Siam sam, I want to stomp your pigeon eggs!!

'Cause that’s not how things are done here on the SHAKES Dope Message Board.

Check the dates - it’s been going on for over a year, not a month and a half.

And I’m one of the ones who’s been enjoying hearing about pigeon lifecycles. Don’t like it? don’t read it.

This is the second thread (to my knowledge) pitting Siam Sam for various reasons. I think the last one was pitting him for daring to update us with news from Thailand (and pretty interesting news, usually, at that).

Which is what I don’t understand. Siam Sam is very, VERY low on any list of “posters who annoy” that I would draw up. There are far more annoying posters who post almost as prolifically on here, and I don’t see them being pitted even once, sometimes.

Not that I care about them being pitted. If I did, I’d be the one pitting them. But the point, to me, is that I’m baffled at Siam Sam being singled out for a pitting at all, let alone two.

The more things change, the more they stay the same, I see.

Another “Don’t you dare touch the Pigeon thread” poster.

The thread is a classic multigenerational classic soap opera, with sibling rivalries and death and sex (with pictures, yet!) and infidelity and hints of incest and a noble father and a flighty (heh) mother and…

If this pitting makes Siam Sam discontinue the thread I’ll…I’ll…well, I don’t know what. But something slow and pain and evil to you.

I love the pigeon thread! It’s like those nature shows I used to watch growing up.

Well, I’d been ignoring the pigeon eggs thread, but if it’s got all that, I’ll have to go check it ou!

Yet another vote for the pigeon thread! I love it. If you don’t, ignore it!

Seriously, Big Pidgee and Little Pidgee have a designated sex area. I kid you not!

Not coincidentally, the OP of that thread also wound up looking like a dick. I’ve never read the pigeon thread, but both Pittings came off as picking on the guy for “being different,” not because the OPs had anything resembling a real grievance.

See, I never even noticed the pigeon thread. Or maybe I did and I thought, “Ew, pigeons!” But now I’m interested. Somehow, I don’t think that was the goal of this pitting.

Which is one aspect of the thing that I don’t understand, since Siam Sam, while full of entertaining stories about his expat life, doesn’t seem very weird to me, really. Maybe I’m just that much weirder that he seems pretty normal, other than venue.

I mean, I think of Siam Sam and I think: “Nice guy, married, lives in Thailand, tells funny/interesting/macabre stories about Thailand…oh, yeah, and the balcony pigeons”. Not really a bit of personal weirdness in there…if the stories had been about cardinals or sparrows or robins nobody would even have done a double-take.

I guess there’s no accounting for what’s going to crank up a random Doper’s irritation.

I think the pigeon eggs thread is good and should stay as long as there’s interest.

I have for various undefined reasons never opened that thread. No explanation for my pigheadedness. It just is.

I am an animal lover but I’m not a pigeon fan and never had any interest in the thread, despite being curious why a thread about pigeons could be so long-lived.

I think this is right, and that it can be said of any and every thread. It’s why i have, in the past, got annoyed with moderators who close threads because “It’s run it’s course,” or “It’s outlived its usefulness” or" “I’m putting this out of its misery” or whatever.

If people are still responding to a thread, then by definition it is a thread worth keeping open. That is, after all, a thread’s only purpose—to be opened, read, and responded to.

Same here. Any time I see a multipage thread that doesn’t have the “yes, you’ve clicked on this before” color, my eyes skip right over it, because I can’t be bothered to read that much to catch up.

The problem the OP is having is that the only interest in the thread seems to be from Sam himself, with about half the total posts in the thread going to Sam.

It would be like me continually bumping my music threads every few weeks with a new song to be depressed with or to jam to.

I would try to rival the pigeon thread’s longetivity with my music threads, but my taste in music is admittedly narrow and I just don’t know if I could come up with new songs to jam to. :frowning:

I hadn’t opened it before, but thanks to this thread, I did!

You can’t gauge interest in a thread simply by counting how many unique posters are active in it. The pigeon thread has 585 posts. But it has 11, 731 views. I find it hard to believe that Siam Sam is responsible for a majority of those page views.

The thread isn’t really one that lends itself to commentary. But it’s obvious that there are a decent number of people following along with the avian saga.
