However, I would also surmise that men make the large majority of medical, emergency or national defense related occupations without which the nation might really suffer. I believe that the large majority of firefighters, paramedics, surgeons, police officers, air traffic controllers, airline pilots, nuclear-reactor operators, 911 dispatchers, military personnel, for instance, are male. Take those away and we are looking at potentially a The Purge level national crisis.
Any substantial portion of the population disappearing would lead to an economic disaster, whether it’s men, women, immigrants, or Harry Potter fans.
Currently, men are disproportionately represented in hard, dirty and dangerous jobs, or jobs that build or maintain infrastructure or the flow of goods. For example, construction of all stripes, electrical line installation, trucking, sanitation, logging, mining, metal working, oil rig worker, commercial fishing, police, fire and rescue, military, dock workers, environmental clean up, and so on.
Historically, women performed a fair amount of hard or dangerous labor, such as stoop agriculture or factory work (back before OSHA was a thing). There are places in Africa where women walk for hours through sweltering heat to fetch water for their family. When large amounts of men go off to war the women have to fill the void. So it’s not as if they can’t do these jobs, if they were required to do so. There would be a difficult transition, as the low number of female participants in the above industries would have to train new women in large numbers.
Velocity What if we look at this way and agree to move on: men are more highly represented in some fields (military, construction, firefighters), women are more highly represented in others (education), both are present in medicine, business, law, service industries, etc and society is fucked without both of them.
