There seems to be more than a few Latin phrases that, in common English usage, seem to be shortened a bit. For example, “semper fi” instead of “semper fidelis,” and “president pro tem” instead of “president pro tempore.”
Does the shortening of these Latin words/phrases actually have a basis in Latin, or are these phrases inventions made by English speakers?
