I’ve watched all of the UK Being Human, and I’m trying to decide if I should bother with the US version. I turn, naturally, to the Dopers.
So first, my impression of the UK version: I liked it OK, but didn’t love it. I thought the mix of humor and drama was generally awkward, and the transitions between them often jarring. It had moments of brilliance - usually at the end of a series finale - but it felt like it took a lot of slogging through to get to them. The third series was probably the best in my opinion, largely because they cut down on the comedy and made it more cohesive.
The reviews of the US version I’ve seen have been encouraging. What do the people who have seen both think? Will I be watching the same thing in a different accent? Do the changes make it better? What say ye all?
P.S.: I would also not mind particularly if the naked man-ass quotient dropped a little.
The U.S. version has dialed down the comedic aspects quite a bit, which I think you’d approve of. They’ve cast their lot as a supernatural drama.
I like the US version quite a bit more, but maybe that’s because I’m an American and am more used to series having 13ish episodes and events coming at a slower pace. I’m up to date on the US one, and only half way through the first season on the BBC one. You get more backstory and character development in the US one. The BBC ghost (Annie?) confuses me. She could be seen and talked to the pizza guy in the first episode, but then her ex-fiance could not see her, nor could the neighborhood people. The werewolf outsider could even touch her, grab her arm and nearly molest her, which is a bit odd. And she’s always making tea. The US girl ghost seems a bit more consistent with ghostiness.
I’ve watched the first three episodes, and so far I’m not impressed because they’re basically the same thing as the UK episodes from the first series. Does it get less derivative as the season progresses, or is it more “reimagining” of the UK series? If it’s the latter, I really don’t understand the point given people in the US are capable of understanding Brits speaking and can simply watch the original show.
