You’re making MPSIMS look like an Asian newspaper, dude. There are currently seven of your threads on the front page of that subforum. And somehow you’ve managed to start over twice as many threads (299) in a year-and-a-half as I have in eight-and-a-half years!
Often people who start with a flurry of posts and threads begin to cut back after a year or two, so I was hoping we’d see that with you, but instead we seem to be getting the opposite; you’ve managed to crank out an astounding forty-three threads in this month alone!
Granted, the threads are sometimes interesting, but really, it’s the same subject, over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
I’m not asking you to stop entirely, but damn! Perhaps you could be a little more selective in what news stories you post, or maybe consolidating multiple stories into one thread. MPSIMS is high traffic enough without seven threads at a time from a single poster taking up front page real estate.
I’m of mixed feelings. On the one hand, I love the vast majority of sam’s OPs. On the other hand, I get a slight irrational irk out of seeing so many new threads, all by the same person, all about the same general topic.
In all honesty, I pondered writing a similar pitting but was too chicken to go through with it. TTFWIW (honestly not much).
Hahaha, the funny thing is, I was thinking this exact thing about an hour ago, and almost wrote an OP about it to the effect of this one, but decided it was a little too rude and pointless especially towards a guy who I like, so I didn’t bother. But now I’m glad someone brought it up.
He’s a good guy. But I don’t think there are enough people on this forum from or in Southeast Asia for so many of the news stories to warrant posting.
I have admittedly thought the same, but obviously didn’t feel strongly enough about it to say anything. But now that it’s come up - yes, it would be nice if it were “dialed back a notch.” (Admittedly, most posters have at least one topic they can’t shut up about, including me, but most of us don’t start whole threads about it; we keep it confined to our posts. )
I agree that it would be nice to dial it back a little.
I agree with the other posters who say they have mixed feelings, as I’ve participated in some of his threads, but I’ve also agreed with other pittings of other one-track posters, asking them to refrain from starting multiple treads one the same topic.
I’m on the other side of the fence here. I like reading his threads. Through them I have learned a lot about places and cultures that I probably never get to visit in person.
So with Scrambledeggs suspended we need someone else to bully around? Come on, I’d say ~150 threads in 8.5 years is contributing too little sooner than that ~300 threads in 1.5 years is too much. Plus, as was said above, Sam’s threads are generally interesting and fun reads about a place I’ve never been to and have no plans in the foreseeable future to go to, and about which Sam has been known to offer some insightful remarks.
I rather have too many threads than a dwindling participation in the boards, if you don´t like them don´t open them; easy, simple and non confrontational.
Hey, cut him some slack… we need thread-starters. There were hardly any threads started just last weekend, for example.
More seriously, the board is currently in an era where someone starting too many threads is hardly a problem. I consider scrambledeggs to be the exception that proves the rule.
I’d hate to be on the receiving end of a pitting like this, even with its caveats and mild tone. It boils down to being scolding for contributing to the board.
While I’m here, I’ll tip my hat to this recent Siam Sam post, which probably went largely unnoticed since it came at the end of thread. But it’s one of the best chuckles I’ve gotten in a long time.
What the hell? Asian newspaper? Sorry it isn’t more “American.” You know, corruption, bullshit politics, gangs, drive-by shootings…
Mundane Pointless Stuff I Must Share…yup, it seems to be the right forum. Siam Sam for the most part, has interesting stuff he shares, if you find the front page too “Asian” post some shit.
Some of you charter members really pis me off. Always bitching about stupid shit. First you complain SD isn’t attracting enough new members, then picky mofos like you start stupid insulting threads to run newer members off.
I disagree with this pitting. Considering that in some forums, topics can stay on the front page for a few days, I’m not going to bitch about someone started a bunch of new threads, most of which get a lot of replies. Plus, he posts about a bunch of different things, but since he has been in Thailand for a while, he is going to post about what he knows.
I’ll chime in on the side of “Leave him alone”. He posts a lot about Thailand. shrug It’s interesting to read his stuff. Just because it’s mostly about a country other than the US doesn’t make it wrong to post. Some folks need to follow the “Don’t open it if you don’t want to read it” rule of thumb.
Why the hell is this a Pit thread instead of a private message? Couldn’t somebody have just suggested that Siam Sam consider doing a digest kind of thing every few days instead of a few threads per day?
Okay, six threads on the front page is a lot, although one of those was started in May. But Siam Sam isn’t scrambledeggs, and when I do read his threads, I find them intersting. He’s posting about places a lot of us haven’t visited and might not know much about.
I agree, I like them very much and find them fascinating.
I admit I am biased coz I’ve spent a lot of time there myself, but I think bringing news and quirky stories from cultures different to those of the majority of the Teeming Millions is a worthwhile thing.
This is a joke, right? I mean, I don’t open all his threads because there’s only so much I need to know about the plight of Tibetan underage male prostitutes, but the ones I do open are invariably entertaining and informative and provide many people with their best opportunities for horrible pun wars.
I’m fucking serious. This is the worst Pitting ever.
I’m with jayjay on this one, though it may be because there are so few Asia-related threads otherwise. Anyway, I think his topics are interesting and his posts educational, and unlike scrambledeggs he sticks around to participate (which may contribute to there being so many on the first page).
While I think more than four or five post per month is like keyboard diarrhea, this guy is not acting like a jerk, clearly not trolling, actually fairly interesting.
Siam Sam, you’re welcome to some of my unused post allocation.
I went off and looked at some of his threads, too. He doesn’t just drop them all over the boards. He puts them in MPSIMS, and he has descriptions in each one, plus his thoughts. He follows all of the forum rules.
If I lived in India, you bet I’d be posting local threads. Come to think of it maybe I should anyway. Not enough India threads on these boards.
