Short Hair or Long on the Dudes? -- or, I just can't do a thing with my hair!

Another big thanks to everyone, never expected this thread to reach two pages! Lots of great opinions

They don’t mind at all. Half the teachers at my school don’t even show up in dress clothing for work (unless they expect parents to be there). We’re pretty relaxed and groovy here in Itoigawa. And I would never dye my hair black. I absolutely love my hair color and wouldn’t change it for anything.

Whether the sharif likes it or not.

Ohhhhhh no. Indecisive as I am, don’t you bring a third option into this mess!

Bolding added. It’s not intrinsically feminine, it’s considered feminine by us because our culture says it is (all men in 17th century Holland had shoulder length hair, they didn’t consider it feminine). My point was that I’m not that tied to fixed gender roles or traits so if a man wants to have long hair (or a woman short hair) I don’t feel like there’s anything wrong with that as long as it suits them.

And…bolding added. I’m not exactly alone in my assessment. Not looking to fight, just sayin’. I’ll concede that there’s nothing intrinsically wrong with short-haired women or long-haired men, but I can’t help but make aesthetic judgments.

Some women with particularly beautiful facial features look quite striking with short hair, but a small part of me still thinks they would look better with their faces framed by soft, feminine, cascading waves of hair.

OTOH, long hair doesn’t flatter any guy, ever. As others have mentioned, long hair = high maintenance = feminine. Give me a butch, no-nonsense, short-haired guy every time.

One of my favorite lines of comic book dialogue ever was uttered by the Huntress, as written by Gail Simone. She’s in combat with Savant, a villain with long hair. Quoted from memory, she says “Fair warning, Rapunzel - I win this fight, I’m shaving you bald. We like our dirtbags a little less precious around here.”

On further analysis of my own attitude, I think I’ve struck upon the crux of it: there’s just something self-consciously peacock-y about a guy with long hair, as if he’s saying “Look at me! Look how fabulous my hair is!”

Give me a guy who is what he is, and (ideally) unaware of his own attractiveness. He doesn’t even have to be clasically handsome. I’ll take an average-looking guy with short hair over a long-haired guy with model-like features any day. Hair beyond the top of the ears or nape of the neck is an absolute deal-breaker.

Now, don’t get me started on tattoos…

You are super cute! I will not stand for denials of your cuteness, sir!

Well, I’m in Japan, which is definitely not London or Nova, so I can get away with it socioculturally.

And, FWIW, I don’t maintain my hair. It doesn’t even get conditioner. I step out of the shower, run my fingers through it to get out any knots, and I’m out the door.

Well, no, that’s a lie. I put clothes on first. Regardless, I don’t buy the idea that long hair = high maintenance. Hell, I don’t even own a comb (I don’t think I ever have).

Yet, somehow, if I allow my hair to grow out, I become an ostentatious, self-flattering, “precious” fem? That’s kinda harsh. Guess I better work on my sashay, then.

Heh…of course I know that long hair does not necessarily mean high-maintenance or vanity in objective reality. I can only speak of my own deeply-ingrained preferences.

I don’t want to overstate my attitude. When I see a guy with long hair, it’s not like I spit in his face or run screaming for the hills. To the extent that I think about it at all (which is not much), I only think that I wouldn’t date him (or sleep with him).

Also, my brother had long hair, which might partially account for my sexual aversion to it.

Damn. Well, there go MY plans for the weekend.

ETA: I’ve never seen Autolycus, but if his profile says nerdy-cute, then that’s good enough for me.

No need for snark.:frowning: Did you want input or didn’t you?

Obviously, I’m not the OP, but I didn’t read that as snark, just a joke.

This.

IMO, there is no guy with long hair who would not look better with short. I even consider seodoa’s “short” cut to be on the longer side of what men should wear.

That said, he has the boyish good looks to pull off a shaggy cut.

Still, for whatever the opinion of a 24-year-old gay guy is worth, I find long hair on men extremely off-putting.

Oh, dear, that wasn’t meant to be snarky. That was supposed to have a winky face and kiss!

Mea maxima culpa! :frowning:

I’m not snarky! I love the input, good, bad, AND sexy!

ETA: So the ladies, cougars and otherwise, like the long hair, but it seems that several in my target demographic have strong opinions to the contrary! What a predicament!

I’m a prejudiced bitch and came in here fully planning to order you to cut it. Then I saw the pics. The longer hair looks totally cute. Just don’t let it grow much longer or you’ll end up looking like Celine Dion’s feral child.

Oh, don’t worry, Cat Fight, I don’t know if I could handle it much longer than this.

Okay, we can be friends. Guess I was a little sensitive. I hate getting involved in fights on the Dope and I’m always reluctant to post anything that deviates from the majority opinion in a given thread, because that can get you piled-on around here. I read your comment through that filter.

I’ve tried to be diplomatic in stating my position, and hope I’ve succeeded.

Here’s another “Wasn’t going to post, but upon reading some later posts, I’ve reconsidered.” (How you doin’? ;))

My bias: short hair is always better. That being said, I think you could pull off both. The key here I think is to keep it trimmed, so it has some semblance of being neat and groomed. I definitely like the picture with the shorter hair, and I’d even suggest it a tad shorter than the one in that picture.

Unfortunately, my trans-oceanic supersonic transport is in the shop at the moment, so we can’t, uh, have a “personal haircut consulting session”.

Yeah, I’m not a huge fan of the mob mentality that seems to thrive on the Dope (and the rest of the world in general), but you at least have a few supporters in the long hair looks girly camp!

I will admit that long hair does look really feminine on some guys, but I don’t really see myself as coming off fem in any of my pictures with this hair. Of course, I’m far from biased on the subject, which is exactly why I made this thread.

I’m far from thin-skinned, so I welcome any other “Ew, long hair, no” replies as well as the “Ooo, long hair, rawr” ones. “Meh, dunno don’t care” comments are okay, too, but, of course, less than helpful.

And Taenia spp., I definitely am going to keep it trimmed and (somewhat) groomed whether I wear it long or short. The only reason I haven’t been to a stylist in months is that I’ve recently moved and my previously trusted goto guy for my hair is not an option anymore. I hate picking out new salons (I’ve had some frightening experiences) so I really dragged my feet about this whole thing.

My (gently used) Concorde is also in the shop, so I guess we’ll have to postpone any “consultation.”

Growing up I had pretty long hair. Quite a few inches lower than the shoulders… Not only that, I’m thin.

While playing in a basketball game for my teams championship in 7th grade… “Oh wow, I thought you were a girl this whole time” This came from a women in her 40’s.

Cut the hair almost immediately. I now live with my hair between 2-4 inches and enjoy it. Much less hassle trying it off and I don’t have to BRUSH it and all that jazz…

Personally, I think you should keep it short. Maybe make it a bit more messy for some texture (you don’t seem happy with it). Look at some Japanese hairstyles.

Honey, you will be hot no matter what you do!

I’m basically an old-school punk, and while I tend to really go for long-haired guys, I have known lots of guys who were drop-dead sexy with short hair. It’s individual.

You have the luxury of looking great either way.

The longer hair maybe makes you look a tiny bit younger.

You are a seriously good looking person, long hair or short. You can definitely work any length of hair, as long as it isn’t greasy. Rowr! Or however you spell that. I don’t care if I am old enough to be your slightly older, hip sister, I know what I like!
