I’ve just finished eating a Dove Bar (ice cream, not soap), and I was thinking back, as I usually do when eating one, to the original Dove Bars. Do you remember them? I very clearly remember the first time I ate one. It was about 30 years ago, and it was huge: at least two or three times larger than the current ones. The chocolate coating was thicker, and the bar was so big that eating it was a real challenge. Finishing a Dove Bar gave you a real sense of accomplishment.
Do you remember the box they came in that unfolded into a tray that you could poke the stick through, so that you wouldn’t drop any of that chocolatey goodness on the floor or your lap?
Then they started shrinking them. I don’t know if this started before or after the original Dove company was bought by Mars, but either customers complained that they were getting too much for their money or, like other businesses, the manufacturer realized they could charge the same while reducing portion size.
The current ones are pretty good, although I think the chocolate was a little better in the old days. And being as I’m trying to lose weight, a 270-calorie Dove Bar is much more practical than a 750-calorie one. But the original Dove Bars weren’t supposed to be practical! They were an exercise in glorious, decadent excess.
Diet or no, I regret that you can’t get the original giant Dove Bars any more.
And that’s the general theme of this thread. I don’t mind talking about Dove Bars some more, but what things have passed from the scene that you you miss or reminisce about?
