure. Thank you for posting that. I really wish he still posted here regularly. :frowning:

I caught those posts by Bob because I’m subscribed to the thread and get email notifications. He was trolling in a nasty perverted way. I hope they banned him after the 2nd time.

I haven’t been watching the Q or HSN so my posts in the shopping channel threads at either place have been scarce. I’ve been venturing around here a bit though and even started a thread.

Watching Wendy on JTV and about to gag at her talking about her religion again. She was selling a diamond ring with a sideways cross. She said something like “The symbolism of the sideways cross is that the cross was laid down when Christ rose from the dead… He died for our sins… Show your faith when you wear this ring…” Then she tried to sidestep it, but promptly jumped right back in: “I’m not trying to push my faith on you, but… go to my Facebook page JTV/Wendy and if you request it I’ll send you the story of Christ laying down the cross…”

This is getting to be so irritating that I don’t even want to watch her shows or her sister Heidi’s shows, since Heidi always gives religious lectures too. I’m a Christian myself, but I don’t want to see any shopping channel hosts pushing Christianity. Nor any other religion! Shopping channels are not the place for that.

Do these self-righteous sisters ever think about the JTV customers who are not Christians? I’m sure JTV has Jewish viewers, viewers of other religious backgrounds, and viewers who are atheists or simply agnostic. Do the sisters think those viewers are heathen or something?

As for Facebook, Wendy and Heidi should just have personal Facebook pages where they can discuss the Christian religion with friends all they want, and keep it off the JTV official pages.

I haven’t complained to JTV yet, but I’m seriously considering it. I’m not on Facebook so I can’t complain there. But every time you order from the website, JTV has an option for you to rate the channel, and when you do that, there is an open box for comments at the end of the survey. I’ve used it before to comment about their wide jewelry selection, thank them for starting to use Stretch Pay, stuff like that.

By the way, I think Wendy may be all wet anyway when she claims the sideways cross symbolizes the laying down of the cross after the Resurrection. Actually, there is a controversy over whether the inverted and sideways crosses in jewelry are satanic images. Here’s an article about it:

Times Free Press, June 13, 2014, “Bling or blasphemy? Upside down and sideways crosses showing up in fashion.”
Some people think it’s satanic, some think it’s merely offensive, some don’t care, and others think it’s just another fashion trend where jewelry designers are trying to do something different with the cross. My opinion: it’s just the jewelry designers messing around with the cross image, without any religious or anti-religious motivations.

Okay, I did it – complained about Wendy and Heidi to JTV. I had to review a recent purchase anyway, so when I got to the part with the optional survey I made my complaint. You can rate JTV 1 to 10 as to whether you would recommend it, and then there’s the box for comments. I rated them 10 and said it was because of their wide selection and good prices. Then I said I would not recommend that people watch shows hosted by Wendy or Heidi because they were proselytizing about Christianity. I pointed out that JTV was not a televangelism station. I said some other things similar to what I wrote in my post above.

I doubt JTV will pay any attention to my complaint, since they seem content to let Wendy and Heidi preach on air, but I feel better now that I communicated my opinion to them.

I would be upset too, Coffeecup. Perhaps in the South, this is more accepted? (I am showing my stereotype, I guess!)

The whole idea of the sideways cross has always bothered me. QVC has offered some bracelets like that too.

Hi All–

Been reading your posts on the other thread, but I got booted a long time ago…never quite figured out what I did wrong! I promise to be good. Glad to see so many familiar names here.

Happy AM all. I have been reading your posts on two other sites for a year or so. Never posted, but panicked when all the familiar names that do post and make my lurking so enjoyable disappeared.
I am so pleased to have found you again.

Welcome! You can say pretty much whatever you like here, without fear of being scolded.

It’s so good to see new people posting. I hope you enjoy your stay here.

He has indeed been banned over there. He was really creepy.

Honey, thanks for the link to this site. It’s nice to see so many posters from the “other” place.

Hello everyone–I’m One More Time from over there…boy, is it getting boring and so very PC I’m afraid to type ANYTHING. Thanx to Honey for the link.

Welcome to the new folks! I am Thumper over there – had to change my name here. Glad to see more of us crossing over!
