Should we bring back photo assignments?

Last week I did a time-lapse project, and it got me to thinking…a long while ago, I think all the way back in 2006, for several months people came up with photo assignments - photography tasks for all those who wished to participate.

For example, one might have been asked to take photos of:

Blue - take a photo of something blue
Stone - take a photo of something made of stone
Cold - …

and everyone would take the required photos, upload them to their picture account and link to them so we could admire them.

It was fun, but we stopped.

Should we start again? If there’s interest, I’d volunteer to provide an assignment for April, and maybe others could claim months too.

Well?

…I’m in. I’m closing in on the end of my 365 Project, I could use some inspiration in closing out those final few days!

Oh, I would do it. Photography (even with my little point and shoot) is my new hobby.

I would love to do this. I’m trying to inspire myself to shoot more and I suspect this would really help.

I’m in.

Okay! Looks like I’ll have to come up with April’s assigment to be posted this weekend. Anyone want to claim May?

I don’t want to pick a topic, necessarily, but I’ll definitely play along.

Is there going to be a central account for us to post to, or do we all post to our own accounts?

Your own. I can’t think of any photo sites that’d be happy about a communal account. I suggest photobucket. It’s free and has a generous upload limit.

Ooh, great idea. I don’t have a photobucket account but I assume they’re easy to set up and use? I’m accustomed to Flickr.

It is easy to set up and use, but if you already have a flickr account there’s no good reason to change to something else. You just need some way to link to photos to participate.

Count me in. I’ll come up with a May assignment, too! Are we going to aim for one word type assignments? I mean, not that I want to write a paragraph, but is that a goal, or happenstance?

Ooh! I just thought of a good subject/theme – put me on the list.

As long as it’s broad enough that people can take an array of photos, I don’t think that it needs to be a single word. You could go with things like “fuzzy animal(s)” or “kids playing outside” and still give people a pretty wide bearth.

Sounds like fun. I’m in.

I’d like to play too.

Is there an old thread we can look at?

I like the idea, and would be happy to give it a try.

I’ve never used it, but Photobucket has a group album feature. There’s a similar option in Picasa too, I think.

Here’s an old thread as an example.
I checked and most links still work.

Definitely!

I agree on general principle. And also more specifically I now have an ipod touch with easy access to various photo publishing areas.

Photobucket seems a little obscure. I think a Flickr group is easiest.

Engage!

I use both Flickr and Picasa.

I’m going to be traveling starting tomorrow, so wouldn’t be able to do anything until I’m home middle of next week.
