Unfortunately my boss is away on vacation this week so we are down one manager. I have Strep Throat and Pinkeye. I work in a restaurant and I’m the opener tomorrow. I feel like ass, but there is no one to cover the shift. What should I do?
Pinkeye?! I thought you weren’t allowed to go with that? Don’t go, I’d be pissed as nails if I caught either of those two from you, and I do believe they’re highly contagious.
Hey, you live in Redwood City, too!
Which restaurant are you working at? Just so I could . . . uhh . . . come by and say hi! In a week to ten days.
I have to agree; strep infections are contagious, pinkeye may or may not be (depends on the cause). It’s questionable whether you should be handling food with these conditions. And if you work out front, no offense, but mightn’t you scare the customers?
Ugh. Do you really have to ask?
Please, please, please, keep your cooties at home.
Sorry, should have said “I have to agree with Anaamika.”
I would be highly pissed if I went to a restaurant and one of the employees had as contagious illness. I would be far less pissed if it were closed and there was a sign on the door that said, “Sorry, we’re closed; key employee has pinkeye.”
Well, maybe “closed due to emergency” would be a better sign. And be sure it says when you’ll be open again.
Perhaps I should mention that I’ve been on antibiotics for both for 2 days now. My dr. assures me that I am no longer contagious.
are you sure it’s Pinkeye, you don’t happen to have a craving for sweet, sweet BRAAAIIINNSSS! do you?, any bottles of worstershire sauce around you?
(oh, c’mon, someone had to make that reference at some point, right? )
seriously though, hope you feel better, and no, don’t go into work, that’s what sick days are for, when you’re legitamitely sick, and you qualify…
If you were working for me, I would refuse to allow you in my kitchen. When I was a cook, I never let sick employees work. Busting my ass is preferable to having pathogens in the food.
Thank you all for agreeing with me. DLG is a big wimp and hates to call in sick. BUT SWEET FREAKIN’ JESUS ON A POGO STICK he has strep + pink eye and likely mono as well! Is that the manager you’d like to have at your midpriced casual fun dining experience?
Personally, if I went to a restaurant and discovered MANAGEMENT had those things (and believe me, the pink eye is obvious), I’d be at the LEAST writing a note to corporate, possibly dropping a dime to the health dept.
So thank you all for agreeing with me.
And no, the doc never said he wasn’t contagious. Mono is contagious until after the fever is gone for 24 hrs. As of this morning DLG still had a 101 fever. Pink eye is always contagious and scares the beegezus out of anyone who has worked with kids (spreads like fire).
Duct tape him to the couch.
Or something…
He’ll get better faster, if he stays home as well, Inkleberry.
Better they’re short-staffed for a couple of days rather than have you at half-power for a week, for example. Never mind it’s uber-contagious and you could also spread it to your fellow employees, DrLG. So really, it’s your duty to stay home, and they should give you a manager of the year award!
Viral pinkeye is very contagious. Bacterial pinkeye is not, as far as I know. On the other hand, it’s extremely simple not to hand it off to anyone - do NOT touch your eye, and don’t let your eye touch anything. If you do that, it’s not going anywhere. I never stopped working when I had pinkeye, although I certainly didn’t work in foodservice.
IANAD, but one would imagine it’s BACTERIAL pink eye when the doc writes a script for ANTIBIOTIC ointment. Plus, uh, oral pennicillan, plus codeine, etc etc etc. Oh, and wants a full panel of blood tests because “something isn’t right here.”
Seriously, we have the plague. Except Tinkleberry, who for once is oddly healthy. I suspect he got a lifetime of sickness out of the way in the first 6 months. Good for him.

All I’m sayin’ is, pinkeye doesn’t have to keep you away.
The plague does, though. I really doubt I’d go to work with a fever and on codeine.
Ok, so we can get this straight. I’ve been on antibiotics since early yesterday afternoon for both pinkeye and strep. I’m seriously doubting the mono thing because I’m feeling infinately better already. The Dr, quack that he might be otherwise (ask inkleberry later), assured me that if I had strep and pinkeye and took the meds he prescribed as prescribed, I would not be contagious by Thursday morning. My biggest concern is the giant red eye of doom I’m sporting right now. Maybe I will just go buy an eyepatch and be the pirate manager. Also, I don’t really ever handle food anymore. I just sort of look at it. And I know that I greatly reduce my contagiousness by washing my hands and keeping my fingers out of my eye. So while there was much blood taken from me this morning, I believe that the original diagnosis of strep was right. And I have taken all my meds so far, right on schedule.
Then why even ask? You know better. You’re being the same myopic, stubborn, and short-sighted ass you tend to be, “Oh I can’t call in sick… My daddy never called in sick. Nobody can do the job but me. Blah blah blah.”
And it’s crap.
Face it, your job is PR, primarily. You are selling a product based on it’s marketability as fresh, healthful, and clean, as well as a lifestyle product (fun, exciting, friendship, etc). A Manager with PINK EYE does not promote these values, it undermines them.
You KNOW better. You are having an axiety attack. You ALWAYS have them when you need to call in sick. This is why you very stupidly took no time off when the baby was born. Take an ativan and buck up to the plate, little camper. Your eye is just gross.
I don’t mean to intrude here, but are you, uh, posting to yourself?
