Tell it to SHAKES.
The pigeon thread has served at least to update my mental image of Sam.
(It used to be ho-hum Marlon-Brando-As-Kurtz, but now it’s Muppet Bert in a dirty undershirt. Much better.)
I hate pigeons with an almost irrational passion, though, in my defense, they appear to have it in for me just as irrationally. No other way to explain having been shat on by them in three different occasion in two different nations separated by a vast ocean – and in a two year span. So, war it is you crap-bombing F-18s wannabes!
Having said that, I clicked on the OP’s link and found myself taken if not by the flying rats by Sam’s progress from hater to lover of the former. To me, it wasn’t about the birds as much as it was/is about the man himself (and the surrounding cast of characters). Has a voyeur-like kind of quality to it and, besides, from what I read, most all the comments in it are encouraging and positive – never mind the numerous requests for Sam to keep it updated.
Conclusion: the OP swings and misses wildly!
Thanks for introducing me to that thread. It’s awesome.
Don’t be fooled. Siam Sam is raising them as squab to the slaughter.
His next thread will be “I Made You Love The Pigeons And Now They Are In My Belly!”
I see your point entirely, but I propose that even if most of the posts are his own, that doesn’t mean folks aren’t interested in it. I saw a phenomenon on my own board of this sort of thing, where I was posting a weekly update to a technology thread, and saw that each week maybe 50 people would read it, but no one would post. And one day I posted a thread asking if I should go on, since no one was responding, and the response was overwhelmingly “yes! We just liked reading it but didn’t have anything to add.”
I do admit, however, that it’s difficult to tell if a thread is being read and enjoyed, or just clicked on and not enjoyed, without feedback.
Isn’t it, though? I always thought of pigeons as nasty, disease-carrying rats with wings. But that thread is full of cuteness and stuff I never knew about the birds. Consider some ignorance fought.
I stopped reading the pigeon thread about mid-way through the second brood. Could someone who’s kept up tell me how many broods there have been? How many generations?
Thanks.
Thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks to SHAKES for inadvertently introducing me to a very interesting thread.
This thread is now about how much we love the pigeon thread.
As a member of the Audobon Society I find the thread fascinating as it gives such an up close view of the life cycle of those pigeons. You can, from the several sets of squabs, get a really good idea of how fast they grow, how long it takes to hatch, feeding behavior, sexual activity, and so on. I even passed the thread along to several folks in our local chapter, so it’s possible some of those views were from around my place.
And Sam is doing it from the comfort of his apartment, Beats being Jane Goodall or Diane Fossey, out in the jungle and scratching themselves.
I notice SHAKES hasn’t been around in a while.
If possible, I would like to eat them in front of you while you either:
took pictures, or
looked on in horror.
Either way, a properly prepared squab dish is almost as evil as foie gras. ALMOST.
EDIT: OK, I am being an ass. Everyone knows that squab are pigeons raised for their breasts because they cannot fly due to intentionally broken wings…right?
I just posted another message in Sam’s long running pigeon saga.
I read it all in one sitting and was enthralled.
I thought I hated pigeons as urban flying rats - now I have a different perspective.
Maybe people who raise them as pets see more in them than I ever imagined.
Siam Sam - your narrative is fascinating.
I know I could never have cleaned that balcony as often as you and your wife - you must truely be animal lovers.
May you enjoy your feathered friends long as you are able.
Best regards,

Heh, heh. Boy did I ever pick the wrong thing to bitch about.
I mean, I knew I would get the “If you don’t like it. Don’t read it”( I don’t) posts but damn! I had no idea people had such a passion for pigeons.
Like others in this thread, pigeons to me are basicaly sewer rats with wings. So every time I scroll down MPSIMS and I see “We have pigeon eggs.” to me, it might as well read: “We have sewer rats”. Which is no call for outrage just more of an eyeroll moment.
So go ahead and enjoy the thread guys. I retract my pit. Well, I mean, I STILL want to stomp those pigeon eggs but I’ll just keep my anger bottled up inside for now on.
Just go out and stomp on some pigeon eggs. Just not Sam’s.
I actually don’t endorse that, it was just a joke. I truly <3 pigeons and love to watch them.
Nooooooooooooooooooooo!!!
Perhaps we can distract SHAKES with some eye candy?
Oh dear.
Without looking through my pigeon thread, I seem to recall the OP making a couple of less-than-helpful comments in it about halfway through. My apologies if it’s not him and I’m thinking of someone else.
Truth be told, I do occasionally wonder if I’m being annoying with it, but there are some posters who encourage me to continue it, and I’ve always taken the the viewer count as an indication of interest. And I’ve always figured anyone not interested in it would simply have the good sense to ignote it, but obviously that’s not true.
Don’t worry, I’ll keep it going as long as regular viewers want me to. Although it looks like Big and Little Pidgee have flown the coop. But then, they’ve done that before.
I wouldn’t fret a bit. I’d never noticed it until this thread, but I’m going to read it now. Sounds interesting.
And I just posted new photos of George in it.
